Friday Random Ten And Wet Kitties

I was so busy with the garden that I forgot about the FRT and Friday Cat Blogging! Bad Lauren!

Pablo got a bath this morning. Doug looks on afterward either feeling sympathetic for Pablo or mocking him. I vote for the latter.

Pablo always seems to feel better after his baths. The initial distress causes him to groom and groom until he is dry, but in the meantime I spend extra time brushing and petting him to help comb out any snarls and organize his fur. He relishes in the attention and is at his most affectionate during the few days after his baths. Such a sweet kitty.

I’m still pissed at Doug for the turd incident, so we’re not talking about him.

Friday Random Ten (15) – The “Going to Graceland” Edition

This is getting posted mighty early as I will have no contact with a computer from tomorrow until Monday. Promise me not to overwhelm me with email, ‘kay?

FRTWill Winamp will be kinder this week than last week? Find out as we rate our Friday Random Ten with accompanying commentary.

If you don’t know what to do by now,
I revoke your FRT card.

1) Wilco – At Least That’s What You Said
Good song, nice and chill. 8/10

2) Arsonists – We Be About
Decent hip-hop. Nice beat with backing piano. 7/10

3) Ween – Spinal Meningitis
What a guitly pleasure. Chorus: “Smile on mighty Jesus / Spinal Meningitis got me down.” Indeed. 7/10

4) L7 – One More Thing
Mmm. I still love this band. Despite general agreement, I give this one a 8/10.

5) Dios Malos (formerly known as Dios) – Asshole
I don’t know how I feel about this song. The chorus says, “She’ll do anything to make you feel like an asshole.” I’ve known a few people like this, but if you’ve ever dated an arrogant band member, chances are Arrogant Band Member is the asshole. 5/10

6) Trans Am – Television Eyes
I’ve tried to like this group and this song, but I don’t. 4/10

7) Sufjan Stevens – Wolverine
Definitely not my favorite of his songs, but still deserves a healthy 7/10.

8) Lata Mangeshkar – Aa Aa Bhi Jaa
Another good song from a Bollywood movie, and nothing beats Ms. Lata’s voice. I still like the song from “Eternal Sunshine” better. 6/10

9) Pixies – This Monkey’s Gone To Heaven
Does it get better than this? And by “this” I mean, does rock music get better than the Pixies? Not really. 10/10

10) Public Enemy – 911 Is a Joke
Considering that this is an awesome song AND it came up in conversation last night after a long discussion over the legend of Stag O Lee (aka Stagger Lee) and the Godfather of Gangsta, Public Enemy totally deserves a 10/10.

11) Bruce Springsteen & Elvis Costello – London Calling (Grammy tribute to Joe Strummer)
Horrible recording, but I love hearing Costello sing the Clash. 8/10

12) Nirvana – Where Did You Sleep Last Night?
From their famous Unplugged album. I used to adore this song, but after listening to it in a constant revolving stream at the diner that shaped my angsty teenage years, I like to skip this one. 4/10

13) Blackalicious – Do This My Way
Love, love, love Blackalicious. This whole album is funky and soulful and perfect for a long drive out of town, which is partially why I always include it on car trips. 8/10

14) PJ Harvey – Working For The Man
I used to hate this song but I don’t hate it so much any more. It’s one of her slower songs on one of the middle albums. My nephew used to sing “Big fish little fish swimming in the water / come back here and give me my dollar,” not “daughter” as the last word in the chorus is supposed to be, so 7/10 for having a good memory attached to this particular Harvey album. “Dry” is still her best album though.

15) Peaches – Operate
Ooh! Strong finish! Winamp does love me! This is one of my favorite artists and songs that I discovered this year. If you like gender-subversive rock, electornic, and dance music with hip hop influences, buy the newest Peaches album. 9/10

Today’s total FRT/15 Coolness Quotient is a healthy 72%. Excellent.

Graceland, O Graceland, in all of your banal, tacky glory, here I come commas and all.

Friday Random Ten – The Not Going On Vacation Edition

My whole family including Ethan is headed for the annual family vacation to a lake house in Michigan for a full week of summer fun. Me? I’m in class taking a test. Number of times I’ve been able to enjoy the summer week at the lake house? Zero. Summer classes, baby, and there is a lot of work waiting for me this weekend.

The good news is that I’ll be on vacation next weekend. In Arkansas! Yeah! My only hope is that my Friday Random Ten will bring me good luck and favor with St. Lauren, patron saint of the Left Behind.

Joy.

Music and Kitties: Your Friday Goodness

It appears that having cats may permanently change your personality and improve your social life. I could have told you that.

None of this information takes into account that if you try long and hard enough you will eventually get a picture of your cat angrily guarding your sock drawer.

Yawn

Or killing a LEGO tire.

See more feline deliciousness, including Doug wrecking more of Ethan’s LEGO buildings, at my Flickr account.

And now time for the Friday Random Ten/Fifteen: Load up your mp3s, set to random, list the first ten/fifteen that play. If you’re extra cool, you will rate them on the Scale of Coolness (1 being wack and 10 being bitchin’). Highest average score gets a bad white kitty with orange spots shipped at your own expense.

Friday Random Ten – The Coolness Self-Audit Edition, Delayed

The King Of Listmaking has given us a new assignment for the Friday Random Ten, and I quite like it.

In light of the Music Queen’s inability to fulfill her regal duties this week, it’s time to take the random music thing in a new direction. As opposed to most of the other times I post the random songs off my Windows Media Player (9 GB, 5500 choices), this list is actually random… I’m not skipping over the odd ditty Hall & Oates or Primus-after-everyone-in-the-world-had-the-sense-to-stop-
listening-to-them. As true, inner coolness can only be measured this way, it’s time to take stock. Deep breath.

Friday Random Ten

I’ve never done this before, but I figure, as long as I’m here, might as well jump on the cool weekly things that Lauren does… so here goes. But let me give a little disclaimer: I am not cool. Seriously. Right now, my two favorite songs are “Lonely” by Akon and the new Mariah Carey ballad. I don’t listen to cool bands that you’ve never heard of. In fact, I probably listen to the exact same music as your dad, if, in addition to dad music like Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, your dad also listens to a lot of Ani Difranco and really mainstream hip-hop. So please, don’t think less of me when my ten random songs are totally lame… I like them, but as stated, I am totally uncool.

1. Missy Elliot – I’m Really Hot
2. Jay-Z and Pharell – Frontin’
3. Ben Harper – In Your Eyes (live acoustic)
4. Ani Difranco and Bob Dylan – Most of the Time
5. Mindy Smith – One Moment More
6. Tom Petty – You Got Lucky
7. John Legend – Ordinary People
8. Rolling Stones – The Last Time
9. Tori Amos – Precious Things
10. Ray LaMontagne – Jolene

So this serves as pretty clear evidence that I need to update my music collection. Dang.

FRT and Cat Blogging

I could absolutely kill Doug. He’s a sweet little kitty whenever I’m around, but as soon as I go to sleep or leave the house, even for five minutes, something gets torn to shreds.

Today’s victim was a $7 ball of nice cotton yarn that I was to sell in a group of yarn on eBay. I came home from class to find it trailing from the kitchen counter into the deep, dark depths of the basement, covered in hair and grime.

The kitty is nowhere to be found. Lucky for him. There are no pictures this week, or you’d see a lovely shot of me throttling a kitten. That would be bad for my image, no?

Friday Random Ten – The “Cat May Be Satan Spawn” Edition

  1. Of Montreal – The Party’s Crashing Us
  2. Martha Wainwright – It’s Over
  3. Donovan – Get Thy Bearings
(This one has been on the list several times lately)
  4. The Icicles – You’re Just About My Everything
  5. Iron and Wine – Woman King
  6. Firewater – Mr. Cardiac
  7. Edwyn Collins – A Girl Like You
  8. Devo – Mongoloid
  9. Aimee Mann – It’s Not
  10. The Church – Under the Milky Way

Due to some rather personal events that occurred this week, I’ll be taking some time away from the blog. Look out for Jill and pass her some heady comments.

Friday Random Ten – The Modem Got Shocked in the Thunderstorm Edition

Man, Jill is kicking some ass, isn’t she? Good thing, too. My modem got fried during this last bout of thunderstorms. I’m working off of the laptop, and let me tell you, it sucks.

You know the deal: If it’s Friday somewhere, it’s time for the Friday Random Ten. Upload your mp3s, set to random, list the first ten that play.

1) The Runaways – Cherry Bomb
2) Lady Saw – I Got Your Man
3) AC/DC – Thunderstruck
4) Cat Power – Werewolf
5) Barbara Pittman – Handsome Man
6) Reverend Horton Heat – Folsom Prison Blues
7) Donovan – Wear Your Love Like Heaven
8) Erykah Badu – Green Eyes
9) Wilco – Hell Is Chrome
10) Jeff Buckley – Grace

I think the highlight of the day was finding my copies of the Richmond Sluts and The Problematics in my laptop bag. Got to find a silver lining somewhere with all of this failed modem stuff.
