Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday May 11, 2014 Jill Promote yourself. Netiquette reminders: Want to recommend someone else’s writing instead? Try the latest signal-boosting thread. we expect Content Notes as a courtesy to our readers for problematic content in linked posts and/or their comment threads (a habit of posting only triggering/disparaging links may annoy the Giraffe (you really don’t want to annoy the Giraffe)) extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting – the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic. If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.
I made a list of top 8 brilliant child performances: http://film-nut.tumblr.com/post/85312818866/top-8-brilliant-child-performances and posted my weekend links: http://film-nut.tumblr.com/post/85410430641/the-weekend-5
The problem with “I have a boyfriend.” A writer argues that it’s better for women not to use a boyfriend, real or fictional, as an excuse to stave off unwanted male attention. Don’t apologize for your privilege, do something about it. Not surprisingly, white men like Tal Fortgang misunderstand what privilege is and why it’s a useful concept.
This week I posted a links round-up for Monday morning. I also posted an article by a former student of mine on street harassment. It’s really exciting how many high-school girls are interested in and informed about feminism! Finally, this one’s an old post, but I shared it again for Mother’s Day – “A feminist’s daughter finds love in feminism“.
We wrote about the the importance of vaccinating infants, shared an overview of genital herpes, and put together a roundup of the latest reproductive-justice-related headlines.
[CN; Medical things] A discussion of a neurological disorder, its symptoms and how it affects me. It was a busy release weak for me both as author and editor. A novel and an anthology I edited [CN: BDSM imagery and excerpt] And an anthology I’m in. CN: sex, gayness, tentacles, NSFW excerpt]
I wrote about: –A Scarleteen update, and thoughts on sustainable funding and “free riders.” -A ton of fat-positive fabulousness this week: The Big Thrifty here in Boston, the Big Fat Flea in New York, the Fat Flash Mob in San Francisco, GabiFresh’s #everyBODYisflawless video and a short film about the Fatshionista LJ community, and International No Diet Day. -I also put up pictures from a fossil fuel divestment rally at the MA State House, and wrote a bit about how it feels like the tides are finally turning for action on climate change.

I wrote about the time that I was a speaker at the Pittsburgh Dyke March and had an anxiety attack. It was awful. A follow up piece to the post about trans bashing in which the trans basher apologizes. Content note: violence against trans persons, language. In 2004, I was named in Pittsburgh’s “40 Under 40” honors. Ten years later, I reflect on 40 ways that impacted my life.
Arkansas made Same-Sex marriage legal this past Friday. There was much rejoicing! I wrote about it here: Arkansas Enters The Century of the Anchovy.
I wrote about how “Family Day” would be a much better substitute for “Mother’s Day”: it does away with the gender stereotyping, includes people who (for whatever reason) don’t have or are not mothers, isn’t grossly heteronormative, and isn’t (yet) obscenely commercialized.

My best post from last week was on choosing ethical materials with my husband for my engagement ring and our wedding bands.
I wrote a blog posting on the double standard of pairing actors on a popular TV show. Essentially the ageism and sexism among viewers believing that pairing older actresses with younger actors is totally wrong whereas pairing older actors with younger actresses is the preferred model. I ran into some vicious comment bashing older women and decided to write about it. http://portcharleschronicles.blogspot.com/2014/05/when-soaps-write-couples-outside-box.html
