Young women: Less voting, more Tinder. It’s for the best.

Fox News’s “The Five” wants young women to know that you’re really too stupid right now to participate in public life. Not too stupid in general — someday, you’ll be old enough and conservative enough to vote or serve on juries. Just not right now. The Five discuss the age and gender gap as it could influence the midterm elections and then veers off to let young women know that right now, while you’re healthy and hot, you should just focus on Tinder and Match.com and let the grownups make the decisions.

GREG GUTFELD. Well, to Bob’s point, he is right that married women tend to be more conservative. But that also correlates with age. And with age comes wisdom. And it’s a known fact that the older that you get, the more conservative you get, and I always tell young people, “You don’t have to wait to become a conservative –”

KIMBERLY GUILFOYLE. To get a brain.

GUTFELD. “Don’t waste your time.” But the point is, a lot of women have also caught on to the big joke, which, it seems to be even more sexist to assume that women cannot take care of themselves because they’re women and therefore need the government to take care of them.

GUILFOYLE. Right! That’s the thing! But when you’re young like that, you think — The same reason why young women on juries are not a good idea, they don’t get it, they’re not in that same, like, life experience of paying the bills, doing the mortgage, kids, community, crime, education, health care. They’re, like, healthy and hot and running around without a care in the world.

BOB BECKEL. They’ve got every right in the world — They have every — They shouldn’t be on jur — They have every right in the world — They’re —

DANA PERINO. It’s the same when you’re choosing a jury.

GUILFOYLE. I didn’t say they shouldn’t be. I just think they can excuse them so they can go back on Tinder or Match.com.

Women! Know your limits!

  1. I have seen my own daughter daughter change from a liberal to a conservative as she got older. She’s 46 now and works as a school nurse where she deals with many immigrants. She comes off almost xenophobic when she talks about immigrant children and “arrogant attitude” I don’t know what goes on but, she has definitely changed her outlook on things in general as she has gotten older and also got a job as a school nurse. She sent me a text the other day telling me the kids were off as the teachers had an in service day. She was happy she did not have to deal with “booger faces”. Here she was referring to kids in general.

    So at least in some cases it appears women become more conservative as they age. And I do recall reading a Pew Poll where most married women voted GOP and single voted with the Dems.

    1. We are all products of our time and upbringing. This doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll become conservatives at an old age, it does mean eventually we’ll have certain world-views that are outdated and slightly offensive.
      In fact, I’m counting on becoming old and yelling at my grand-daughter that…

      Why in MY time, good honest girls would turn them off and put them in the SOCKDRAWER where they BELONG!”

  2. I have not become more conservative as I age. Or as a parent. About anything, really. To the contrary, on certain issues.

  3. I’m neither female nor young (and I didn’t used to be single), but I’ve definitely gotten more radical with age. But it’s not due to my brain cells getting wrinklier. It’s due to all the awful things I keep witnessing.

    It’s like, oh, you lift up one corner of the rug and find ants. Then the couch wears a hole in it and you find roaches and beetles. Then you repace a patch because of water stains and you find raw sewage leaking. It’s not just how awful the stuff you see is. It’s seeing the trend. A trend that implies that there’s stuff you _don’t_ see that is much, much worse. 50+ years of seeing over and over again evil being institutionalized and normalized and welcomed and honored in the best company, and each time you think you’ve seen the worst that humanity is capable of, something else comes along to prove you haven’t.

  5. “Not a care in the world,” except appalling student loan debt, a terrible job market, lack of health care unless you’re one of the lucky ones, worrying about being able to make rent…and of course, potentially dealing with sexual harassment, rape, abusive relationships, serious illness, disability, sick or dying relatives, parenting…

    Yeah, I’ll get right back to not worrying about anything just because I’m under 30, that’s worked for me ever. (I’m having a lot less sexy fun than Republicans think, too).

    1. The only people that get to run around without a care in the world are young RICH people. Everyone else has legitimate concerns trying to build a future.

  6. Riiiight. That’s why most people in academia are progressive in their political views. Because we’re stupid. Or young. Wait. No. It’s that anti-conservative bias in the Ivory Tower that keeps out all the people who really deserve to be there on account of being so smart and mature. Do these people ever reflect on anything before they say it?

  7. My political views are increasingly influenced by anti-capitalist and radical feminist ideas – and that trend that started when I was 12. 8 years have passed since then and I don’t see myself ever going another direction (although to be fair 20 isn’t what most people consider to be “old”).

  9. Thank you, Feministe, for bringing to my attention this gem of a clip from FOX programming. I wouldn’t normally know what goes on there because I don’t consider FOX News my news source; I think of it more of a religious station for worshipping a god I don’t believe in, so I usually take a pass on that one. Plus, I have enough stress in my day, so I try to keep the irritants to a minimum.

    However, after I read your article, which I thought was relevant as well as hilarious, I thought a lot about it and I got really mad; then, last night I could NOT sleep and I grew downright infuriated. Do you realize they are trying to discourage people to vote? In America?! And now I do realize the importance of getting out of my comfort zone every once in a while and subjecting myself to these channels because not only is it stupid programming, it’s dangerous to women.

    I believe these comments, thrown out like humorous little side notes, are masterminded, and insidiously puffed out like nerve gas to poison the air of our young sisters to silence them. The message is clear—and as anti-American as ever—and falls more in line with ISIS dogma than our American Constitution: young girls are only good for what’s in between their legs, so marry them off so they can entertain the men who are smart enough to vote for the right ticket. Keep those little hotties in bed where they belong—and most importantly—keep them out of the polls! Heck, according to them, young women aren’t even good enough to stand on a jury! Sharia Law at its best!

    And don’t we all know that when the youth do go to the polls they overwhelmingly vote Democrat. Well, one thing’s for sure, the Republicans know it, obviously.

    More people of every age should vote. We’d see a lot better things happening in our government if we all would just get off of our chairs and vote! We should be encouraging ALL our youth (young women and men) to participate in voting, not discouraging them! What kind of people does this?!

    And I smell another rat, too: a sort of divide them and they might fall agenda, a sort of Let’s play the old women voters against the “hot” young women voters agenda. Every good ol’ boy loves a cat fight, riiiight?

    Republicans just can’t figure women Democrats out, can they? They thought they’d win the Dem woman’s vote with Palin… Because she’s a woman, right? Hehe… oh, we are just too darn smart for that. So what are they gonna do with us? Pit the old ones against the young ones, discourage the young ones…they are grasping for anything to cancel us out. And why do they want to cancel us out? Because women have POWER in our vote! That’s why!

    I loved the Know Your Limits spoof, and, sadly, it’s dead-on: these silencing tactics are so archaic, and this fight has been going on since forever. Makes me think of that famous pic of the woman holding the sign, Feminism, Back By Popular Demand…‘but don’t call it a comeback, ‘cause I been here for years’…lol Yeah, I’m getting pretty long in the tooth, pushing 40, but—guess what? I’m still hot AND still a hardcore Democrat, ride or die, vote a straight ticket, and will ‘till they put me in the ground, and—BTW, Republicans—I’ll never be YOUR [redacted]. Go Hillary! Let’s get equal wages for those young hot chics on jury duty and for us old hot chic Democrats, too! How ‘ya like that FOX News? Kiss THAT.

  10. Older people have been cluelessly griping about “carefree youths” since even before the The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938.

    I know this not just because it’s well known that older people have been lamenting about younger people since the dawn of man, but because of the stories from my grandfather’s years working in the mines from 1919 to 1936 (age 12 to 29).

    So in the 1920s it was… Those carefree young 15 year olds working in the mines … and their percolator coffee pots, their moonshine & ginseng and their radios!

    Now it’s… Those carefree 21 year olds with a mountain of student loan debt… and their expresso machines, flavored vodka, energy drinks & social media!

    Spare us the dramatics, right?
