Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday October 19, 2008 Jill Self-promote away. Rules reminder: Post a link and a short description of a post (or multiple posts) you’ve written this week. Don’t just link to your whole blog.
My ongoing series taking a look at who might be to blame for the results in the Canadian election last Tuesday: Part 1: Stéphane Dion, leader of the Liberal Party. Part 1a: Stéphane Dion to resign as Liberal Party leader. Part 2: Stephen Harper, Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party. Obviously this series will continue. Canada just wasted hundreds of millions of dollars on this election and nobody achieved their goals. How and why did that happen, and who’s responsible?
I blogged about another piece of rape culture. http://mzbitca.wordpress.com/2008/10/18/ummm-im-pretty-sure-this-is-rape/ I also discovered another reason why I love Tina Fey http://mzbitca.wordpress.com/2008/10/16/the-subtleness-of-tina-fey/
At Female Impersonator this week: Kate and Amelia dealt with a harassing caller on their radio show, Amelia wrote about the slut-shaming inherent in the German word for virgin and I wrote about the first translation of Virgil’s Aeneid done by a woman. Also, what will you do when the fear and threat of sexualized violence is gone?
I responded to the “iProtectMarriage” list of “facts” against Prop8 with They’re trying to “protect marriage” with this dreck? (I am particularly pleased with expanding on their claim that a “black administrator” was fired “for objecting to the comparison of black discrimination to same-sex marriage”: in summary, no. An assistant vice president of human resources was fired for making clear in public that she was opposed on principle to her employer’s human resources policies, and for upholding her opposition in private at a hearing to investigate the article she’d had published.) I also asked How can you elect a President when the electoral system is broken? – which is still the most disturbing thing for me about this election – no matter how widespread the support for Obama, you know the Republicans won’t have changed their game. And, on a less serious note, I’m pleased by my recipe for apple pie, in which I also get to enthuse about pi and phi.
Celebrity chef, Alton Brown engages in fat hate. Apparently fat people or the cause of unsustainablity. They are also repulsive according to the celebrity foodie. A 15 Year old girl is arrested for taking nude photos of herself. Apparently it is possible to exploit yourself. Using Proposition 8 to teach children to hate: Homophobia and how it is passed generation to generation. Proposition 4: A break down of why parental notification in the case of teenage abortion is wrong.
Some thoughts on male writing privilege This is based on some discussions of one man telling dozens of women they were stupid. Abortion, Health Care and my personal Joe the Plumber Being mostly a bunch of stuff I’ve been thinking about. And October is ongoing excerpt month, mostly from paranormals, at The Den of Debauchery’s Garden Gazebo. We’ve had a couple of sexy devils and some blind vampires. Werewolves, zombies, nagas and more are forthcoming.
I blogged about South Dakota’s Measure 11 as part of my Spotlight on Ballot Initiatives for the election season. I talked about my experience canvassing in South Dakota and some reasons even pro-lifers should be opposed to this measure.
I just launched a new sex/gender/whatever I want blog, so I wrote about my instinct to laugh at the Sarah Palin sex doll rather than rant about its inherent sexism. I couldn’t quite pin down my reasons, but hey, I tried.
I had a little fun with Jesse Jackson’s jealousy of Barack Obama and how it plays into the right wing’s attempt to scare Jewish people (especially little old ones) to vote for McCain and how the McCain camp blamed Barack Obama for the the fact that Joe Sam the non-plumber doesn’t really hold up to scrutiny to help the McCain platform. Oh yeah, and since Sarah Palin can see Russia from her house, I guess she’ll be able to tell us when all hell breaks loose in South Ossetia.
This week on MMW, we called out outlets on their coverage of Yasmin Fostok, discussed Sarah Maple’s artwork, reviewed Miss Undastood’s album, and packed in another great review of The Jewel of Madina (last one, we promise). Don’t forget the Friday links!
speaking of the rape culture, Jesurgislac also has a spot of a young rape victim’s plea to Sarah Palin
1. There has been a ban on female genital mutilation in Uganda. 2. Do ‘immigrant classes’ help or hurt? 3. I’ve discovered Jill Trent, Science Sluth – a few decades late. 4. NewCat, my co-blogger, coaches us about how to write an op-ed about Palin. 5. Babies vs. Xenophobes.
I just launched a sex/gender/whatever I want blog, and I wrote several days ago about the Sarah Palin sex doll and how I found myself laughing at it rather than feeling outraged at the sexism. I don’t think I really uncovered why I felt that way, but hey, I tried.
I am going to try this again as it seems my first comment disappeared into an internet black hole. Celeb Chef Alton Brown displays his fat hatred: Apparently all fat people are disgusting and are the cause of us not leading sustainable lifestyles. Proposition 4: Why informing parents of the intention to have an abortion is a bad idea. Oh God the Trannies want to vote: The media using transgender individuals to discredit ACORN Using Proposition 8 To teach children hate: Children used by homophobes to spread the message (warning) shocking video.
Since there wasn’t a SSPS last week, and since (sadly) this is still topical, I wrote a piece on 8 October about what it means to “pal around” with Bill Ayers, inspired by a friend of mine who currently has ties to him: Am I friends with a terrorist sympathizer?
A list of some of the supporters John McCain is proud of. It’s one of my unfunny posts that I write sometimes. http://afunnyfeminist.blogspot.com/2008/10/john-mccain-is-proud-of-his-supporters.html A post about what the McCains don’t get about mental health. I posted this on the Feministing Community, which is where I usually post my unfunny stuff. http://community.feministing.com/2008/10/what-the-mccains-dont-get-abou.html Not a very funny week at my blog at all.
A study out of Iowa State University points to a possible link between female journalists and gender-biased politically reporting. Iowa Supreme Court ruled that evidence of postpartum depression should have been placed in evidence in the murder trial of mom accused of killing her infant son. The mom, Heidi Anfinson, is serving 50 years in the women’s correctional facility in Iowa for second-degree murder, but could be out on bail next week.
Mine keeps getting eaten by the spam filter. Not sure why. Try this and click to read the rest of the post: http://attitudeproblem.wordpress.com/2008/10/13/
I’ve been overcaffeinated busy this week: Breastfeeding and the Angelina Jolie Vanity Fair cover Excuse me, Senator McCain but living people’s “health” is sacred, too. And, the biggie: On abortion and religion. Enjoy!
This past week, I contemplated what a Democratic Super Majority would mean, realized I have a serious crush on Lin-Manuel Miranda & an obsession with In the Heights, and ended the week with lots of laughs. And, here’s a reminder to send me your submissions for the next Carnival of Feminists.
This week at Fourth Wave Feminism, Brianna muses on why we might want more stereotypical characters in film and television (but not in the way you think) and adds another installment to her “Feminist Anthems” series, this time about Sleater-Kinney. And I try to insert some humor in my debate recap, say Berkely Breathed’s Opus and consider why this most recent Palin-Fey sketch makes me even more uncomfortable than the others.
Since Nursing is a mostly female profession, maybe some of your readers will be interested on why I left Nursing and why I try to talk any female friend of mine who is considering the profession out of it.
Since the cause is good, I’m going to self-promote for the first time here. A Charity Calendar . It’s in Spanish. If you like bellydance and you care about gender violence, you can support a Spanish association that provides shelters, buying a gorgeous calendar with pictures of the best Spanish bellydancers. The price is 14$ including postage to the States for one calendar. If you’re interested email me, eugeniaandino at yahoo dot com.
I reviewed the new Australian book The Great Feminist Denial for Melbourne newspaper The Age, and responded (in blog form) to a Cosmopolitan article on “the man drought“.
I wrote a post about food and bodies that fell unexpectedly on (around love your body day. I also wrote about vegan activism as able-bodied privilege.
After taking some considerable time away from bloglandia this week, I come back w/ my thoughts after visiting The Bodies Exhibition in Honolulu. In the end, I am glad to have gone, but I also have a lot of questions and thoughts.
I write about visiting The Bodies Exhibition in Honolulu. In the end I was glad to have seen it for myself, but it did make me think about a lot of troubling issues.
I write about seeing The Bodies Exhibition in Honolulu. While I am glad to have seen it for myself, it did raise a lot of questions and thoughts for me.
In the last few posts, Dior 2009 “Tribal Chic” about the appropriation and exploitation of African aesthetic in fashion and subsequent lack of models of color.
Offensive Obama Sign In McCain Campaign Office The John McCain campaign off in Pompano Beach, Florida hung a poster that compared Barack Obama to Karl Marx, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, and Benito Mussolini. The first complaint was issued by a Republican.
I’ve got a post up about why sex work is not “a job like any other job.” This is actually from last Friday, but I think it’s decent and not too out of date… a post about the firing of a bunch of sex writers and how those writers are being misrepresented. Also, a post w/ a bunch of randomness.
Okay, I need some remedial help when someone has a chance. But I did have a clip about at 108 year old local woman who voted for Obama (http://aftercancernowwhat.wordpress.com/2008/10/18/shes-108-and-voted-for-obama/) As well as a response to whack job Jack Kelly (http://aftercancernowwhat.wordpress.com/2008/10/14/wacko-right-wingers/) A piece about William Ayers and G. Gordon Liddy (http://aftercancernowwhat.wordpress.com/2008/10/17/ayers-or-liddy/) Any much too much information about the free James Taylor concerts.
This isn’t mine, but I think it needs flagging up anywhere where it’s going to get the attention of people who might care about it: http://ginmar.livejournal.com/1589502.html A stripper in a serious crisis needs help. Please, anyone who can, help out.
Fuckles…sorry about so many posts…when I post it just wasn’t doing anything. The comment wasn’t there, and there was no error or anything. so very sorry! *blushes*
Charlie posted on why McCain is the erractic one in this campaine. I posted on raising a biracial kid.
I’m a dork and messed up one my links (from comment 24): trying to insert some humor into my summary of the final debate.
Michelle Bachman (R-MN) channels Eugene McCarthy in Grand (Old Party) style, and gets a decency heads-up, 50s style. http://errport77.blogspot.com/2008/10/grand-old-partying-like-its-1954.html
I wrote a silly post about how this election year is completely sane compared to the election of 1872.
My first post got eaten. Political thoughts on abortion and health care and stuff Male privilege in the writing arena. And, it’s Paranormal Excerpt Month
I posted on why it’s ridiculous that the McCain campaign is targeting the term “spreading the wealth around” for ridicule: http://twixtcultureandnature.blogspot.com/2008/10/twixt-socialism-and-capitalism.html
Late to the party—sorry! My new blog lets the bigoted idiocy of the anti-marriage-equality crowd speak for itself….well, with a little help from snarky me. Here’s a sample: http://fundamentallyflawed.wordpress.com/2008/10/19/so-many-questions/
My reaction to the Colin Powell endorsement, specifically his comments about not using “Muslim” as a smear. http://noticingthegap.com/2008/10/19/what-if-he-is/
I posted the trailer for Matrioshki, an European series about human trafficking. It’s interesting in that it’s multi-lingual and very raw, and I discussed the difference between human trafficking and sex work. Some thoughts on Matthew Shepard’s death. The Executive Director of the Sex Professionals of Canada, Valerie Scott, was in Halifax last week and I volunteered at her talk. It was full of nifty.
Hey, sorry that this probably isn’t the place for this, but I don’t have a blog or anything to promote. Would one of you smart folks be interested in writing something on this new PG Porn idea, which is discussed in this WaPo article? I went to check out the spoof mentioned in the article and, you know, I personally think that when the money shot is the woman’s [Spoilers] “comical,” bloody death, it’s a lot more offensive than the depiction of orgasms. Gah.
Would love it if you’d check out my website and let me know thoughts. We also want to hear about good causes that are underfunded that support women. Want to especially help groups not already established but that are doing good work. Please support us and also let me hear from you. http://www.herfamilyjewels.com comments about how to enrich the site more than welcomed! Ally
