From now on, I’m just going to link to this piece any time a discussion on this topic begins (“You need to read The Sexual Politics of Meat!” “Ah, number 2.”) and call Bingo when they all show up.
I see our intrepid Feministe author moonlights as a PETA internet article message board troll: 7. Bacon is yum. I eat bacon whenever I see a vegetarian post on a message board. Sometimes I make myself throw up so I can eat the bacon twice.
They left out my favorite: PETA are just media whores who care more about celebrities and donations than animals. Support the ASPCA, HSUS or your local animal welfare/rescue group instead. OK, thanks, buh-bye.
Nicole Cliffe, have you been reading Feministe? Maybe, but if so she left out the bits about hats and pilots. And she forgot the popcorn.
They left out my favorite: People of Color: Comparing factory farming to slavery and black people to animals is deeply problematic. White people: OMG, no it’s not! Factory farming IS slavery, and we’re all animals anyway! You’re just speciesist!
Would someone mind explaining what kind of place The Hairpin is? I’ve never heard of of it before, but I really liked that list.
Im confused about comment 2. It’s been several ywars since I’ve read TSPoM but I thought it was valid feminist criticism of the portrayal of gender in meat and meat eating. Is there irony I’m missing?

Jillian: I believe the point of the article is not that these are not valid points to make or that those arguments don’t have merit. Rather, the article is just pointing out things that are said during the vast majority of discussions about PETA. It’s about laughing at how most of those discussion threads are virtually identical.
I also love the weird thread subplots that involve religious dietary restrictions and the OMG FUCK YOU FOR BEING RELIGIOUS and the NO, FUCK *YOU* that tends to follow.
Would someone mind explaining what kind of place The Hairpin is? I’ve never heard of of it before, but I really liked that list. How to explain the awesomeness that is The Hairpin? They’re a site full of interesting news and witty remarks, geared towards women in the best possible way, progressive and hip without being overly ironic. Charlotte is right that it’s “exactly what Jezebel should be but isn’t”—it avoids reinforcing stereotypes (gender and otherwise), has way less problematic shit, and leaves out all of the gossip. It’s intellectual in the best possible way—long, philosophical games of Fuck/Marry/Kill, articles on bra fashion in the Jacobean era, essays about gossip about actors from the 1940s, and columns like “Ask a Queer Chick,” “Ask a Married Dude,” and “Ask a Clean Person.” Oh, also, “The Best Time I Ever….[insert thing the person really only did one time].”

I’m rather surprised, as most of these comments are moderated by PETA, or is that the joke? I mean, really who do they think they’re going to get by parading half dressed women around like circus animals? Men who really care about animals, or some frat boys who want to ogle a woman? I think it’s also very insulting to girls who want to advocate for animals, to feel the only way they can do that is to pornify themselves. Then again, isn’t that how it always is with women trying to speak out?
