Dirty Girl Ministries

The title of the ministry — and the tagline “Dirty Girls Come Clean” — makes it sound like this could be a pretty fun church. Sadly no!

The No Stones recovery group is part of an organization called Dirty Girls Ministries that Renaud launched in 2009 after suffering from her own self-described pornography addiction. She says she wanted to help other women recover from their X-rated fixations by connecting with them online and holding meetings at her local church. But her use of the terms porn and addiction may be misleading. The growing group of 100-plus members who participate in the forums say that they masturbate or view porn—which they define as including erotica and romance novels—twice a week or less. For most of us, that would hardly be considered excessive. But to Renaud, it indicates an epidemic of addiction, one that can be treated by helping women stay “clean” of masturbation.

Masturbating twice a week or less? That is a problem. Lots of women clearly need more free time to spend alone with themselves.

While many of the women she counsels report turning to pornography as a form of escape—from traumas like sexual abuse, infidelity, and even prostitution—Renaud compares their masturbation to alcoholism, saying that “like drugs and alcohol, so many things that feel good in a short amount of time can end up hurting you.”

Sure, if you’re the masturbating equivalent to an alcoholic, maybe you have a problem? Like, if your masturbation schedule is getting in the way of work and socializing? Or you become a physical danger to yourself and others because of overgrown forearms, or rage at anyone who gets between you and your Hitachi? Or if you masturbate so much that you can’t walk? Or you find yourself masturbating while driving, to potentially disastrous and deadly consequences? If that is the case, definitely get help, no joke. But I suspect that for most people, masturbation is like moderate alcohol consumption, or perhaps eating a nice cheese: Feels good, can actually be good for you, is healthy in moderation, relieves stress, can be immensely pleasurable, and generally makes you a happier and more pleasant person. And masturbation is not like alcohol or cheese insofar as even doing it a whole lot probably won’t hurt anyone or clog your arteries or damage your liver. It’ll just be fun and pleasurable, and you’ll sleep better too.

But wait, I used the word “pleasure,” and that’s the problem:

Renaud’s advocacy is labeled antipornography, but it aims to treat all masturbation, whether it involves porn or not. When you peel back the layers, the core of her crusade is against sexual thought—even within marriage—unless those thoughts are about your husband while you are engaging in intercourse with him.

Sounds like a quick route to never having an orgasm. And I wonder what she would do with David Jay, an asexual man who doesn’t experience sexual attraction and doesn’t feel drawn to have sex, but still masturbates because touching himself feels good. Is he allowed to masturbate, assuming he isn’t having sexual thoughts?

Dirty Girls member Amy Christine Proctor, a self-described addict and a flight attendant from Colorado, started masturbating while she was visiting chat rooms on AOL. Unmarried and a virgin at 30, Proctor has struggled with her sexual identity since puberty, believing her same-sex thoughts are a sin. Last year, she says, she was masturbating almost daily, sometimes twice a day. To rehabilitate herself, she became an active member of Dirty Girls Ministries and started driving two hours to attend a 12-step program for sex addicts called Heart to Heart.

1. AOL chatrooms.

2. “She was masturbating almost daily, sometimes twice a day.” If that’s horrific and debilitating masturbation addiction — ALMOST DAILY! — I’ve got some Charlie Sheen Tiger Clit going.

Although Proctor still struggles with relapses, she praises Renaud’s ministry. Women and girls who have gone through the rehabilitation process and have become “clean” report feeling free and blissful in their new masturbation- and porn-free lives. Many have viewed their masturbation habits as products of emotional burdens or past traumas, and they describe the rehab process as therapeutic. They say they have found support, community, and friendship in Renaud’s group and feel relieved to finally discuss the taboo subject freely.

So I know the “clean” language is part of recovery-speak — getting “clean” after addiction to drugs or alcohol. But in the context of discussing sexuality it seems… more problematic (and from the Christian perspective, intentionally loaded).

The narrative about “masturbation addiction” being about past traumas is also (obviously) factually incorrect. Most women masturbate. Tons of women who have never survived experienced trauma masturbate. Tons of women who have survived trauma, sexual or otherwise, masturbate — not because they’re broken, but because they’re human beings who feel sexual urges despite having gone through some bad shit. And because masturbation feels good. And because people like to feel good, even when someone else has made them feel really bad. Capitalizing on trauma — shaming women for natural urges and for enjoying what’s between their legs even after someone did harm to their body and their spirit — is cruel and sick and evil.

Renaud didn’t date in high school, and she has never had a boyfriend. “I would love to find ‘the one’ and get married and start a family,” she says. “When the time comes, God will bring him about, and it will happen.” But in the meantime, she hopes more women will break free from their addiction to sexual stimulation and embark, with her, on a 12-step path to salvation.

Oh.

Is there not one brave man out there willing to sacrifice himself so the female populace can be free to pleasure themselves?

  2. I’m sorry, but as sad as this article is, it’s by far the funniest thing I’ve read all week. :-p

  3. Somebody’s mixing up her causations. People feel bad about masturbating because they have assholes like her telling them it’s wrong and dirty and shameful, not because there’s anything inherently wrong with it. This is the same line of . . . I hesitate to say “reasoning,” that leads people to ignore the homophobic bullying and assume that gayness causes suicide.

“Hey, don’t knock masturbation, it’s sex with someone I love.” —Woody Allen.

“Almost daily” masturbation a problem? Erotica a problem? Fuck this person! I read erotica, I write erotica, I roleplay gay/genderqueer robot BDSM, and I masturbate, and if I have a problem, it’s not that I need a twelve-step program, it’s that I need a new vibrator because the cap that holds the batteries in is broken.

  4. Seriously…

Just another perpetuation that female sexual desire is wrong wrong wrong and that women are only supposed to be targets of male desire and passive vessels from which children emerge (a process that is OBVIOUSLY not sexual in nature, nor is it messy or painful or complicated or sometimes tragic – it’s only ever perfect and pure and beautiful).

I probably own sex toys that would make this woman’s head explode – and don’t even get me started on my porn collection.

    1. This is why I didn’t want to get married. Now sex is not dirty any more. 🙁

Don’t worry girl, it’s still dirty if you have any sexual thoughts about anything or anyone other than Mr. Kristin J, at any time other than when he is penetrating you vaginally in the missionary position in an effort solely intended to impregnate you. I mean, I don’t know your life, but I’m guessing you still break the rules and are a filthy woman. So that’s good news!

      1. Wheew! I feel better now. Otherwise I was going to suggest that we refrain from dusting for a few weeks. 😛

  6. Kyra:
I read erotica, I write erotica, I roleplay gay/genderqueer robot BDSM,

    I start thinking:
“Can robots have gender? If they aren’t capable of sexually reproducing but are choosing to engage in performative human gender couldn’t you argue all robot sex is genderqueer?”
Which somehow leads me to R. Daneel Olivaw giving a lecture on “The Laws of Robotic Sexy Times” right before he cranks up the fuck saw…

  7. It would have been awesome if the reporter actually used my quotes in context or even paraphrased close to the truth of what I said to her. I am not nor have I ever been on a crusade against masturbation. I couldn’t care less if a woman masturbates. My concern is whether or not the behavior a woman is involved is compulsive and their lives have become unmanageable because of their actions. Porn, masturbation, etc. are secondary to the care I have for these women and their emotional health. This idea is obviously contrary to the reporter’s agenda and it’s really too bad that my cause was portrayed in such a negative light.

    1. So, Crystal, you didn’t write “What is liberating about a woman being in bondage to her own perverse sexuality?” on your own blog? And I’m just curious how you define “compulsive” masturbation — how often counts as a compulsion?

  8. Scrumby: You are awesome.

Cat: I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily saying female sexual desire is wrong, per se, but that sexual desire period is WRONG WRONG WRONG unless it is with your lawfully wedded heterosexual spouse. I highly doubt they have a better opinion of men masturbating, you know?

  9. Excuse me while I dash to the ladies’ to indulge my nymphomania…

This should really go without saying: there is no inherent value in either a) not masturbating, or b) masturbating LOTS and LOTS. As someone who masturbated not at all for the first ~25 years of my life, has since been more of a twice-a-day girl (if not, you know, 4-5-6-7-15 times on a lazy Sunday) I just do not get the obsession with women engaging in self-pleasure as if it’s going to lead to ruin. WTF.

  10. All I have to say about this is “Dirty Girl Ministries” would be a great name for an alternative rock band, a satirical culture-jamming group, or a line of toiletries.

  11. Sheelzebub:

I’m in if anyone wants to start that band.

  12. Sheelzebub: All I have to say about this is “Dirty Girl Ministries” would be a great name for an alternative rock band, a satirical culture-jamming group, or a line of toiletries.

I can play a mean tambourine!

There’s really only one instrument I’ve dedicated myself to strumming and unfortunately it’s not for public display, but I’ll definitely be a groupie.

  14. I feel really uncomfortable in these discussions, because several people I care about (including people in my family) see themselves as sex addicts and I do think that people are too skeptical of the reality of sex addiction. And for the women I know, it meant that their sexual practices were part of a larger pattern of self-hatred; wanting to have the good feelings from sex, but not believing they deserved to have good sex with people who didn’t treat them like shit. So if that is *really* the population that she is trying to help, then I applaud her work.

But let’s get real. The reason that people are skeptical of sex addiction is because there are so many people who use the language of sex addiction to describe normal sexual behavior and the shame that people feel for doing sexual things that they do enjoy and that do make them happy but that they have been told are wrong. And it’s unfair for women who really do experience sex addiction to compare someone who masturbates and has been told that is wrong, with someone who has unprotected sex with strangers she’s not even attracted to because she is full of self-loathing and doesn’t believe she’s worthy of protection from disease.

  15. “Can robots have gender? If they aren’t capable of sexually reproducing but are choosing to engage in performative human gender couldn’t you argue all robot sex is genderqueer?”

Any social community can have gender. They do not have biological sex-differentiation, although I’ve heard it argued that they could have polarity of some sort. The robots I play (Transformers) are generally considered mostly “male” with a few “female” ones that have various explanations; I prefer to think that they do not have gender but humans, being so wrapped up in the concept, tend to apply gender to them by either defaulting male or by some of their characteristics meshing with a given gender.

    (possible TMI)

Depending on the partner, sometimes they have both in-pointing and out-pointing sexual organs, and sometimes they don’t and instead just get off via tactile/situational stimulation, or via certain species-specific anatomical features that may be canon or pulled out of the roleplayers’ asses.

  16. I am not nor have I ever been on a crusade against masturbation. I couldn’t care less if a woman masturbates. My concern is whether or not the behavior a woman is involved is compulsive and their lives have become unmanageable because of their actions. The growing group of 100-plus members who participate in the forums say that they masturbate or view porn—which they define as including erotica and romance novels—twice a week or less.

Really not getting how twice-a-week erotica or masturbation could be compulsive and making one’s life unmanageable. You poop more than twice a week, is there a twelve-step program for that?

Unless of course one is feeding off of (and feeding) the sort of overmoralistic, self-depriving, pleasure-phobic school of thought that convinces women that they have a sinful and life-wrecking problem if they get themselves off on occasion.

  17. My concern is whether or not the behavior a woman is involved is compulsive and their lives have become unmanageable because of their actions.

No, no, you see the problem here isn’t that we aren’t hearing what you’re saying because you’ve been misquoted, the problem is that we believe you to be full of shit because you’re using dogwhistles which may, in fact, be formed from shit.

    To your blog, shall we?

From Roe v. Wade to lesbianism to birth control, women’s liberation movements have made it their platform to give women a right over their own bodies…Some good and some not so good have come out if it. But fast forward to today, and we see that women are once again in a fight for liberation.

Seeing as you’re miffed about context, lets consider the context. You’re working from a Christian perspective in America. Part of the context there is that Evangelicals in the US, the kinds of people we see talking about purity and sexual morality and giving approving nods to traditional feminine submissiveness, have traditionally demonized feminists for being babykillers, whores, and lesbians. Given this context, I find it suspicious that you just happened to invoke abortion, birth control, and lesbianism before you crusade against

the trans- formation of women from sexually submissive into sexually aggressive…and sexually obsessed.

See what you did there? You followed the narrative of evangelicals almost exactly. You tied freedom from biology (birth control), bodily autonomy (abortion), and freedom of choice/conscience (sexual orientation) to liberation and then suggested that this liberation coincides with women moving from a submissive role to an active role. You then further suggested that this active role is tied to pathology. The “some good and some not so good” weaseling you do a sentence earlier doesn’t exactly cover up that you’re trying to sell old school obedience as modern liberation.

Now you can dance around it all you’d like, but the bottom line of your argument is that you’re selling “Liberation that only biblical sexual wholeness can provide you.” You’re using the language of addiction in an attempt to lie. You’re selling religion but dressing it up as medicine. Thats dishonest. I’d also argue that it shows you’ve little faith that the bill of goods you’re shopping around is going to be picked up unless you can convince people that theres something wrong with them and the old language of sin just ain’t working. Its a crude bait and switch.

Porn, masturbation, etc. are secondary to the care I have for these women and their emotional health.

I’m going to have to ask you to cite your sources Crystal, because I’m unclear about the connection between porn, masturbation, and emotional health. I see a lot of Christians talking about it and writing scrips for pray and Jesus, but in the credentialed community the consensus seems to be that most people get themselves off on a pretty regular basis and it isn’t a problem unless is reaches the level of compulsion. Once a day? Not even closes. I’m talking about tissue breakdown, blisters, and losing your job because you just can’t peel yourself away from the screen. It happens, but it isn’t even close to an epidemic.

Which brings me to my next question: training?

Crystal is certified in Sexual Addiction Counseling through the Association of Christian Counselors and is currently working on her degree in Christian Counseling.

That sounds very impressive and all, but I couldn’t help but notice the lack of graduate training or licensure at any level. But hey, theres lots of stuff I don’t know so I decided to find out about these interesting programs. This is when things got weird.

First I plugged “association of Christian Counselors” into google and failed to find an exact hit. Theres a few options. One is the “American Association of Christian Counselors” (if this where you trained…bad form for misquoting the name of your training institution, btw). One is the “National Christian Counselors Association.” One is the “Christian Counselors Association” but they’re in the UK.

The American Christian Counseling Association does have a certificate program in “Treating Sexual Addiciton.” From the materials available on their website its a $249.00 retail value that you can get now for the low, low price of $189.00. There is also a suspicious lack of information regarding accreditation across the site beyond the information that some of their courses count for continuing education credits.

I must admit this paucity of information and credentials troubles me. How can you ethically offer care for people’s emotional health when you’re working on a degree of unspecified level, have no license, and have a certification that appears to require little more than writing a check?

What you’re doing is ministry, not health care. Shame on you for dressing the former up as the latter.

  18. There’s really only one instrument I’ve dedicated myself to strumming and unfortunately it’s not for public display, but I’ll definitely be a groupie.

As someone who grew up around musicians and works with a band today, I’ll let you in on a little secret: all performance is public masturbation. The only difference between a wanker and a lead guitarist is that the lead guitarist does it on stage.

  19. I intensely dislike and disagree with the idea that women should be sexually submissive and not sexually aggressive. Women are free to have whatever sexuality they wish or they have. This does not mean they are entitled to have it with whatever partner they want, but if a partner does not want an aggressive female partner, that is incompatability, not a failing on either of their parts.

  20. From Roe v. Wade to lesbianism to birth control, women’s liberation movements have made it their platform to give women a right over their own bodies

Women having rights to their own bodies? What kind of fucking heresy is that?

    Signed,

    -Some Bronze-Age Bastard.

William, thanks for undergoing the torture of reading her vile propaganda so that nobody else has to. The whole thing smacks of “WHAT ABOUT TEH MENZ?”

  21. I was going to research the content on their website so I could provide a valid critique but I got distracted after Googling “dirty girls”.

  22. Honestly, don’t swoon, get fucking angry. Someone has to stand up to these half bright carnie barkers selling old time repression and dressing it up as health care. People like Crystal Renaud and her shady counseling associations are the Crisis Pregnancy Centers of the psychological world. Its a straight up deceitful attempt to sell (and oh do they ever bill for their services) people a cure for a disease they themselves make. “You shouldn’t have to feel like a disgusting addict on the verge of being a rapist/unlovable/ruined for your husband/sent to eternal damnation for jerking off/being gay/watching other people fuck. Its a sickness, I’ll cure you for a nominal fee…” The worst part about it though is that when it fails, and it always does, it leaves people suspicious of the very care providers who could help them with the suicidal levels of shame these kinds of “treatments” substitute for insight or human development. Not only do people like this not provide the care they promise, they actively damage the human beings they treat. That the likes of Ms. Renaud hide behind words like “counseling” and the pavise of religious freedom does not mean that we shouldn’t challenge her, point out that she isn’t actually a care provider but a revival tent preacher, and refuse to allow her the privilege of polite discourse.

At best she’s a dangerously underqualified and diagnosing people with phantom illnesses informed only by her religious sentiments. At worst she’s a dangerous con. Either way someone is going to die because of her mistreatment. Just because she isn’t necessarily Reverend Harry Powell doesn’t mean she isn’t doing damage.

  23. There is but one answer: Moar Pron!

If we use enough of it, it should keep folks like Krystal away, like holy water against vampires.

  24. You poop more than twice a week, is there a twelve-step program for that?

    LOL <3 this.

But, but,but WOMEN AREN'T SUPPOSED TO EAT!!!!!!

They'll get Teh Fatz! And then no man will want to put babies in her tummy! So, she'll become a sex addict!

or something. i can't follow the "logic" here.

  25. @Crystal Renaud

    Crystal Renaud: Crystal Renaud

See, nowhere on your site do you give a definition of what you consider to be a compulsion or what qualifies you to make that call. You are pedalling the same worn out bullshit that paints all sexuality as a dirty, disgraceful thing and I am frankly amazed that you bothered to come on here and try to say anything to the contrary when your entire site makes you message very clear.

  26. 1. William, you are king of everything. I am swooning… in anger!

    2. Kristen J, pretty sure you just became a dirty girl again for crushing on William. Shaaaaaaaaaame!

    3. Jill, when I win the lottery (the money kind, not the Shirley Jackson kind *shudder*) I will give you monies just for managing to use that cat picture again.

    1. 3. Jill, when I win the lottery (the money kind, not the Shirley Jackson kind *shudder*) I will give you monies just for managing to use that cat picture again.

Oh I plan on making Stern Skeptical Pussy a regular part of the Feministe line-up.

  27. does the number of times you masturbate per day mean how many orgasms you have? or does it mean, like, separate instances of masturbation? because i once had nine orgasms in one, um, session. but does that count as one time? or nine times? I NEED TO KNOW FOR SCIENCE.

  28. Also, I will just generally throw my hat in the “crush on William” ring, and add a crush on Kyra for the explanation of Transformers gender performance. (And, also, the statement “any social community can have gender”.)

And, of course, I am still happy to see the return of Stern and Hairless Kitty.

  29. does the number of times you masturbate per day mean how many orgasms you have? or does it mean, like, separate instances of masturbation? because i once had nine orgasms in one, um, session. but does that count as one time? or nine times? I NEED TO KNOW FOR SCIENCE.

That’s exactly what I was wondering. Perhaps Crystal will illuminate us.

  30. I just clicked over the the DGM blog and read some stories of women who used the program.

They are women with normal sexual urges who are ashamed of them and want them to go away. One woman described looking at porn and masterbating from childhood onward, and only kicking the habit to please god. Her childhood sounds a lot like mine was, only I was only a little bit ashamed, and that shame diminished over time as I learned to embrace my sexuality.

Here’s a question for Crystal: what would happen if these women continued to masturbate? Would something bad occur?

    (Hairy palms, for instance?)

  31. I don’t know why y’all are hating, all of you are going to be using DGM to get over your addiction to the new PETA site.

  32. Masturbating and/or reading erotica twice a week or less is an out of control compulsion that needs treatment before it ruins your life?

Wow. That may be the most ridiculous thing anyone has ever said on the internet (this week). Congratulations, you win the hyperbole prize.

…And then I got to the bit about restoring women to their naturally submissive state. And I laughed and laughed…

  33. As I am reading this through a blazing headache, I have little to say other than: “…and if I have a problem … it’s that I need a new vibrator because the cap that holds the batteries in is broken” is the response to this article humanly possible. Really. Go, Kyra, go! ::high fives:: High fives for a bunch of other things you said too. And William, thank you for breaking it all down perfectly. Awesomesauce.

Also, I NEED THAT CAT. Wherever it is. I want to have it perch on my shoulder while I teach. Should make my lectures 5X more excellent.

  34. If romance novels count as porn, then I’m in big trouble. I’m a feminist literary critic working on a PhD about romance novels, and I’m currently reading four or five… a day. I wonder if it’s technically an addiction that needs curing if it’s basically your job…? I need to know to, live, save my soul and stuff. Obviously.

  35. Scrumby: Are you going to use that dirty little plot bunny or may I have it? Also, are you single? I have a raging internet crush on you due to the Asimov reference. Although if William has those books lounging around on his bookshelf, it may be a tough choice.

  36. scrumby: Which somehow leads me to R. Daneel Olivaw giving a lecture on “The Laws of Robotic Sexy Times” right before he cranks up the fuck saw…

I think he might be the wrong one. Maybe the victim from… I think it was “The Naked Sun” or (spoiler!) Dors?

  37. I wonder if it’s technically an addiction that needs curing if it’s basically your job…?

Well, obviously, if it’s your job, you’re a dirty whore! See, getting paid for sex makes it extra wrong.

  38. Well, obviously, if it’s your job, you’re a dirty whore! See, getting paid for sex makes it extra wrong.

Because then not only is it not for procreation but for MONEY. Which is evil. Unless its in a collection plate. Or collected for a “ministry.” Hell, if you want to be extra holy not only must you stop fapping all the damned time like a filthy animal but you can get rid of all that filthy, sinful, corrupt lucre to a tax exempt religious organization of your choice. Honestly its not even for the church, its just to keep you from spending the money on porno and pants with heavy duty zippers to withstand the force of you desperately tearing them open to masturbate, thus ruining you for potential marriage.

    Or something.

  39. She’s got a new blog post up about how some meanies on the internet are making fun of her and how it’s ok because God loves her, or something. I left her a message but I’m sure she’ll delete it.

  40. Bushfire: She’s got a new blog post up about how some meanies on the internet are making fun of her

And from it I learned that commenting on a post is the same is hacking! I’m up in Feministe’s business hacking the shit out of it. RIGHT NOW! mwahahaha

  41. She’s got a new blog post up about how some meanies on the internet are making fun of her and how it’s ok because God loves her, or something. I left her a message but I’m sure she’ll delete it.

Back to the echo chamber. Boo hoo, people are calling her out on lacking credentials and breaking the 8th commandment. Tough shit.

  42. The fact that the recovery group for women is called “No Stones” is kind of cracking me up right now. What would the one for men be called?
Masturbating “almost daily” – that’s not obsession. That’s a sleeping-pill level of masturbation at best. Back when I was a teenager, that would have been a really slow week.

  43. William: Boo hoo, people are calling her out on lacking credentials and breaking the 8th commandment.

No stealing? Or No False Witnessing?

  44. Hey, Jill. I’m all too familiar with these people. Not this organization specifically, but the anti-masturbation people. My parents were the same. They always shamed me. They made me see a therapist (cough* church counselor), and “pray”.

I’m not a girl, either, I’m a man. I never got into trouble as a kid, but I was frequently grounded. Why? Because I masturbated and looked at porn. For a while I felt ashamed of myself when I did it, as if I had done something wrong. It’s very common in Evangelical Christian circles. I’m glad to be free of these ridiculous notions, and I’m happier than ever to experience my sexuality and masturbate without guilt. As you said, if masturbating daily is a problem, perhaps I should be checked in 😉

  45. Bushfire:
She’s got a new blog post up about how some meanies on the internet are making fun of her and how it’s ok because God loves her, or something.I left her a message but I’m sure she’ll delete it.

You need to learn to read “ministry based” blogs a little better. With that blog post she has proclaimed herself a martyr. Of course. It’s the Godwin’s law of the religious: “I’m being persecuted for my beliefs!!” You could have set your watch by that one.

  46. You need to learn to read “ministry based” blogs a little better.

    Goddess, no! One was enough!

    Crystal,

    Two things:

    1) I really admire your courage in defending your ideas in a forum where most(many) of us vehemently disagree with them.
    2) Having said that, you’re talking crap.

  48. 1) I really admire your courage in defending your ideas in a forum where most(many) of us vehemently disagree with them.

Does it really count as defending one’s ideas if you show up to make a single comment, don’t respond to anyone else, and then moderate away any attempts to engage on your own blog that are less than sycophantic?
