Educe Me – Feministe

My long-time friend, Anne, has started a blog relating to her studies in education. She spent all of last week observing in a high-poverty, inner-city school in Indianapolis. Many of her experiences there are incredibly interesting as an an outsider. All of my observation experiences have been in suburban secondary classrooms with comparatively lesser problems regarding poverty, attitude, and preparation as a whole, so this is particularly educational for me.

And speaking as someone married to a veteran inner-city teacher… boy, does it ring true. The school at which Anne did her observation sounds both less well-organized and better funded than the one in Oakland in which my wife has worked for almost ten years.

That apathy is a problem: it’s a defensive reaction for many. Who indeed would take a job like that unless they’re wholeheartedly committed? and then a few years of insufficient funding, 14-hour days six or seven days a week, parents who refuse to take any responsibility for the kids’ education, politicians who say the teachers’ “greed” is one of the biggest problems facing society, and knee-jerk conservatives who vote to cut funding further then blame teachers when education declines, using that as an excuse for more cuts… you kind of have to develop the apathy as a defense against crippling depression. And yet they stay at work.

Anne is a hero for even considering the career.
