The Good, The Bad, and the Weirdly Interesting

A Monday morning link round-up.

The Good:

Christiane Amanpour, one of my personal heroes and favorite reporters, finally has her own show.

Saudi Arabia’s first “all-girl” rock band is making (underground) waves (not really sure why the group is “all-girl” when the “girls” are in college, but I’ll let it go this time).

The Bad:

A woman was murdered and two others wounded in a New Jersey church, when the woman’s estranged husband showed up and gunned them down. She had a restraining order against him and had moved from California to New Jersey to escape his abuse.

A 14-year-old boy was killed by his mother’s live-in boyfriend, who she was in the process of getting a restraining order against.

“Human rights activist” claims that it’s ok to harass women — as long as they’re Israeli. Yeah, no.

Teh Gays are coming! TO YOUR TOWN!

The Weirdly Interesting:

Pink and Blue: Photos of kids who will only play with gender-specific toys.

The nine most disturbingly misogynist ads of all time. I think the first is my favorite, for sheer oh-my-god-that-is-horrific factor. via Jezebel.

I cannot help loving this video. Damn you, Beyonce, for making such fun anti-feminist feminist songs! Damn you for your glorious, glorious music videos, whether you’re imitating Jay-Z and playing with baby alligators or partaking in an ass-slapping Fossean nightmare. And damn you Justin Timberlake for wearing a leotard and high heels almost as well as B. Enjoy:

  1. Those ads are so disturbing, and some of the comments at Blog of Hilarity are equally jaw-dropping (the commentary by the author is pretty assy too, of course, but that seems to be par for the course when analyzing old ads these days). “While many women are complete whores…”? Oh, thanks for acknowledging that not all women are “complete whores,” just “many” of them! And of course everyone thinks they’re being “ironic,” not misogynistic. ‘Cause there’s no such thing as misogyny anymore.

  2. Yeah, I’d be really pissed off, but since I weigh more than 140 pounds he doesn’t care what I think (his words), so what’s the point right?

  3. Yeah, I agree with the above as well. I did find the commentary by the blogger amusing but I read it ironically like the vaginas containing bear traps. But then that other article really horrified me. How can they recognize the absurdity in misogynistic ads and then make fun of a woman for not being attractive enough to give some one a blowjob and being too fat to live (essentially) on the same damn website?

  4. the thing that really strikes me in the video is that the ladies are wearing tall stiletto heels, and the boys are wearing these tiny little kitten heels. discuss.

  5. Ugh, let’s also not forget to mention Chris’s horribly racist commentary about the vitamin ad about cleaning: “It’s always fairly arousing to see a woman doing cleaning activities. Particularly when the words “Dirty Latina” are involved, but I guess there’s some flexibility in this case.”

Vomit. I normally love pieces that comment on sexist ads, but Chris makes me want to barf.

  6. Yeah, I was just about to say that I thought the “bear trap” comment was pretty funny, but most of the rest were really sexist (and racist, as Snarky Amber pointed out), and then of course people who complained were accused of not understanding irony and/or having no sense of humor.

  7. and then of course people who complained were accused of not understanding irony and/or having no sense of humor.

    Which is just so original.

  8. I am trying to figure out Pallipurath had a loaded gun *and* an active restraining order against him. I hope they catch the bastard.

  9. Rebecca, if you follow the link she said much worse in abstract and about a specific girl who had been assaulted.

    Absolutely unbelievable.

  10. cedarcrow, my guess is that the guys aren’t as practiced at even standing still in heels, let alone dancing in them. While watching them fall over would be amusing in a Funniest Home Videos way, staying on their feet and dancing is better. There’s also the logistical difficulty of getting stillettos in larger sizes, since on average male feet are longer and wider than female feet.

  11. That video validates something I’ve thought about Beyonce for a long time, which is that if you imagine all her music as sung by a drag queen, it’s about ten times as awesome.

    That’s so true.
