  1. I seem to recall mention that someone in the Obama household is allergic to dogs so they had to find a special breed that said person is not allergic to, hence mutts not being an option.

  2. Yes, one of the girls is allergic. There is no hypoallergenic dog breed, however. The claim is made for certain dogs (poodles, etc) because they are low-shed, but there’s no such thing as a danderless dog. I would love to have seen the Obamas do their homework and rescue a shelter dog.

Most of us who love pets and have allergies find a way to deal.

  3. Really, I’m not okay with this. Malia and Sasha should really comb the streets of DC until they find the perfect dog in an alley, then engage in a dog-calling contest with a depression-era street cop for the right to take the dog home.

Yes it’s true that most can, but there are exceptions. My son has allergies and asthma. After trying for several years to deal with his allergies (He would get sinus infections, which would trigger his asthma, causing him to have to be on prednisone) we were told in no uncertain terms that the choice was to rehome the dog or risk serious bone damage to our son. It would be heartbreaking for the Obamas (and the dog) to get a dog and end up having to rehome it.

  5. Read the article people, the Obamas are getting a dog from a shelter.

Mrs. Obama says the family is looking for a rescue Portuguese water dog who is “old enough” and a “match” for the family dynamic.

    Bold by me.
