Quote of the Day

From Laura MacDonald:

And for our part, let’s stop being so surprised when we discover that our public figures have their own complex sex lives, and start being more suspicious when they self-righteously denounce the sex lives of others.

  1. again the issue is not that this man by all accounts is a hypocritical pig, the problem is why are we funding police to torture men who have sex with men, what purpose does it serve?

  2. I don’t want adultery to be illegal, but call me a prude, I still think it’s wrong. Certainly if my husband cheated on me I wouldn’t just say “Well, we all have complex sex lives.”

  3. Good article. The problem I had with Craig is not his homosexuality, but his hypocrisy, but really, he’s one of those contribution to his own problem. If some people weren’t so set on making homosexuality and other sexual goings-on a bad thing, there wouldn’t be laws against it. The reason people like Craig have to troll men’s rooms to get sex is because people like Craig are the ones who pass laws against it. It’s a vicious circle, and it needs to stop. All consentual sex acts between consenting adults should be legal.

  4. I was also struck by this when I read it (the NYT op-ed about tearoom trade etc yes?) I feel for the guy, why can’t someone be against certain legal protections for behavior that they themselves engage in, especially if they have deeply conflicted feelings about that behavior? Sure, maybe it’s preferable to be open and comfortble and conistent about your sexual choices, and not so hard if you went to wesleyan and decided to be a lesbian. But for a guy from rural idaho who grew up in the 40s or 50s, maybe it’s not so easy navigating these currents. and the glee with which the left blogs indulged in was just as distasteful, to me, as the quickness of his R- colleagues to dump the man, for a misdemeanor charge after all.

  5. Since the Craig outing, hits for my Lindsey Graham post have gone through the roof. Obviously, lots of people know. He needs to give it up.

And you know, it’s too bad. Everyone likes him personally–he is a charming individual. This is purely political and all about the anti-gay positions he has held.

I honestly can’t understand how someone can have zealously homophobic public politics and be gay–? Is it pure opportunism or some kind of psychological defense mechanism? Both?

  6. He might not be gay. I’m not sure why people forget about bisexuality? Because men can’t be bisexual? Hogwash. It almost seems like because he’s married to a woman and caught cruising men’s rooms…he a scandalous closeted gay man. Why not a scandalous closeted bisexual?

The reason people like Craig have to troll men’s rooms to get sex is because people like Craig are the ones who pass laws against it.
Some people just like the thrill of cruising and doing something somewhere they, by the mores of polite society, aren’t supposed to be doing.
