Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday

Promote yourself.

Netiquette reminders:

  • Want to recommend someone else’s writing instead? Try the latest signal-boosting thread.
  • we expect Content Notes as a courtesy to our readers for problematic content in linked posts and/or their comment threads (a habit of posting only triggering/disparaging links may annoy the Giraffe (you really don’t want to annoy the Giraffe))
  • extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting –  the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic.  If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.

  1. Last week, I wrote about domestic partner benefits being terminated for employees of Allegheny County (Pittsburgh) – in a week’s time, we had a partial victory of the County extending the benefits to June 2015. But this is a new phenom that could be happening elsewhere. The Affordable Care Act can help – if people know about it. The petition is still live if you would like to join our struggle.

(Content Note – violence against transwomen) There’s also news from Ohio that the man wanted in the murder of Tiffany Edwards has turned himself it, but he’s possibly laying the groundwork for a “transpanic” defense.

(Content Note – ableism) Finally, I have a hidden disability that requires me to sit on the aisle when I attend events like movies and so forth. I tried to request this accommodation from a local Pgh theater (The Manor) and from AMC Loew’s chain. I got nowhere. Now 30 minutes after this blog post was up, AMC Loew’s called me but didn’t have concrete answers.

Did you know that access to free, potable drinking water is not covered under the ADA?

  2. I wrote Our home on native land on Canada Day with specific Canadian references, but in general it applies to the United States as well. It took me a long time to realize fully that we celebrate the birthdays of nations that were built on the someone else’s land. Now I can’t stop thinking about it.

  3. People have many reactions when they learn that a potential partner has herpes — and, depending on how uninformed they are about herpes, their reaction might be tinged with panic or fear. But when someone discloses his or her herpes status, they are demonstrating a sense of responsibility toward their partner’s sexual health.

Learn more about herpes. What is it? How does it spread? How common are symptoms? And how can risk be decreased?

  4. Just what I was looking for.

Jill, please read my story, I’ve decided to break the silence on one of the most harmful things that ruined my life, and I couldn’t do anything to prevent it. It’s my ”coming out” story. I finally gathered the courage to tell the world and petition Obama about it. It hurt writing about it, but I finally got the courage after 24 years since it happened.

Here’s the link: http://wh.gov/lFEUg Thank you.

  5. I completed a comic submission for an anthology that is a tribute to the band “Minutemen”

    Minutemen

note- I hope these links are not too out of place. I know that the comics work I am doing has nothing to do with my feminist leanings (in general anyway, as it’s not a topic of the comic) and anyway, I am just using this Sunday thread as a place to possibly grab a few eyeballs for my art. If it’s too unrelated, please let me know and I won’t post here again.
