Trying to Be Strong

I saw the first moving footage of the aftermath tonight. I had imagined a horrible image of what it must look like.

The reality is worse.

I am so goddamned infuriated at our government, among the richest countries in the world, being unable, unwilling, or fearful to help our own refugees in a timely and responsible manner.

Look at these children.

“The first bus that arrived at the Astrodome was primarily made up of child travelers. Children taking care of children. This girl looked like she was trying to have the strength of an adult, but she’s not an adult. Her eyes tell the story.”

  1. Tonight I think I hit my saturation point. I was watching footage of starving children and dead bodies and I just couldn’t take it any longer I had to turn the tv off. I am saddened beyond words, horrified, appalled, frightened, pissed off, and any number of other things!

Obviously it is not your government then. If it were your government, if it was the government of the (majority poor, black) folks of New Orleans, it would listen to you and to them.

And there you go. Thanks for the reminder.

  4. I’d like to offer to take in some of the homeless/orphaned children. I’m a long way from NO (or Texas, for that matter) but I have room for a couple of kids and they could go to school here and be fed and cared for until things were more stable. I can’t find anyone organizing such a relief (akin to MoveOn’s housing site). Does anyone have any info on this?

I am cross-posting this to lots of blogs. I think I can be forgiven this time.
