Hard Donation Items

I have some old toys of Ethan’s sitting around that I was planning on selling this weekend, in addition to clothes that probably can’t be sold to a consignment store. I emailed the Houston Bar Association, one organization that is accepting hard items for the new American diaspora, with offers to send kids clothing and toys. This is the shipping address they gave me.

I’m going to have Ethan join me tonight in arranging the packages and use this as a particularly teachable moment.

  1. Thanks for the tip. I’ve got a bunch of baby clothes and toys my daughter has outgrown. I’d been wondering what to do with them. Maybe they can clothe some New Orleans refugee toddlers.

  2. Did they say specifically what they were looking for? I don’t want to send stuff that they’re just going to have to sort through and throw out.

  3. Thanks so much for the promo. I’m visiting in Houston for a couple of weeks, and the bar association is doing a wonderful job organizing relief efforts. I’m trying to spend some time volunteering with them over the next week. I know they need clothes, toys, blankets, diapers, stuff like that.

  4. Like others have said, thanks for the tip. I grew up near NO, and lived in Houston until 1998…so in some ways, this feels even more personal.

I’m glad to have somewhere I can send the clothing my 11-month daughter has outgrown.

  5. Meanwhile, my mother—the conservative Christian and hardlining Republican— is bitterly angry about having to pay for all the reconstruction. The irony is palpable, folks.

  6. Sally, check the website–it’s kind of an ongoing thing.

They are also setting up legal advice booths and hope to have some at the Astrodome by Tuesday.

  7. Thanks Lauren. I have a bunch of my clothes, actually, that I could send over there. I can stop by the store tomorrow to pick up some toiletries and add them to the package!

  8. If any of you are donating shoes (and if anyone is accepting them), make sure you tie pairs of shoes together. There’s nothing like sorting through donations of clothes and finding one odd shoe after another – including some which people could really have used if they had stayed with their mates.

  9. Dammit! I read your comment too late, Lynn. I gave away four pairs of shoes and didn’t tie them together. 🙁

Lauren, pay attention to the weight of the packages; I packed up three big boxes of stuff, and it cost me over $50.00 to send them. The value of the stuff was more than $50.00, though, so it was worth it, but still.

  10. thanks for the info- I just sent a box of baby girls clothes off to Houston-
I am in Seattle- I wish I could do more…..
