Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday

Promote yourself.

Netiquette reminders:

  • we expect Content Notes as a courtesy to our readers for problematic content in linked posts and/or their comment threads (a habit of posting only triggering/disparaging links may annoy the Giraffe (you really don’t want to annoy the Giraffe))
  • extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting –  the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic.  If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.

  1. Throughout this summer, Attention: People With Body Parts working towards our next book with an emphasis on survivors of domestic violence and intersecting communities who have been told or forced to believe that their bodies are not safe-spaces. From now until August 15, we are collecting letters that survivors have written to one of their body parts to publish in a book about reclamation. The pieces will later inspire visual art collaborations and dance performances.

For more details on this letter-drive and Attention: People With Body Parts, please click here.

Please pass it along to survivors and those in solidarity with survivors; accessibility is so important for any body-positive movement.

  2. This anonymous blog is about my life as a feminist mother who chose to prioritize parenting above all else, including my longing to have a full work-life and career, and the ways in which (as I’m only now learning) parental alienation ultimately destroyed my relationship with my daughter and robbed her of not only one parent and side of her family, but one side of herself.

In this post, I write about walking around in a trance for three days after my daughter announced she was moving to her father’s and dropping out of high school.

  3. I’m now co-moderating a tumblr called Body Positive Statues. I’m really excited! Also, if you have any suggestions for body positive art, I would love to hear them – we’re trying to represent as many body types as possible. So drop me an ask!

  4. After seeing a friend advise me to watch the movie Ender’s Game DESPITE the author’s homophobia, I had to jump in and explain why I find the author creepy (not in a good way).

Content Warning: Discusses fictional rape of children.

On the lighter side, I have a post about which Doctor Who Season 7 episodes are good to watch (and which to miss) if you are not that into it / annoyed by the writer or actor / new to the show, “Doctor Who Series 7 for the Reluctant.”

    1. Kristin, I knew Card was a raging homophobe, but I wasn’t aware of these other views. I’ve just promoted your post on my facebook. Thank you.

  5. I have mixed feelings about BDSM and have written a series considering negatives and positives and how I’ve personally come to deal with my ambivalence.

  6. Roe v. Wade was decided 40 years ago. Where are we now? “Generation Roe” author Sarah Erdreich investigates the state of the abortion rights movement in her new book, which we review on our blog!

Is there really a major generational gap between activists from the pre-Roe and post-Roe eras? What threats to reproductive freedom do we face now? Is grassroots activism more effective than the work of large advocacy groups? There’s a lot of food for thought here!

    1. Do you enjoy grindcore but dislike the macho attitudes and sometimes outright sexism and misogyny? Well you’re in luck! Here’s my band “God Mother”, my anti-sexist, anti-racist, anti-religious AND anti-pc grindcore band. Enjoy!

      http://godmothersverige.bandcamp.com/

That’s good stuff. Though to be honest I couldn’t tell if the lyrics were anti-racist or racist, due to the fact that I couldn’t quite make them out.

      1. Haha well, most of the lyrics are in swedish so that would pose a problem, too, but I’m glad you liked it! As a band we care deeply about promoting women in the swedish extreme music scene, which is why it’s unfortunate we couldn’t get a hold of a female frontman. Our first pick would have been the singer of my former band, called Sonia https://soundcloud.com/jonatan-lindgren/sets/sonia, but she was tied up in other projects so we had to settle for her boyfriend instead haha.

  8. 1) A sports blog posts a story about two minor-league baseball players charged with rape.

    2) Several people on the blog respond less than ideally to the news.

    3) I write a quick post anonymously quoting a few of them.

    4) One of them finds my post and proceeds to give an absolute CLINIC in the comments (on my site but even more creepily on several others) on how not to respond when you’ve been called out for your questionable language about rape.

Enjoy? (Note: obviously this is about rape; there is no strong language or imagery in the post.)

  9. This past month I have written more than 20 posts on different techniques that anyone can use to create a richly detailed, fun, and inspiring journal. These techniques range from ways of making lists to awesome eavesdropping to drawing mandalas. They include plenty of stories from my life and those of other women–and I have been keeping journals for more than 40 years! For me they are a joy and each of these posts comes with a writing prompt. Since I believe girls and women can become more authentically themselves through journal writing, I invite you to check it out. The first entry is:

  10. [CN: Death, misogyny]
I haven’t been too talkative on my LJ. It was a difficult week. (Also, my browser is not loving LJ, so apologies on the links)

I had two friends die on July 31. One expected, one not.

On the pro front, The deadline for Monstrously Ever after has been extended.

I am breaking up with a publisher over a variety of offenses. I am disappointed that this is a mid-sized woman-owned press, with primarily female writers and readers.

And I wrote about the current spate of misogyny in SF/F/H. There was a dust-up at Science Fiction Writers of America, and it has brought the woman-hating contingent out in full force.

        1. If you click the link, then delete everything in the address before inkstainedsuccubus, it works.

  11. I finally started a blog guys! It’s called Shojo Power! and it resolves around feminist analysis of anime and the like. Probably not everyone’s cup of tea! I think the article that you guys might find most interesting is my feminist review of Hentai Kamen: The Forbidden Superhero. There are a lot of BDSM and consent issues (read: problems!) in the film.
