The Hottest Heads of State

A few thoughts:

1. Sorry, Belarus, but you don’t deserve to be that high up on the list. I’d say same goes for Putin, but he’s wearing that awesome tank-top, so, even.
2. Xanana Gusmao, where have you been all my life?
3. Mohammed VI was robbed.

Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Nice work, O!

There are, of course, some skeptics on the right and on the left (and guess who I think has a bit more of a point). Yglesias rightly points out that Obama has a lot left to accomplish when it comes to promoting peace — brokering an Israel/Palestine peace deal, normalizing relations with Cuba and promoting international climate agreement. And PZ Meyers adds that Obama hasn’t done away with some of the worst leftovers from the Bush years.

On the right, they’re crying “affirmative action” — because, you know, all the qualified people on the entire planet are white. They’re also “stunned,” and suspect this may be the Nobel committee’s way of criticizing George W. Bush. But hey, at least they’re on the same page as the Taliban — how’s that for international diplomacy?

I’m not sure it’s a criticism of the Bush years as much as a reaction to the fact that George W. Bush destroyed our international reputation and earned us more than a few enemies. Obama has a lot to repair, and has made responsible statesmanship central to his presidency. That’s a good thing.

We absolutely should push Obama to do better — and he has a lot to improve — but the attacks on him for being awarded such a prestigious prize are disturbing. We have a sitting president who won a Nobel Peace Prize. That was unthinkable a year ago. I realize that a lot of people on the right are sore losers, but this is getting ridiculous. The Nobel conversations are already sounding like the flipside of the conservative reaction when Chicago didn’t get the Olympics — there, conservatives were giddy that America had lost something just because Obama wanted it; here, conservatives are devastated that an American leader won something, just because Obama is that leader.

I was in the Chicago area (in the suburbs, not the city) when the news of the Olympic rejection broke, and it was disconcerting to see that right so celebratory when most Chicago residents looked like this:

Chicago

Admittedly hilarious photos aside, right-wingers were just bad sports about the whole thing. It’s disappointing, but not surprising, to see them being jerks about Obama’s Nobel prize win.

To be clear, there are lots of reasons to criticize Obama winning the Nobel while Guantanamo is still open and the U.S. still tortures people. But “OMG he’s black and liberal and therefore obvs not qualified!!!” is not one of them.

2008 Weblog Awards

Note: This post has been moved up so that you don’t forget to vote (every 24 hours).  Some new blogs have been listed, and most of the ones we’ve highlighted here are lagging behind in the vote — and I know that if the Feministe community pulls together with a few minutes of their time, we can give them a huge boost!

The 2008 Weblog Awards are upon us, and are the biggest blog competition currently in existence.

A lot of excellent feminist blogs have made the cut this year.  Below is a list of the feminist/feminist-minded bloggers who are finalists.  As Lauredhel (writer for nominated blog Hoyden About Town) said in an email to me, it makes sense to make a concentrated effort to ensure that feminist blogs are represented among this year’s winners — particularly considering that there are several misogynistic/MRA blogs on the finalist list.

Voting opened today.  Click here to vote. (Or click on each category header below.) You can vote in each category once very 24 hours — and can therefore vote for more than one blog in each category, if you so choose.  Voting closes at Polls close Monday January 13, 2009 at 10:00 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), or 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST).  All of the other rules are here.

The feminist blog nominees are below.* The header links take you to the voting pages for each category; the blog links take you to the blogs themselves.

Again, click here to vote!

*In addition to using a somewhat flexible definiton of “feminist blog” to include those that are not necessarily and entirely about feminism but also those that are written by feminists and/or espouse many feminist ideas, I hope it goes without saying that in making this list, it does not mean an endorsement of every word ever written on each of these blogs either by myself or Feministe.

The Aussies have it right

They give out awards for incredible acts of sexism.

An Australian outback mayor’s plea for lovelorn female “ugly ducklings” to move to a remote mining town to reverse a shortage of eligible women has won him the country’s yearly award for outrageous sexism.

Mount Isa Mayor John Malony infuriated women in August with a suggestion that “with five blokes to every girl, may I suggest that beauty-disadvantaged women should proceed to Mount Isa,” in northwest Queensland state.

Malony earned his top golden Ernie award with a defense that “The protesters are blaming me for their looks.”

Runners up include a policitician who was accused of sniffing a female staffer’s chair and snapping a bra strap; a TV network that sacked a reporter when she became pregnant and then said that female reporters need to be sexy to succeed; and a female politician who taunted female Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard for being childless.

The Ernies also honor good, pro-feminist acts:

Rugby Union international Brendan Cannon won the yearly Good Ernie “for boys behaving better” after saying: “I don’t want my daughter Phoebe growing up in the country where almost all women will be victims of physical violence or sexual abuse during their lifetimes.”

I think they’ve got the right idea. Plus, hey, awards are fun.

Who would you (dis)honor with an award for outrageous sexism? Who would you honor for promoting a feminist message in an unexpected place?

The long-awaited 2007 Femmostroppo Awards have been announced!

Head on over to read some really great feminist writing.

The Femmostroppo Awards honor (what this group of judges deems to be) the best 40 feminist or womanist blog posts of the year. Congratulations to everyone who made it in. I’m happy to see several of the posts that I personally nominated, and so many bloggers whose work I regularly read.

I’m also happy/proud to see so many Feministe writers and alumni. Special congrats to Jill, Zuzu, Jack, La Lubu* and Nanette* . . . and thank you to the judges for including me.

Give yourselves a pat on the back, everyone — and then get back to work!

Teen Wins State Track Title — By Herself

Bonnie Richardson was the only athlete from her high school to go to the state track competition — and she won the team title, alone.

Richardson’s title march began with field events on Friday when she won the high jump (5 feet, 5 inches), placed second in the long jump (18-7) and was third in the discus (121-0).

On Saturday, she won the 200 meters in 25.03 seconds and nearly pulled off a huge upset in the 100 before finishing second (12.19) to defending champion Kendra Coleman of Santa Anna. Richardson, a junior, earned a total of 42 team points to edge team runner-up Chilton (36).

Pretty awesome.

Thanks to Veronica for the link.
