Teen Wins State Track Title — By Herself

Bonnie Richardson was the only athlete from her high school to go to the state track competition — and she won the team title, alone.

Richardson’s title march began with field events on Friday when she won the high jump (5 feet, 5 inches), placed second in the long jump (18-7) and was third in the discus (121-0).

On Saturday, she won the 200 meters in 25.03 seconds and nearly pulled off a huge upset in the 100 before finishing second (12.19) to defending champion Kendra Coleman of Santa Anna. Richardson, a junior, earned a total of 42 team points to edge team runner-up Chilton (36).

Pretty awesome.

  1. Sounds like she’s got a future in decathlons. (Or do girls/women compete in pentathlons?–not sure)

  2. Women traditionally do the Heptathlon. That was Jackie Joyner-Kersee’s big event.

  3. I had to read this a few times to understand (I didn’t know what a team title was): the idea is that she was the only person from her high school to go to the state championship, and prizes are awarded there to groups of people from the same high school for a group effort, and she won one of these prizes on her own, right? That’s pretty amazing.

  4. Bitter Scribe, I’d say she’s probably currently somewhere between 5000 and 6000 in Heptathlon points, depending on how good she is at sports like shot put, javelin and 800 m.
Here’s the result list from the World Junior Championships, for reference:

5500 would be really good, in other words.
No Carolina Klüft, but then again, no one is 🙂

  5. Yeah, substitute the shot put for the discus, throw in an 800 meters and 110 hurdles and she’s just about set. I’ve got a niece who would be good for the heptatholan but she’s a bit concerned about the 800.

  6. yeah, she’d only need to run like, the 800m for a heptathlon. Bonnie’s wicked awesome!!! She makes me want to revisit my track and field days 😛
