  1. I’m Appalachian. I wonder, if I were to possess the same accent as the rest of my family, would I be allowed to teach ESL in Arizona? I teach it in Texas.

  2. As a POC, I mostly like his article, although the dude slapping your wife bit was pretty sexist. That said, I’m a little troubled when non-POC individuals endorse (or dismiss) missives for POC by POC which this largely strikes me as. You see this all the time when non-POC say that mainstream black artists “should” be endorsing their more anonymous talented brethren, or often in the more condescending form of rich black folk should be doing more to help their poor and oppressed brethren. Whatever the truth of these assertions, I don’t think they’re your place to make.

  3. I can’t even think about the Arizona Department of Education right now without flying into a homicidal rage. They’re not even trying to pretend it’s not hideously, horrifyingly racist, you know?

I’m also betting that a white dude with a posh BBC-esque accent will be magically more understandable than a not-white dude with a posh BBC-esque accent will be more understandable than a not-white dude with a New York accent.

  4. I once heard a story back at my undergrad about a student who wanted to take Astronomy 103* and asked a department secretary which professor didn’t have an accent. She looked at the student and said ‘we don’t have anyone like that teaching — pick British, East Coast or Chinese’.

To be honest, a lot of the heavy accents I’ve had trouble parsing are just as likely to be white/English-speakers, like the above-mentioned British professor (awesome professor, but his stutter interacts badly with his accent), or my uncle. Bet you if either taught English, they wouldn’t get raked over the coals.

    * A survey course designed for non-majors to get their science creds.

  5. Can we give Arizona back to Mexico already? I thought Missisippi was bad..
I thought of a good law for Oklahoma: all legislators must now submit to rectal thermometers until the new law is repealed. It’d serve them right.

  6. Uh, you do realize that there are lots of native peoples in Arizona right? Let’s just “give” it back to Mexico….. because Mexico is obviously the nation most entitled to the land.

  7. Everybody has an accent.

Arizona seems to have a law that allows their policymakers to not use their brains. I’m disgusted.

  8. Flowers already covered the first part of your comment, Politicalguineapig, but making a joke about violating people’s bodies? on a feminist blog? on a link about rape and abortion??
