Pablo Eduardo Maximo Sanchez Jr. and His New Friend, Doug

For Mother’s Day I was made a mother all over again. I went to the pet store to replace Frank and Beans who, much to Ethan’s dismay, disappeared from the pond without a trace, and ended up leaving with this little fellow as well.

Meet Doug.

Doug is a six-month-old orange and buff pseudo-kitten that may have been a totally bad idea, funds and patience allowing, but has added quite a bit of spice to the Feministe household. He was found abandoned in Northern Indiana and rescued by the regional no-kill shelter. He was adopted for pennies.

Pablo hasn’t decided what to think about him yet, acting far more the Alpha than I ever expected. He watches Doug from afar, hissing when Doug infringes on his infallible bubble of personal space. Doug, however, has a significant advantage over Pablo. While Pablo has at least ten pounds on the kitty, Doug has his claws. Pablo was front declawed when I got him, unfortunately, and this fact may be the bane of his existence while Doug gets acclimated to the house.

The last twenty-four hours have consisted of significant amounts of lovin’ given to both kitties. And Doug’s name, for the record, still cracks me up.

  1. If you can get him to do tricks by saying “Six minutes.. six minutes.. six minutes, Doug E. Fresh, you’re on!” then you might have one of those videotapes that can win you $10,000 from Bob Saget’s replacement.

  2. Doug seems like a perfect name– I see Doug as kind of a surfer dude and the picture of the kitten somehow fits that idea for me. Fun-lovin’, cute, with great abs and blond flyaway hair. “Hey dude, let’s catch this wave” “man that was really bogus”– while Pablo bristles and re-reads his Fiere and grumbles about the unenlightened masses. 🙂

  3. Kim, it’s because “Frieriste” looks similar to “feministe.” Actually the one discovery I’ve made about Pablo is what a grump he is. I guess I always ignored it considering the grump I am. Doug is already throwing us off-kilter. 😉

  4. Sometimes the one that throws us off kilter is the best gift. Cats are great for that. This morning, lazily contemplating NOT getting out of bed, my (12 year old) cat turned kitten and attacked my hand with “bunny feet” and teeth. She was feeling a bit feisty, and it was a surprise. It woke me up enough to get out of bed & spend the morning with my hubby– who I had totally forgotten was leaving for a week this afternoon. So now, instead of feeling guilty about not spending breakfast with him on his last morning here for a while, I got to be up and companionable with him. Thanks to the fiesty kitty. She’s somehow a good combo of the “angel/devil” on my shoulder– but a bit of both. 🙂

  5. Lauren: Do men tend to pick female cats and women males?

When we introduced our kittens two years ago, it was interesting how each of them sought to adapt to the presence of an older, established cat. Fiona kept trying to see just how close she could get to Virginia Mew while Boadicea just stood at distance hissing.

In the long run, though a larger Fiona tries to press her dominance, she and Virginia get on pretty well. They will even share the bed together. When Boadicea gets too close to Virginia, on the other hand, Ms. Mew hisses.

  6. Joel, I have no idea. It was between Doug and another cat at the shelter, but she was obviously ill. Kennel cold or something, and there was no way I could take on another ill-ish cat.

  7. As soon as Pablo realizes that Doug is having more fun with Ethan than he is, he’ll quit sulking and start interacting more. I think if my Maine Coon had his way, he’d be inviting every other cat in the neighborhood over for dinner and long discussions while lying in the window sill. My Siamese, on the other hand, threatens to eat any cat within eyesight.

  8. Cats love to hiss and sulk when there’s a new one around. I’ve had to put up with that more times than I’d like to recall. Nothing better than a new kitty, though.
