In defense of the sanctimonious women's studies set || First feminist blog on the internet

Hey, ladies!

Is there an obnoxious come-on equivalent to, “Gee, I guess you can´t handle dissent on your little blog, can you, babe?” Would this be analagous to, “You just don´t like men, huh? Is that it?” Or is it more like, “What are you, a lesbian?”

It makes sense that I found this on Feministing.

I love Feministing for a lot of reasons. Firstly, they’re a one-stop-shop for feminist news and brief commentary — they’re more of a feminist news blog than anything else I’ve found. I read them every day for a quick heads-up on what’s going on. Secondly, Jessica has more karma-points than perhaps anyone else I’ve ever know. She’s hooked me up with so many opportunities, I don’t even know where to start counting. And she’s done it for many, many feminist bloggers. That woman spreads the love like no one else, and I am eternally grateful to her for that. Thirdly, Feministing covers pop culture, and they cover it well. So I was quite excited to see this bell hooks piece, on pop culture, posted there:

Right on the money.

Wipe Away the Sin

satanwipes.gif

Am I the only one who snickered about which body parts good Christian girls and boys will wipe clean first?

via a religious blog that calls Satan Wipes “Products that I wished existed — Oh wait, they do. It’s called holy water.”

Because I promised…

Way back when I was tagged to be a guest-blogger here, I said that I would write some race-relations 101 posts.

I have some ideas (and I’m hoping to flesh out at least one of them today), but I’d like to know what there’s an interest in too. I know there isn’t a race equivalent of tigtog’s brilliant Finally, A Feminism 101 Blog, and this series is probably not going to get anywhere near that involved… but I’d like to see what we come up with nonetheless.

Are there any questions you’re just burning to have answered? They don’t actually have to be 101, they just have to be questions.

(Of course, I’m not claiming to speak for all Brown people when I write this. But I’m wicked good with a Google search, and I like research better than I like my job.)

An Open Letter to Anonymous.

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you for your organized campaign to silence us. That you would choose to devote so many hours and resources to your illegal and ill-fated efforts toward our demise is the highest compliment you could pay us. It tells us that you think our movement is powerful, and that we are a significant threat to your way of life.

You are correct.

It’s possible you will even succeed in silencing me for a while, or temporarily shutting down this blog or others. But if you do, twenty more will take our place. Every move you make, every little email, amplifies our voices and strengthens our movement.

That’s why I just had to take a minute to say thanks. You are a gift to feminism.

8/12 UPDATE: I’ve closed the comments on this thread. No one seems to have anything new to say to each other, and I’m honestly not interested in giving Anon any more airtime or attention. Thanks for all the thoughtful discussion, both challenging and supportive.

Stupid Everything…

Okay, so either my router or my modem has taken a serious powder. Luckily I wasn’t supposed to do anything important this week, like guest blog at Feministe or anything, so it shouldn’t be a huge deal.

Haha.

I’m writing this post on my Sidekick, which is tedious (where’s my scorn for iPhones now!) and difficult on the thumbs. I’d had another post planned for today, but I’m going to try to get my real computer working first. If I can’t, I’ll get used to the thumb workout.

Test Post

Hi all. Lauren here trying to administer the website. We are trying to move the site to a dedicated server, especially now that our host (with whom we’ve been customers for, oh five years?) decides to shut us down. But the good news: We’re now running the latest version of WordPress.

Please be patient while I run a few tests on the blog to see if we’re really in business.

UPDATE: It seems quicker. Is it quicker?

Feministes At Work

Just an FYI: We’re still doing some work on the site, which means that there will be outages. We’ll try and make everything as unobtrusive as possible, but the blog will be down tonight after 11pm Pacific time, and possibly tomorrow night as well (we’ll make sure we have it up and running during the day). Thanks for everyone’s ongoing patience! I promise it’ll be worth it. And thanks to the wonderful guardian angel who is doing all kinds of work to make sure that we have a stable and secure space.
