What happened to Jennifer Moore, a young New Jersey woman who drove into Manhattan with a girlfriend two days ago for some partying and wound up dead in a trash bin, is tragic. She and her friend became separated at some point after they discovered the friend’s car had been impounded, and Jennifer was abducted, raped and murdered.
You’d think that storyline alone would be enough to make her a sympathetic victim of the sort that the New York tabs love. But, apparently, though she was young, white and pretty, she wasn’t white enough for the Post.
The Post and the Daily News will often run the same cover, particularly in a case like this, where the victim’s photo is usually a high-school yearbook photo. Both papers today had the same headshot, and both headlines referenced the frantic call she had placed to her boyfriend as the man who would abduct, kill and rape her was stalking her on 12th Avenue.
But as I scanned the papers as I stood waiting for Pepe to make my bagel this morning, I noticed that the two covers looked a little different. It was the difference in skin tone (really lighting) that caught my eye, but on closer inspection, it turned out that that wasn’t the only difference between the two.
The Daily News cover:
The Post cover (sorry about the animation):
It’s hard to tell because the Daily News cover is so small, but the Post did more than just adjust the lighting — they gave her light blue eyes. You can actually see the original photo on the Post’s web site with the story — I can’t really tell what color her eyes are, but they’re dark.
The man accused of killing her is a light-skinned black man. You have to wonder if the Post’s editors decided to give Jennifer, who died horribly, an Aryan makeover in order to maximize the difference between her light olive complexion and his light black one. To really sell that racial paranoia the Rupert Murdoch-owned Post loves so much.
