  1. I can’t quite decide if I like it and it’s funny or if it’s falling flat for me.

  2. you know I am mystified as to what the patriarch was preaching, but I do know I was chuckling hard:) I particularly liked the patriarch assuring me that it was okay to watch interracial porn:) Whew.

  3. I liked “there is no such thing as a choice between bad and worse. You know your grandma’s jesus plate? does it matter if it is defaced by a black face, or lipstick? Didn’t think so.”

  4. I really like the concept of this series, but he’s just not quite over the top enough for me. I mean, he’s doing a good job of being a white middle-class dude, but there is something a little flat about it. Maybe I’m just not white, male, straight, or normal enough to really be spoken to by it.

    Holly,

I think you nailed it. He was being a bit too polite and holding too much back. It probably would work much better if he was more forceful, loud, and angry.

    Some suggestions:

    1. Background decorated with flags, red meat, guns, ammunition, videogaming consoles, large widescreen TVs blasting sports and action movies. Computer/electronic gadgets are optional…as some Patriarchy members may find that a bit too off-putting for its “Nerdiness”.

    2. More hammer against metal/explosions type SFX tossed in every so often.

    3. He needs to change his undistinctive wardrobe…..replace that sloppy dress shirt for blue/black business suit, sportswear, or pseudo-military fatigues with helmet/beret. Pluses for accessories like military medals, wads of cash, sunglasses, black/metallic briefcases, and/or weaponry ranging from wooden clubs to mini-ICBMs.

    4. At least one bookburning…..especially of literary works and high school/college lit course syllabi deemed “too feminine”for Patriarchal consumption. Pluses if there are massive fiery explosions all members could enjoy in their patriarchal contemplation.

  6. You know I watched it again and now I’m like “wait… maybe it’s MORE scary that the Patriarchy incarnates his avatar in the form of a happy-go-lucky Nice Guy!!!” I mean, everyone knows that the patriarchy is supposed to be all about red meat and guns and sports and suits and whatnot. But that stuff is also camouflage for the MOST insidious everyday stuff, after all, and the funny thing is that a lot of dudes are really not that good at the most celebrated conventions of dude-dom. Like an ill-fitting suit that is a couple sizes too big.

Oh no, over-analysis of humor! Funniness draining…

If done to extremes…over-analysis of humor can be a new source of laughs…:)

Maybe its just my formative experiences…..but I can’t see the “Nice Guy” as the main spokesman for the patriarchy. “Nice Guys”, especially in my childhood neighborhood or even in the workplace were nearly at the very bottom of the hierarchy and viciously picked on by many more stereotypically “masculine” dudes.

It may be more effective if it is as close to the stereotypical ideal of “masculinity”, yet friendly and non-threatening such as a stereotypically suave well-off gentleman in a fancy business suit, preppy wear, etc. A sort of “confident carefree masculinity” would be most effective imo.
