BSG Discussion Thread — 3.15 “A Day in the Life”

Hm.

The season started out with such promise.

  1. I thought Adama’s conversations with his dead wife were at least more interesting than when Baltar has his delusions.

Otherwise it was a little melodramatic…

  2. I thought this was waaay better than “The Woman King”

I had to rewind it in the beginning in order to see if the woman in Adama’s bed was Roslin or not. While it would be a bad idea for them to really get together at this stage, I really liked the reminiscing about “when we got stoned and cuddled on New Caprica”

Also, little to no love quandrangle.

  3. Yeah, I really rather enjoyed this one. Going back to other stuff I have said in this space, Almos has been wasted a lot of the time playing the Master and Commander cliche bits. It is great to see him get a whole episode to do character work.

I don’t think we are going to see too much expensive work till the end of the season anyway. They had to have blown the budget with Exodus and Eye.

  4. Season 1 Leoben: “Adama is a Cylon.”

Season 3 Six: “Cylon psychology is based on projection.”

And that’s pretty much all that I have to say about a totally boring and crappy episode.

  5. So Lee has his grandfather’s law books. Which means he will likely be a part of Baltar’s trial. I wonder if he will be appointed Baltar’s defense counsel.

And with the previews for next week, all I can say is, WTF, Chief?

  6. I second Chicklet’s

    WTF, Chief?

I’m all in favor of unions and believe that strikes are sometimes necessary, but one by military personnel on a military vessel during a time of war? I realize that the characters are imperfect like the rest of us, but I really hate it when heretofore reasonably intelligent characters act like idiots. Even if the Chief has an excellent reason to call a strike, he has to know that there is no way in hell that Adama could allow it to be successful.

Also, I have to say that I wasn’t thrilled by the decision to have Adama’s ex-wife be mentally ill, be it bipolar or simply alcoholism. It added nothing to the story or any of the characters’ background/motivations. It seemed like a cop-out to me. Instead of having a marriage fail because the husband had a military career that he put first and caused the family to move around frequently (Gee, what are the odds on that happening?), we have “Aw hell, I married a crazy bitch and couldn’t handle it, so I took off.” On top of that, he gets sympathy points because he still loves her even though she abused their children.

  7. Even if the Chief has an excellent reason to call a strike, he has to know that there is no way in hell that Adama could allow it to be successful.

And after Adama had Lee, Sharon and Starbuck risking their necks to save Chief and Callie when the airlock blew, no less.

  8. What’s with the confusion over which set of laws to try Baltar under? Have there been no legal proceedings since the original Cylon invasion?

This show just gets worse and worse.

  9. This show is going down hill for me and since I believe Moore had a five year plan for it (like Babylon 5) I don’t understand all these filler episodes.

I didn’t agree with making the wife mentally ill either, it seemed cruel at this point and out of nowhere. Tigh’s wife was a adulterous/abusive personality, Starbuck is horrible to Sam and now this. Why are there so few *good* women for these men? Not that I’m saying the men are better but sheesh. And seeing as in the miniseries Lee informed his father that his mother was getting remarried and was doing “good” I don’t understand why they saw the need to make her such a bad character. To me it would have been better had she been a good character and Adama screwed up the relationship and is now dealing with the fact that not only it is his anniversary (and he was divorced) but his wife is probably dead and she’ll never know how he loved her.

I think we really do have to wait for the last few episodes of this season for this to pick up. They might be saving the budget money for something awesome, like the rescue on New Caprica from the beginning of this season. What they seem to be doing is having a lot of bottle episodes right now, and they usually do that to save the dough. Then again it could also be to save the dough to show Sci-Fi channel that they can be cheap, because originally they were a really expensive show.

  10. And seeing as in the miniseries Lee informed his father that his mother was getting remarried and was doing “good” I don’t understand why they saw the need to make her such a bad character.

I think the point there was that Adama had rationalized leaving his family by telling himself it was better for the boys. “I can’t give them a good, stable home, but their mother can if I leave them.” Then he finds out (when it’s too late for about twelve different reasons) that no, mom was wacky, that he should have been able to figure that out from available evidence, and that he failed his kids by leaving.

To think I used to talk about BSG being grim as if that were a good thing…
