Shamless Self-Promotion Sunday, Monday Edition October 6, 2008 Jill Forgot to do this yesterday, sorry dudes. Self-promote away. (The Rules: Post a short description of a post you’ve written, along with a link. Don’t link to your entire blog; make it specific).
Hey, here’s what we’ve wrote about over at The Feminist Underground: 1. CNN says that men’s cheating is women’s fault… for not paying enough attention to the poor babies. 2. The EU is fighting to give working women there more paid maternity leave – while US women still have no guarantee to any paid maternity leave. 3. Maggie, our resident lawyer, discusses Joe Biden’s Violence Against Women Act. 4. Gender asylum in the US for victims of domestic violence is under review, and might be much harder or impossible to attain in the future. 5. Is Tina Fey helping or hurting?
A couple of things The Cambodia/Thai border dispute is heating up with shots fired and wounded over 4.5 kms of land A national newspaper laughs at domestic violence in Cambodia cos it’s just so funny In the same paper women are accused of destroying culture by wearing revealing clothing – classic slut-shaming And to lighten the mood, some Tom Lehrer š
Good Afternoon All! Over at the new and improved Jump off the Bridge: I found out the truth behind those annoying “omg, don’t wear any obama campaign gear on election day” messages I’ve been getting. I even heard it on the radio yesterday! You’d think they’d check their facts! and I’ve got my VP debate recap. ENJOY!
I wrote about this gender-essentialist-non-news-story in the New York Times about straight guys & cat ownership. Bonus: I made an LOLCat of my newborn kitty, Mississippi.
On my jewelry design blog I posted a custom piece of jewelry that I created over the weekend for a wedding. Over on my personal blog I posted the winner of the Canadian 2008 Polaris Music Award.
Black man beats Black woman at McDonalds: Silence Submission and Golden Arches. . A woman is beaten for standing up for herself and no one comes to her aid. A commentary on the violence faced by WOC So I got my period: A conversation about menstruation and why we feel the need to create it as dirty and foul. Michael Savage: Gays are ruining the world. A commentary on how hate speech is often masked as free speech.
I wrote about how sex positive feminism isn’t about maintaining the status quo, which is what radical feminist critics often try to suggest.
A post about male privilege, after I got sick of hearing men say that there was no such thing…and denying it existed after I posted handy links.
This week on MMW, we look at Muslim women’s sexuality through film, wondered about ethnic/cultural representation in the Guardian’s “This Muslim Life” column, review Sumbul Ali Karamali’s The Muslim Next Door, examine the Manji vs. Mogahed debate, deconstruct cultural and capitalist appropriation of Afghan culture in a New Zealand catwalk, look at Na’ima B. Roberts’ personal journal for the Times Online, review Azadeh Moaveni’s Lipstick Jihad, and crown ourselves queens of the Friday link list.
I prove that there’s at least one conservative famous person. http://afunnyfeminist.blogspot.com/2008/10/who-says-famous-people-arent-republican.html I make fun of Palin’s misquote of Albright. http://afunnyfeminist.blogspot.com/2008/10/not-exactly-what-albright-said-or-meant.html
I also just posted the question on my mind right now, given LA NOW’s president endorsing Palin: what does a feminist look like? I’ll stop bugging everyone now. =)
I’m taking open submissions for my new zine called Sexy! The aim is to look at sex and sexuality through the frame of the modern hardcore and punk scene. I originally wanted it to just be an upstate NY thing, but my focus is a bit too narrow for the subject matter. Please post away! http://sexyzine.wordpress.com/
We’ve got a couple of posts up about traveling: – keeping in mind cultural differences when going abroad – the comforts you look to when away from home We also consider another perspective on sorority life, and how interracial relationships are still an issue today.
A reminder that Hawai’i isn’t just sunshine, especially to the thousands who make the beach their home. And just something cool!
The first in our series about favorite swear words: BITCH!, my favorite word. Check us out, bitch, and revel in my bitchness, my bitchiness, and my bitching. Add some of your own to the comments. And as always, stay bitchy!
I posted a bunch of music stuff on After Ellen–about new all female hip hop supergroup FEM, awesome girlgroup-meets-the-Buzzcocks band Looker’s great new album and the fabulous Alina Simone’s plans to record with Arcade Fire producer Howard Ian Bilerman. On my own blog I posted my recipe for vegan seitan sausage.
On After Ellen I posted about: Female Emcee Supergroup FEM The fabulous Alina Simone’s recording plans Girlgroup Punk Rock Looker’s great new album and at my own blog: My recipe for vegan sausage
I wrote about how Afghanistan women are under threat from the Taliban. It seems like the situation is worsening
At Macha Mexico, my girlfriend just posted an interesting interview with the owner of El Marrakech, a new and successful gay bar in Mexico City. He talks about surviving in the context of a series of gay bar raids (and closures) that have been taking place over the past few years, as well as about how his bar has managed to attract one of the most diverse queer crowds in the D.F. Check it out!
And I just wrote about Bill Ayers, who is all over the news lately. His wife, the real powerhouse of the Weathermen, is being left out of this discussion…as usual, it’s all about the GUYZ!
In which I am accosted by an 8-year-old McCain supporter while canvassing. Funny stuff. In which I am super-impressed by the CA priest who spoke out against Prop 8, risking a 23 year career. In which you can help me with a scholarship contest and send me to study Women’s Studies!
hey frau Sally Benz, where do you live? We’re having a strange little debate about dress-codes at the polls in PA for real. Maine, Montana, Vermont & Kansas apparently do have rules prohibiting wearing campaign paraphernalia to the polls. I wrote about John McCain being all mavericky and stuff & why the McCain-Palin campaign should be careful when playing the guilt by association game. I’d also like to know if anyone can please tell me what Jesus has to do with student council.
This week over at Fourth Wave: A Live-Blog of the VP debate Feminist Rap?, in which Brianna explores whether or not contemporary rap and its (lack of) feminism Joe Biden and Gay Marriage: why we shouldn’t get too worked up over gay marriage How many times have you seen this today?: a critical analysis of the correlation between Tina Fey and Sarah Palin
this will probably be a recurring theme in my blog as related to the safety (or lack thereof) of all human beings. first up: my reaction to my sister having been raped.
Also, anyone who is not busy tomorrow should tune into Kate and my feminist radio show! Details here.
At City of Ladies, I blogged about my visit to the doctor to get Accutane, and thence about unnecessary government regulation of women’s lives: Unborn Mutant Ninja Babies
A homemade satire of McCain/Palin, The Fixin to Vote Rag: http://snipurl.com/44tko And it’s 1, 2, 3, what are we fighting for? dk
I’ve posted on OpEdNews on how progressives keep getting what Conservatives deserve. We can’t afford to elect Barbie Spice (kudos to fellow blogger) and McWarmonger.
Over at Pink Scare: I break down the economics of traditional marriage by looking at my own parents’ marriage and separation. T and I take turns tearing apart an article in the New Left Review which is painfully dismissive of racism and sexism as sources of oppression. LN considers Cynthia McKinney as a candidate.
I made a video blog about my impressions of the Biden/Palin debate, how the past 8 years of Bush mean that getting Iran to give up nukes is extremely unlikely, and also about the strange thing I found while tidying my flat! I’ve also created a couple of “manga avatars”, one for my female persona and one for my more usual male side; there’s also some musings on how each side is the same and yet different, but drawing no conclusions from them, just rambling a bit.
I expressed my frustration about the average voter being called Joe Six Pack (when clearly the average voter is a woman).
My own personal response to “The heels are on, the gloves are off ” http://aftercancernowwhat.wordpress.com/2008/10/06/the-heels-are-on-the-gloves-are-off/
I ramble in ways I may or may not actually mean–I’ll have to get back to you on that, still making up my mind on stuff–aboutnot judging people with different priorities than you. Post-debate babble. Also, currently up are a series of short notes about random weird school things like how annoying it is to read Marx and why I should curb my natural flippant tendencies when writing papers.
I posted about a young woman murdered in New Orleans, and a peace march being organized for November 1st. http://stormsaintstreetcars.blogspot.com/2008/10/i-wont-forget-jessica-hawk.html
I just put up a post (actually it’s more of a long, rambling diatribe) on sexpoz raunch culture. http://bellpepperlikestolook.wordpress.com/2008/10/06/volunteer-sexwork-burlesque-your-way-to-satisfaction/ It came out sounding more ranty than I intended. Oh well.
Can I plug a friend here? Soujin is 18 and recovering from an ED, and she posted a really beautiful rant about body image.
to continue in the shameless plug series… This is about a rural adventure in India (women can be in serious trouble sometimes for ignoring the norms…) — REVOLUTIONIZING (almost ruining) A RURAL INDIAN (BRAHMIN) MARRIAGE (http://fleuve-souterrain.blogspot.com/2008/09/revolutionizing-just-short-of-ruining.html) thoughts on the sub-prime crisis —BAILOUT TALE FROM A DUMP-HEADED VILLAGE (http://fleuve-souterrain.blogspot.com/2008/09/bailout-tale-from-dump-headed-village.html) a new poem —POST-HARVEST –A POEM (http://fleuve-souterrain.blogspot.com/2008/09/post-harvest-poem-i-read-at-csma.html) fashion magazine culture in India —VOGUE-INDIA — NOT A LA MODE (http://fleuve-souterrain.blogspot.com/2008/09/vogue-india-not-la-mode.html) sarah palin rant —WILL THE REAL SARAH PALIN STAND UP PLEASE? (http://fleuve-souterrain.blogspot.com/2008/09/will-real-sarah-palin-stand-up-please.html) more published poems —THREE POEMS IN KRITYA (http://fleuve-souterrain.blogspot.com/2008/09/three-poems-in-kritya.html)
Over at the Big Imperfect Orange Monster, I (an imperfect beige monster) use some religious imagery from a secular point of view to encourage us all to be not afraid in face of the new thugitude, i.e. the old thugitude, from Team McCain/Palin.
Late to the game here, but I wrote A Just Gender Culture, Or, To End Sexism, We May Need More Gender, Not Less over at a great new progressive group blog, Revolutionary Act I think the title is description enough; I’d love everybody’s takes on the post/idea (not exactly a new one, but still), if folks are so moved.
I wrote: Palin and the McCain: are you pondering what Iām pondering? about the strong and strange resemblance between the scary Presidential duo and the furry cartoon duo. Narf. Also, I pointed out (again) that Being ‘Pro-Life’ has nothing to do with being pro-life.
