Adrian Hamilton of the UK’s Independent argues that the UN is widely and correctly regarded as, “an instrument of western oppression and US hegemony – a club of the big boys intent on bullying smaller countries in the interests of Washington and its European allies.” And I argue that’s pretty much a load of BS.
Off topic, but I saw on the BBC website just now that the Saudi rape victim got pardoned by the King. Maybe we could put the story up so everyone knows this woman isn’t going to be lashed after all. I was inspired by Danielle Crittenden’s “Islamic Like Me” article to go find and blog an old account of a few days in the time right after 9/11 when I wore a headscarf as part of what was then a sort of semi-organized expression of solidarity with Muslims who might be under attack in this country. (I’m not sure, in hindsight, that this was particularly the best way of expressing that solidarity; I blogged it mainly because my experience of the whole thing wound up being pretty different from Crittenden’s, FWIW.)
