HR Blog Has Arrived

I’m sure you know that the Huffington Report blog is in action, and is already an enjoyable read.

But today, the Huffington Report has arrived. How do I know? Richard Bradley writes:

Where Are the Women?

No, this isn’t a plea for a date.

I was merely scrolling down the page reading people’s posts when I noticed a certain gender imbalance. (I just wrote a book about Larry Summers, so the issue’s on my mind.)

25 posts as of this writing. 22 men, 3 women.

What’s up with that? Anyone?

Oh, honey. I’m not dipping a toe into this one.

On Linking and Blogrolls

I’m no longer including a link list on the blog. Having thought about the points that Shelley made about blogrolls and linking practices, I decided that not only was my blogroll becoming too lengthy to be of use on the blog (and terribly difficult to load on my dial-up connection), but that those that I link will be statistically better off with my regular roundup posts.

A link to my public bloglines account is now included in the menu bar, but I’m getting rid of the blogrolls for good. Please read Shelley’s post for greater insight into the issue.

If anyone believes that they have written or have found a post that deserves greater coverage, please do not hesitate to send it to me via email. Though I cannot guarantee that I will write on it, I almost always send these stories to someone who will.

Somebody Convince Me Not To Drop Out

Welcome to the obligatory end of semester procrastination post. Why, if it weren’t for this blog, I might be doing something else. Like writing the four papers due on Thursday.

Tonight’s goals:

  • Finish two 3 page papers. Email both to prof.
  • Have thesis and opening statements for 3rd paper.
  • Not get sidetracked by laundry, cat, or blogs.
  • Don’t drink too much caffeine.
  • Plan 4th paper; try to find corresponding sources.

Yo, Lauren, good luck on this. Excellent. I’m already blogging about not blogging.

Poets: A Request

I’m working on my unit plan on poetry and have run into a writing wall. I’m drawing blanks on post-Reconstruction American poets and need some examples of poets who are usable in a public high school. Not to mention compelling enough to use in a high school.

Funny that I can come up with tons for the blog, but not for school. Wonderful.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. The sooner the better.

Under Attack

At some point this evening, this blog was attacked by a dinosaur.

Everything is now under control. Thank you for your concern.

Projects, Illness, Etc.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Open Blog Wednesday! We had some awesome posts here, and if I get some time, will highlight them individually.

I’ve been busy completing a Super Top Secret Web Project that will be all of cool, awesome, and funny, in addition to taking care of E who has been sick with an unidentifiable fever for the last 2-3 weeks. Since no one can decide what is going on, I have officially diagnosed it as either hay fever or ebola.

In the meantime, I’m still seeking submissions for the project I outlined yesterday. Other topics I’m thinking of having people cover are how to start and maintain a container garden, ways to find cheap everythings, and technological innovations that help us circumvent or cut down on monthly bills. I’ve had a few takers already and am trying to figure out how we’ll do this in an egalitarian manner.

As soon as this and a few other projects are done, I will be back to my regular blogging schedule.

Google Bombing and the “Culture of Life”

Hi! I’m Aldahlia.

Ms. Lauren’s recent “Culture of Life” series of posts, got me to thinking about a little thing known as “Google Bombing.”

Essentially, it’s manipulating enough links to affect Google’s page-ranking system. Like, what (mostly) bloggers have done with “miserable failure.”

What I’m proposing, is indeed… a link-based high-jacking of the question “where are the women bloggers.”

All it will take is enough folks creating a post that looks something like this:

where are the women bloggers
where are the women bloggers
where are the women bloggers
where are the women bloggers

Of course, you can add similar links to just about any female blogger (preferably political bloggers) you want to, including this place. The point is for someone to punch the phrase into google and get some women bloggers, instead of getting some moron bemoaning the (theoretical) absence of women that blog, or some singular entry by a frustrated woman trying to assert her visibility, our visibility, on her own.

Book Review: The Art of Raising a Puppy

I know that Lauren blogs every Friday about her cat, so I thought I would share what I think is a wonderful book on caring for your puppy. The authors of this book shocked me at first, as they are monks from upstate New York! Their approach to raising a puppy uses a lot of positive reinforcement; however, they also realize that some discipline is needed in order to ensure normal development. This book breaks down each stage of the puppies first two years and walks you through their world from not our only viewpoint as owners, but also through the eyes of the puppies themselves. Each chapter relates back to you a puppy from the litter that you follow throughout the whole book. It makes me feel that they belong to me after completely reading this book. It covers the basics of selecting a breed and breeder as well. If you want to learn more about me and my puppies (I have lots of pictures), you can find me at my blog, Jason A Myers.

Tangled Bank and Stuff

Tangled BankTangled Bank #24 is up and I am a part of it. Who knew that I could write on science?

This week’s host is Syaffolee, a blog with a rather interesting creature featured as a background image. Do I want to eat it, hug it, or step on it? This is to be seen.

Don’t forget — today is

Open Blog

Another exercise in trust. Don’t forget to plug your blog, and if you don’t have one, leave an email address. If you lurk here and never comment, this is a way to out yourself in style! Don’t be intimidated by WordPress — it is incredibly easy to use.

Prove me right: I can trust the universe (to take up for me when I don’t feel like writing).
