Michelle and Hillary Open Thread

I just want to say that both Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton brought down the house with their DNC speeches.  (Clinton speech video and text here; Obama speech video here; text here)  Clinton’s speech last night, especially, really wowed me.  It was worth staying up and watching all of the other bullshit run over.

Go ahead and discuss — civilly, please.

LOST Finale Open Thread

There is going to be some serious LOSTPedia reading to be done tomorrow. Best. Season Finale. Ever.

Race Relations 101 – Let’s start with hair.

(“Race Relations 101” isn’t exactly the title I’m looking for. Suggestions for better things to call this series would be much appreciated.)

The issues surrounding “ethnic” hair in general, and black hair specifically, come up pretty frequently in discussions about people’s experiences of race. It intersects with feminist concerns about beauty culture, hierarchies and colonial issues, and the difficulty of conveying lived experiences, to name a few issues. I’ll start with those, and work out from there.

This is going to be slanted toward the issue of black hair, both because I myself am black (well, black-Japanese, but I definitely have stereotypically black hair), and because much of what I’ve found that has focused on hair has been in that vein. If anyone has come across (or written) anything they would like to have included (particularly on the issue of asian hair, which I find least mentioned), please comment about it or otherwise let me know so that I can add it in.

White hair stories are also welcomed, but I would like to preserve this space for those that truly intersect with the issues laid out. If you have a story that you would like to share, but which does not really hit any of the major issues I lay out, please leave it in my Open Thread. If I get enough stories, I will write up a corresponding post about that over at Feline Formal Shorts.

Happy Friday the 13th Open Thread

Blog Notes: I’ve made some changes as per the blogroll situation. Links directly to commenters’ and trackbackers’ blogs are now featured in the sidebar in addition to leads to this blog’s comments. This should boost reader stats without slowing my loading time. My Bloglines supported blogroll is now on my About page. I’m not sure what Jill will do with hers yet, but it will be noted.

Other Stuff: I’m out planting the garden today and working on a killer sunburn, and it appears Jill is doing graduation stuff and preparing for a trip out of the country. (If you haven’t congratulated her on her graduation, do so now. Immediately!)

So, what are you guys doing?

New Comment Feature

Directly above the text box to enter a comment at this blog, there exist new buttons you can use to help format the appearance of your comment.

To make something bold, italic, or blockquoted (note for the html illiterate: blockquoted as it is set off in gray when I quote someone else’s work), highlight the words or phrases you want to format and click the needed button. The code will appear in the textbox. To check the definition or spelling of a word, highlight the word in question and click “Dict.” It will open a new window of a dictionary site to define the word and spelling for you.

It appears this erodes some of the functionality of the comment preview feature — italics, bold, and links will not appear in the preview any longer, but the blockquote will. If anyone knows how to override this quirk, please let me know.

Open thread to annoy me with the new comment formatting toy.

Pep Talk

Someone remind me why my college education sould remain a top priority. No, really.

Open thread.

Life CD Swap

Who has received their CDs from the swap?

Oddly, shortly after reminding everyone to have theirs out by a certain date, my CD burner crapped out. I do have addressed envelopes ready to go once I figure out how to fix it.

Open thread – let’s hear about your CDs. Any suggestions for a future swap?
