Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday August 4, 2013 Jill Promote yourself. Netiquette reminders: we expect Content Notes as a courtesy to our readers for problematic content in linked posts and/or their comment threads (a habit of posting only triggering/disparaging links may annoy the Giraffe (you really don’t want to annoy the Giraffe)) extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting – the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic. If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.
Throughout this summer, Attention: People With Body Parts working towards our next book with an emphasis on survivors of domestic violence and intersecting communities who have been told or forced to believe that their bodies are not safe-spaces. From now until August 15, we are collecting letters that survivors have written to one of their body parts to publish in a book about reclamation. The pieces will later inspire visual art collaborations and dance performances. For more details on this letter-drive and Attention: People With Body Parts, please click here. Please pass it along to survivors and those in solidarity with survivors; accessibility is so important for any body-positive movement.
Two new posts since last week, Appreciation, it’s the little things and ideas on how to Get him to pick up his clothes
I just moved to the Netherlands for graduate school, and wrote a blog post about my first day in the city. Not as feminist-relevant as my usual stuff, but here’s a link if anyone’s interested. 🙂
On female black belts who become victims of rape. [TW: rape; discussion of cavalier and offensive attitudes about rape and women’s self-defense]
This past week, I wrote about my experiences trying to build a “culture of reuse” through a grassroots project that was ultimately not sustainable as a model. But others continue. I’d love feedback as this is project close to my heart.
This anonymous blog is about my life as a feminist mother who chose to prioritize parenting above all else, including my longing to have a full work-life and career, and the ways in which (as I’m only now learning) parental alienation ultimately destroyed my relationship with my daughter and robbed her of not only one parent and side of her family, but one side of herself. In this post, I write about walking around in a trance for three days after my daughter announced she was moving to her father’s and dropping out of high school. http://www.thenotebooksofmotherx.com/archives/450
I’ve got a great guest post from C.S. Jack on the Camp Gyno commercial and why so many grown women are excited about a tampon commercial for teens. I talk about my fear of the squat rack. A trip to Trader Joe’s with my daughter reminds me how hard it must be to “be good” when you are two. My PhD exam reading makes me think more about the plagiarism dispute between a Gawker writer and a WOC on Twitter.
I’m now co-moderating a tumblr called Body Positive Statues. I’m really excited! Also, if you have any suggestions for body positive art, I would love to hear them – we’re trying to represent as many body types as possible. So drop me an ask!
PSA: Your Boobs Are Just Fine. [contains pics of person in bra, may be NSFW] — On bra fitting and body image. Lessons from My Grandmother — She died this summer. So I’m remembering the many things she taught me about coffee, life, and zombies.
I wrote about a post that showed up in my Facebook feed accusing Melissa Harris Perry of condoning infanticide. The video may bork the page if you’re reading on a mobile device. Also, a short creative writing piece about facing my fear of heights And lastly, saying goodbye to my childhood home
Over at delagar, I write about my thoughts on the recent NYTimes parenting column by Catherine Newman, “I Do Not Want My Daughter To Be Nice,” and the (predictable) Conservative outrage over Newman’s not very outrageous post: “Smile, Sunshine: Good Manners and Girls.” Also, a new recipe is up at Cooking With Delagar: “Bread Pudding.” Bonus recipe for rum sauce there!
After seeing a friend advise me to watch the movie Ender’s Game DESPITE the author’s homophobia, I had to jump in and explain why I find the author creepy (not in a good way). Content Warning: Discusses fictional rape of children. On the lighter side, I have a post about which Doctor Who Season 7 episodes are good to watch (and which to miss) if you are not that into it / annoyed by the writer or actor / new to the show, “Doctor Who Series 7 for the Reluctant.”
Kristin, I knew Card was a raging homophobe, but I wasn’t aware of these other views. I’ve just promoted your post on my facebook. Thank you.
I have mixed feelings about BDSM and have written a series considering negatives and positives and how I’ve personally come to deal with my ambivalence. Why Women Want Shades of Grey http://broadblogs.com/2013/04/29/why-women-want-shades-of-grey/ Learning to Like Torture in Shades of Grey http://broadblogs.com/2013/06/17/learning-to-like-torture-in-shades-of-grey/ Shades of Making Sexism Sexy http://broadblogs.com/2013/07/08/shades-of-making-sexism-sexy/ Fifty Shades of Pro-Orgasm http://broadblogs.com/2013/07/29/fifty-shades-of-pro-o/
Roe v. Wade was decided 40 years ago. Where are we now? “Generation Roe” author Sarah Erdreich investigates the state of the abortion rights movement in her new book, which we review on our blog! Is there really a major generational gap between activists from the pre-Roe and post-Roe eras? What threats to reproductive freedom do we face now? Is grassroots activism more effective than the work of large advocacy groups? There’s a lot of food for thought here!

Privilege and PTSD: We live in a web of privilege and marginalization that affects how we express boundaries. Truth Across Lines of Authority
I had a ridiculous time trying to refinance my home to get my ex-fiancé’s name off the mortgage: http://theparkavepub.blogspot.com/2013/08/refinance-part-2-wherein-i-want-to.html
This week on Kiss My Wonder Woman, we looked at a whole bunch of stuff. Fast and Furious 6 models an ideal community Finn from Adventure Time is an awesome role model Civil War asks whether you’d rather be safe or free The Wolverine passed the Bechdel Test, but it still failed Strong Female Character Friday, featuring Ellen from Supernatural Tune in this week for a review of Turbo, RED 2, and Welcome to Night Vale.
Do you enjoy grindcore but dislike the macho attitudes and sometimes outright sexism and misogyny? Well you’re in luck! Here’s my band “God Mother”, my anti-sexist, anti-racist, anti-religious AND anti-pc grindcore band. Enjoy! http://godmothersverige.bandcamp.com/
Do you enjoy grindcore but dislike the macho attitudes and sometimes outright sexism and misogyny? Well you’re in luck! Here’s my band “God Mother”, my anti-sexist, anti-racist, anti-religious AND anti-pc grindcore band. Enjoy! http://godmothersverige.bandcamp.com/ That’s good stuff. Though to be honest I couldn’t tell if the lyrics were anti-racist or racist, due to the fact that I couldn’t quite make them out.
Haha well, most of the lyrics are in swedish so that would pose a problem, too, but I’m glad you liked it! As a band we care deeply about promoting women in the swedish extreme music scene, which is why it’s unfortunate we couldn’t get a hold of a female frontman. Our first pick would have been the singer of my former band, called Sonia https://soundcloud.com/jonatan-lindgren/sets/sonia, but she was tied up in other projects so we had to settle for her boyfriend instead haha.
I wrote this forever ago but I’m proud of it and no one has commented on it, so I’m linking it here to see if any of y’all like it. It’s about the treatment of autism in The Feminine Mystique. Blaming the Patriarchy for Autistic Children
This week I wrote about …the whole, “I should be able to say [offensive thing X]. YOU’RE the one giving it power!” BS …the women in The Wolverine …and only caring about women when they are connected to a man/narcissistic fatherhood. [Content note: dehumanization of women, misogynistic slurs, slut shaming, verbal abuse, fat shaming. Just a whole lot of triggers, really.]
1) A sports blog posts a story about two minor-league baseball players charged with rape. 2) Several people on the blog respond less than ideally to the news. 3) I write a quick post anonymously quoting a few of them. 4) One of them finds my post and proceeds to give an absolute CLINIC in the comments (on my site but even more creepily on several others) on how not to respond when you’ve been called out for your questionable language about rape. Enjoy? (Note: obviously this is about rape; there is no strong language or imagery in the post.) http://ablogoftheirown.wordpress.com/2013/08/02/dont-be-an-almost-ally/
Jailbreaking the patriarchy on Pope Francis’ declaration of the theme for the next World Day of Peace: Sisterhood, the Foundation and Pathway to Peace.
I look back at the most interesting BL (aka lady pr0n) I have translated. (No NSFW images, but we’re talking about sexytimes, so some NSFW/triggering words maybe)
This past month I have written more than 20 posts on different techniques that anyone can use to create a richly detailed, fun, and inspiring journal. These techniques range from ways of making lists to awesome eavesdropping to drawing mandalas. They include plenty of stories from my life and those of other women–and I have been keeping journals for more than 40 years! For me they are a joy and each of these posts comes with a writing prompt. Since I believe girls and women can become more authentically themselves through journal writing, I invite you to check it out. The first entry is: https://135journals.wordpress.com/2013/07/05/july-is-journaling-month/
[CN: Death, misogyny] I haven’t been too talkative on my LJ. It was a difficult week. (Also, my browser is not loving LJ, so apologies on the links) I had two friends die on July 31. One expected, one not. On the pro front, The deadline for Monstrously Ever after has been extended. I am breaking up with a publisher over a variety of offenses. I am disappointed that this is a mid-sized woman-owned press, with primarily female writers and readers. And I wrote about the current spate of misogyny in SF/F/H. There was a dust-up at Science Fiction Writers of America, and it has brought the woman-hating contingent out in full force.
In the midst of this, this seems more relevant: my own story of sexual harassment in philosophy. Texas wants to make an adoption education course mandatory for all women seeking an abortion. Mitt Romney sucks. Something nicer.
I wrote an update of my new year’s resolution to focus on radical self care. http://sistrenista.com/?p=338
I wrote an article at the Chicago Tribune on the resistance to I/R romance novels by mainstream (translation: white) readers.
I finally started a blog guys! It’s called Shojo Power! and it resolves around feminist analysis of anime and the like. Probably not everyone’s cup of tea! I think the article that you guys might find most interesting is my feminist review of Hentai Kamen: The Forbidden Superhero. There are a lot of BDSM and consent issues (read: problems!) in the film.
My thoughts on Hugo Schwyzer’s departure, and all the things wrong with his goodbye post. Also various songs I listened to in celebration.
