Friday Random Ten

The “Every now and then…” edition.

Not really. I just secretly love this song. But let’s be honest: Dudes in speedos and goggles getting dowsed with water? Ninjas dancing? Men in suits breaking their glasses in a toast? Church boys / prep school students with weird glowing eyes to illustrate the line “bright eyes”? Does it get any better than this? No, no it does not.

1. Tom Waits – That Feel
2. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – New Morning
3. Spoon- The Delicate Place
5. Franz Ferdinand – Michael
6. Nina Simone – Ooh Child
7. The Notwist – One With the Freaks
8. Rhett Miller – Our Love
9. Erykah Badu ft. Common – Love of My Life
10. John Coltrane – My Little Brown Book

And because I’m a sucker for pretty much anyone named Paolo:

  1. Ah Michael…..that’s one of the hottest songs ever. Would that I could see Franz’s Alex making out with a hot boy.

  2. That’s one of the most mind-blowing videos ever. And that applies to both the original and Hurra Torpedo (which gets bonus points for WTFitude).

  3. Why do you need to “secretly” love this song, Jill? It’s great. Don’t be ashamed.

  4. I never saw the video for that song until just now. During nearly all of the eighties I was trapped in a repressive relationship that included little interaction with pop culture, save for sneaking private radio time.

At its height of popularity of that song “Turn Around” (is that its title?) I was finally reaching the understanding that I could not save a bad marriage or change anyone but myself. The destruction of hopes and dreams and the realization that I had to take responsibility for my own life coincided with my trying to become an adult, having married much too young.

How amazing that this song, which seemed to capture my feelings so long ago in words and arrangement, only further illustrates them visually. Wow.
