This week I wondered why society celebrates women who stay ‘glamourous’ while working in traditionally male-dominated professions. http://canbebitter.wordpress.com/2012/09/11/why-should-women-stay-glamourous-while-working-in-traditionally-male-dominated-careers/

A new Facebook page devoted to the repulsive “Kitchen Cabinet,” which co-opts the language of feminism to push its awful conservative agenda. Click/”like” if you find it entertaining and motivating to remember just how wretched the right wing can be…. http://www.facebook.com/TheGarbageDisposal Thanks!
I’m Proposing a New Honorific: Sister Doctor, for use by vowed religious women with doctorates, and explaining why this is a feminist issue. Spread the word! My fall semester has begun, and I’m taking suggestions for Topics in Early Church History for my two papers: Is there something you’ve always been curious about? Convince me it’s really interesting, and maybe I’ll research it for you. 🙂

In Fromage (where “cheesy” is a good thing)… Bluebird of distraction explains why I missed last Sunday’s SSPS. To live and die is a spontaneous angry/sad/compassionate outburst about suicide (specifically, that of Kurt Cobain). You know whether you should read this or not. In My cup runneth over, I try to deal with the information overload I claim to love. And in For love or money, I edge toward becoming an Amanda Palmer cultist. And weigh in on the crowdsourcing controversy.

Plank pictures are up for Everyday Yoga. If you’re interested in submitting a photo for the next round, it’s cobra time. On how I learned to like gym class again — “The class itself was an unlikely mix of students — half hardcore, four-season varsity athletes and half people who looked like they’d been plopped in from another dimension. I was in the latter group.” And, yoga taught me was that it’s okay to touch myself — “What I mean is, yoga taught me that touching myself — even touching myself in places that are often sexualized — can be part of a functional resettling of my body to my own purposes.”
I wrote about some of the problems associated with showing emotion as a female in the male dominated field of engineering.
A quieter-than-usual week at MMW: Merium’s response to an article on Muslims at Catholic colleges in the US, which made the issue seem much more dramatic than it really is. Azra went to this year’s big convention of the Islamic Society of North America, and reports that she was pleasantly surprised at most of it (particularly the environmental themes), but (unsurprisingly) disappointed at the low number of female speakers. And as usual, Anneke posted a great list of Friday Links, bringing together media stories about Muslim women from around the world.
My lesbian werewolf novel, Lunatic Fringe, turns 1 this week. Curve called it “Enthralling, empowering, and well written” and Pornokitch said it’s “a pretty foxy romance and an excellent exploration of groups and identity.” I’m working on the sequel now.
‘Cause when you’re fifteen and some Scottish guy tells you he loves you (and that you should totally break him out of jail, steal you father’s horses and money and run off with him) you’re gonna believe him… Seriously though, this ballad did remind me of that Taylor Swift song a bit: http://betterknowachildballad.wordpress.com/2012/09/14/child-9-the-fair-flower-of-northumberland/
I just released a mythic fantasy short story, and an erotic romance. The story is free and the romance is cheap for a limited time 🙂 http://clarissethorn.com/blog/2012/09/16/switch-seductress-is-out-now-also-free-copy-of-the-end-of-an-age/
We posted about Title X programs, which were signed into law by Richard freakin’ Nixon and provide free or sliding-scale family-planning and sexual health services to low-income individuals. Everyone should have access to these services regardless of their income, so let’s all thank Richard freakin’ Nixon for widening access. Bonus: We were able to get the piece on Title X translated into Spanish! We also posted about the surprising advantages of female condoms in observance of Global Female Condom Day (September 12, if you missed it!).

Considering the unfortunate prevalence of guys who demand your attention, I wrote about a recent OKCupid experience. And here I think about making my mum a grandma.
Final thoughts about the treatment of female athletes by the press during the London Olympics in: Artistry and Misogyny And a long awaited-post where I talk about boobs (yay) and my futile search to find an un-padded bra for my small breasts: A Bra of One’s Own
I’ve been neglecting my blog for a while now, but I finally came across something that made me angry enough to write a post about. Some jerk wrote about “50 Mistakes Women Make While Having Sex” that was more of a perfect example of rape culture than anything else. Here’s my response:
Hmm . . . for some reason the link isn’t showing up. Here’s the address if you’d like to copy & paste (sorry). http://megankarius.com/2012/09/17/50-messed-up-expectations/
Child labour and bad grammar – I do know that one of these things is worse than the other. Honest. Also, having moved in with the dude, finance and romance are getting a lot of discussion.
BPAS Debate – Freedom of Speech, Anti-Abortion Protestors and Women: Rights and Limits — On Tuesday evening, the British Pregnancy Advisory Service hosted a debate about how far anti-abortionists’ right to freedom of speech extends, and how to balance this with women’s rights. Here’s my account.
I wrote a short post, a reaction to a lot of things written about Naomi Wolf’s “ousting” from feminism; and talked aboutt how class is discussed in liberal circles.
Well, I went into the Scottish Parliament and got shouted at by an MSP. Because saving sex workers is totally the same as shouting at them.
I wrote about my visit to Re/Dress NYC last year, a plus-size clothing store that is sadly no longer open. Also, a bit of fat hatred that I came across in an otherwise good book, and the frustration of being unable to escape fatphobia even while reading a book that’s not at all about looks.
Trading Spines– I agree to read Ron Paul’s book End the Fed in exchange for any book of my choosing. It was harder than I thought to pick a book. “Free Range” v. Zoned Out: How Do You Keep From Going Crazy– A light-hearted and admittedly funny piece in Motherlode mocks a mother for following her kids around the playground instead of zoning out on the bench. It stirred up the ongoing dichotomy of “free range” on one end and “attachment parenting” on the other, which I think is a false one.
I made my first web comic yesterday, called An audience with Mr. Heckler, to illustrate the concept of the Heckler’s Veto. It’s not funny and not terribly well-made (sorry– it was harder than I expected!), but hopefully it at least gets the point across.
A Steampunk’s Guide to Sex is doing fabulously on Kickstarter! But you can still become a backer and get the book/ e-book and other rad stuff. And on Strip for This– A post about Dragon*Con! A Steampunk’s Guide to Sex, Fun Photos, Sexism in “The Guild” Panel, and Lessons for Next Year.
I just wanted to say Happy New Year to all the Jews who won’t be self-promoting due to Rosh Hashanah. Happy 5773! You don’t look a day over 5770.

This week I wrote about a little rant about the problems with rape-prevention tips: We just can’t win (because of rape culture).
1 + 1 = 2: Why I’m Not Looking for My “Other Half” Aaaand that’s it, because I had no computer for most of the week. 🙁
An announcement about our feminist SF anthology, The Other Half of The Sky, due out in 2013. http://delagar.blogspot.com/2012/09/more-news-of-other-half-of-sky.html And here’s a link to the TOC: http://delagar.blogspot.com/2012/09/toc-for-other-half-of-sky.html
This week at the Provider Project, Amy reported from the RNC on a ridiculous GOP delegate dressed as Abe Lincoln who distinguished “brutal rape” from the “rape of a girl or lady who’s inebriated.” Kelly continues her monthly profile of radical feminist figures in health history with a profile of Margaret Charles Smith and the Grand Midwives.
