I connected what happened in Oakland this week to feminism: http://angleboc.blogspot.com/2011/10/world-spins-madly-on_28.html
hey everybody, after a longer break i have written two posts this week: occupying boundaries, thematises the paradoxies of “openness” as a political concept for social justice initiatives and movements, i.e. that this idea(l) often result in the perpetuation of discrimination, as experiences with “occupy wall street” and other movements have shown. the second one, flamboyantly titled go fuck yourself and basically a rant about german white privilege, is about the newest racist fail in germany: the experiences of an afro-german author and activist who had been invited to a “festival against racism” and yet was surrounded by a wall of white privilege and racist reponses to her critique.
Total lesbian in the not so city looking for love in all the wrong places. I play roller derby and admire girls in fishnets and booty shorts… deal with it. I talk mainly about relationships, love, roller derby and my career as a personal trainer but every now and again I stray to a different topic.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month Blog Carnival [TW domestic violence] — Ten of us ended up sharing our stories about domestic violence. They’re linked from the hub post. Unwisely: Part 3 and Part 4 [TW for relationship abuse and self-harm] — The parts of my story when: a) we started hanging out later, and b) I started lying to my mom. Already Doing [TW fat shaming] — A small rant on people who comment about why I’m not losing weight. Path of Least Resistance — An asana post, sort of, on how realigning my body to get the most out of my practice is, well, uncomfortable physical and mental work. Chair Yoga: Speaking of Warriors — Another asana post, this time looking at pelvic nerve damage, warrior 1, and a chair as a support prop.
A commentary on gender essentialism, and why it’s not a ‘failure’ either to be a mother and/or housewife, or to choose not to. http://procnetheswallow.wordpress.com/2011/10/30/why-i-dont-need-to-be-a-doctor/
Do we privilege certain types of violence over others? I wrote a post on the importance of artists’ personal narratives, and why we view the violent murder of a human by Caravaggio as part of a narrative of troubled genius, but the murder of an animal by Tom Otterness as the actions of somebody sick and twisted. Feel free to share your thoughts!
A few short notes on what I like to call “Invisible Racism”: http://disciplineandanarchy.wordpress.com/2011/10/30/invisible-racism/
I wrote a post about whether the rhetoric of Barbie’s I Can Be campaign matches the actual products and one about appropriating other cultures for Halloween costumes.
The hypocrisy of domestic violence: http://clarissasblog.com/2011/10/28/the-hypocrisy-of-domestic-violence/ Are good men scarce? I wrote about the necessary space between friends and enemies: http://www.nerdyfeminist.com/2011/10/space-between-friends-and-enemies.html and I responded to Jimi Izrael’s piece on Amber Rose: http://www.nerdyfeminist.com/2011/10/jimi-izrael-epic-disappointment.html

How does sex work abolitionism stop trafficking? Hint: it doesn’t. http://feministire.wordpress.com/2011/10/30/what-happens-to-the-victims/
This week we found out that our baby-to-be is a boy. Here, a tongue-in-cheek list of all the reasons why we’re relieved not to have a girl (tongue-in-cheek!!!), and then a small rant about the idiotic things strangers will say to a pregnant woman who is having a boy: http://greyskiesnyc.blogspot.com/2011/10/dude.html Also, my Dancing With the Stars Week 6 post-mortem: http://greyskiesnyc.blogspot.com/2011/10/dancing-with-stars-post-mortem-week-6.html – Meredith L. ** ** ** ** ** ** Grey Skies: Read. This week I wrote about the ways we pit women with children against those without, and I started a new feature where I break down some popular songs with themes of gender and sexism.
Female boxing is coming to the Olympics, but uh, they’re likely going to have to wear skirts. http://transplantportation.com/2011/10/28/dividing-title-ix/
The relationship between the sexes in Islam: http://thefatalfeminist.wordpress.com/2011/10/28/intentional-malice-the-exclusiveness-of-sex-and-the-superiority-of-the-male/
This week I reposted something I originally wrote elsewhere, rebutting a HuffPo article about owing one’s spouse sex. TW rape culture.
Who counts in talking about social justice?: ‘It’s not that nobody cares. It’s just that supposed social justice rhetoric shouldn’t be calling marginalised people nobody.’ Race on children’s television: Remember when Lizzie McGuire replaced a black actor with a monkey? Yeah.
Halloween Fun at the Toronto Zombie Walk !! I’ve got some red on me I wrote about TSA-gate but that was before everything went apeshit. I’m not going to link it, since Jill has expressed desire for the whole thing to go away but it’s there if anyone wants to read it.
This week I wrote a post comparing “We are the 99 Percent” to “We are the 53%,” and how they share similar experiences but interpret those experiences in different ways, with the 99-ers emphasizing collective action while the 53-ers emphasize individualism. http://tinyurl.com/3rx9sq2
I just posted a super spoilery review of Dennis Cooper’s novel The Marbled Swarm at Keep Your Bridges Burning. The book comes out on Tuesday.
An op-ed I wrote against the rampant racism in Halloween costumes that stereotype non-White cultures.
Oh, and also Gaddafi: http://thefatalfeminist.wordpress.com/2011/10/30/gadhafi-was-sodomized-before-executed/
Not Your Mama’s Gamer has a series of 3 posts on our 5 scariest games. One focuses on indie games , one is a bit nostalgic , and the last one is about why the games were scary for me . Lots of fun, check it out!
Here is a post of my picks for the top 5 feminist games. I’d love some feedback or any ideas for additions to the list.
A quick post I did about Inappropriate Sexy Halloween costumes (first time linker, hope that formats okay!)
A reader tells me hell is a thing; I respond with a potent blend of scorn, self-deprecation, and Latin – Hell: Still Not A Thing. I have some thoughts on gender presentation, friendship, stimming, and general Awkwardness.
I have started a campaign against Hamleys toyshop in London – a huge toyshop on the High Street which segregates its toys according to gender. Lobbying for a stop to gender segregation of toys, restricting children’s choices and futures and contributing to our society’s inequality! http://delilah-mj.blogspot.com/2011/10/hamleys-toy-shop-promotes-gender.html
I was inspired this week by the Miss Representation film premier and by the Name It, Change It campaign against media sexism. This one is about Hillary Clinton’s scrunchie and how we emphasize women’s appearance in order to trivialize whatever comes out of their mouths. What She Says Does Not Matter
Lots to mention this week, some relationship/dating stuff, and some musical stuff. First, I wrote about “‘x’ is code for ‘sex'” and why I prefer a more direct approach than “want to come in for coffee?” Leaping off from that sexual talk, I then went on to wonder “what’s my number? and came up with five possible answers… Finally, I took some relationship advice from a dating blog I read, and considered how does an ethical Dom date Miss Insecurity? – translating the advice for my own sexual expression. With the music, the most recent post is political, and basically a plug for Talis Kimberley’s new song about the Occupy LSE/St Paul’s Cathedral situation. Talis asks for the song to be as widely available as possible, and she is a songwriter whose work is worth becoming familiar with. Finally, I wrote about why the lyrics of McFly’s “All About You” make me flinch (Trigger warning on that post for discussion of domestic violence mentalities.)
First I declared my undying love to Ramona Flowers, http://rachelahanson.wordpress.com/2011/10/25/scott-pilgrim-vs-the-world-and-sexuality/ And then talked about how female sexuality is not for sale, http://rachelahanson.wordpress.com/2011/10/27/female-sexuality-is-not-a-commodity/
I wrote a few things about Occupy DC: Some thoughts on getting involved in Occupy DC and trying to work out what its goals were The proposed counter protest at Occupy DC and ponderings about free-loaders.
NY Daily News Adds Insult to Murder: The NY Daily News rather deliberately mocks a gender nonconforming murder victim who was also a POC. What the f*ck made them think that was okay? Politician Blames College, Marijuana for her Brush with Same-Sex Pedophilia: This is my favorite current news story. So many clichés! I also discuss the disturbing way the MSM has treated the incident, dubbing it a “lesbian affair” when in fact the person in question, politician Linda Wall, was an adult teacher who sexually molested one of her junior high students. It’s called rape, not “affair”.
I decided to point out to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee that they have a serious problem with women, http://curtrice.wordpress.com/2011/10/12/the-nobel-peace-prizes-problem-with-women/ and to the royal houses of Europe that they, uh, have a serious problem with women, http://curtrice.wordpress.com/2011/10/29/the-royal-glass-ceiling-why-cant-women-be-kings/
