Evangelicals are threatening to run a third-party candidate if Giuliani is the Republican nominee. Which puts me in a really tough place — I can’t stand Giuliani and I think he’s a dangerous and scary man, but boy would I like to see this.

Conservative Christians are downright terrified at the idea of a lady-president in the White House. Clinton is one of the most conservative Democrats running, and yet her name — and the vagina-ness that it exudes — apparently scare the shit out of Hellfire-and-brimstone crowd.

“I can’t think of a bigger disaster for social conservatives, defense conservatives, and economic conservatives than Hillary Clinton in the White House,” Mr. Bauer said.

Still, he added, “But I do believe there are certain core issues for the Republican Party—low taxes, strong defense and pro life— and if we nominate some who is hostile on one of those three thing it will blow up the GOP.”

…so you’re telling me that this is awesome either way?

To paraphrase our Dear Leader (and Kirstin Dunst), Bring it on.

  1. This sounds like the BEST IDEA EVER. Is this when we start making fake evangelical blogs to promote how good the idea would be to the base? Or start writing letters to Pat Robertson under pseudonyms begging him to run?

    Do you really think that they’d be this stupid? I mean, I HOPE so. But I have my doubts. It will be very very interesting.

    And I have to say that Romney scares the shit out of me just as much as Giuliani does, although for different reasons. I don’t think that McCain has got a chance in hell anymore and Fred Thompson has yet to prove himself as the golden boy that everyone wants him to be. So I’m not really sure how much we have left to lose.

    and you know, if Hilary wins, part of it may very well be her high profile and ability to withstand their constant attacks that put her there. She’s already been through several epic shitstorms from the right….and people are bored with the Hilary=evil! meme now. So they’re scrambling.

  4. This would probably be the best thing that could possibly happen to the Democratic party. Even if the evangelical party candidate gets only one or two percent of the vote, it’ll be enough to push the Dems over (if they weren’t there already). Its exactly the same model as the Green party/Dems – you split the hardcores off, and they “steal” votes from the major party.

    So maybe we should all change our voter affliation to Republican, just for the primaries so we can all vote for guiliani?

  6. Yes! Yes! I hope they do it. I relish the idea of the Republicans having a spoiler like 2000.

    Also, you know the Hillary-hate is dying down significantly when my mom, a very recent Democratic convert who was the biggest Clinton-hater around in the 90s, stated the other day that she was voting for Hillary if she was the Dem candidate.

    Me: “But, Mom, why?”

    Mom: “Well, sweetie, she’s already been in the White House, and she didn’t do anything or say anything that I disagreed with a whole lot. At least with her, you know what you’re getting for the most part.”

    Would that everyone felt the same if Hillary is nominated…

  10. I don’t really think that Christians are scared of Hillary because she’s a woman, Jill. She’s the most extreme pro-abortion, as you well know, which is the Christian’s number-one issue. She’s “pro-civil unions”, which means she’s pro-gay marriage but she is trying to keep up her conservative-democrat make-up (which apparently you have fallen for) and her healthcare plan doesn’t sit well.

    So say whatever you will about Hillary Clinton being the “most conservative democrat”, but don’t associate our dislike for her to her being a woman. I’d take a conservative woman over a liberal male any day.
