“Net Nanny” bars Feministing

No joke… I just tried to go to one of my favorite blogs, Feministing, only to get a message in Italian telling me that the “net nanny” on this computer — which, notably, is a public internet point in an Italian postal service building — is barring me from visiting the site, which may contain “innapropriate” content. Huh. But dont worry, Feministe is apparently appropriate enough for me to visit.

UPDATE: Amp is barred, too.

UPDATE 2: I spoke (wrote) too soon. The Feministe archives are also blocked.

  2. I worked in an office where the advocate was blocked – sometimes the word sex is enough to block a site.

    bizarre that an italian nanny is configured to block english sites though…

  3. An old journalism instructor of mine used to say that if what you were writing didn’t make someone angry, you weren’t doing your job.

    It’s possible he was talking about slanting news to one side and in so doing, inciting anger, but I assume he was referring to editorials and what-have-you.

  4. I’m reading at work, and Feministing is blocked here as well. The network filter puts the site into the ‘Pornography’ category.

  5. Yeah, that happened to me all the time when I was in Europe and tried accessing a blog that occasionally used words like “porn” or “fuck”. Leaving me quite annoyed, as you can well imagine.

    But I have a long history of strife with Net Nanny. Back in highschool, I was writing movie reviews for my student paper. When I tried to write a review for Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, I wanted to refer to one of the characters as a “porn king”, but net nanny even censored words written in Word, so I had to call him a “porno king” which Net Nanny was fine with.

I once tried to write a review of Erica Jong’s Fear of Flying on Amazon using a phrase that said something like “some people have even disparaged it as porn”– which I wasn’t doing– but it kept deleting the line about porn. It was bizarre. And a bit scary. Then, long ago and far away, I tried to use my cat’s name as my AOL screen name (I know… it was long ago….) It wouldn’t let me use the word Tituba. I assume because it starts with Tit. Or it had something against The Crucible.

  7. it’s not fuck, shit, or anything like that. it’s feminist. that is on the filter list. this is why net filtering is just … wrong.
