L’shana Tova!

Or are you supposed to say “Shana Tova”? Either way, happy new year!

Anyone celebrating? Anyone else have the day off?

  1. Yeah, major holidays (including Jewish holidays) off is one of the benefits at working at a liberal law firm. Of course, by “day off” I actually mean “working from home,” but it’s something…

  2. L’shanah tovah is a shortened version of the traditional phrase l’shanah tovah tikatevu, “May you be inscribed for a good year”β€”some people add, especially on Yom Kippur, ve-tehatemu, “and may you be sealed”. Shanah tovah just means “Good year” and works well enough.

  3. well, a day off would just be a day of skipping med school and that’s more work than rest, so no.

but second night supper is going to be worth taking a break for!

  4. I wish we got a day off…I’m afraid the extent of my celebration will be buying a round challah and some apples and honey and singing to myself, all alone.

  5. There are 3 days in a year that I do not work (no checking my work email, no checking voicemail, no calling my staff for work issues), of course I’m not in shul today but I am looking forward to my new year πŸ™‚

  6. I took yesterday off (even though I wasn’t planning on it… stupid pain) and brought in some honey and challah to the office this morning. Unfortunately there was some household drama yesterday that ruined my Jew Year’s Eve, so it wasn’t so great — bygones. Oy, and we had the WORST kosher wine ever — tasted even more like cough syrup than Manischewitz… I think it might just have been repackaged Dimatap.

  7. I go to a Catholic college and my professor isn’t Jewish, so I don’t have off today. I would be thrilled if he canceled class on Election Day, but I know he won’t, even though I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if people skipped to go vote (for Obama).

  8. Today also happens to be the end of Ramadan and the start of the Eid holidays. So, Eid Mubarak to all who are celebrating it, and a special “woo woo” for eating-during-daylight-again! πŸ™‚

  9. I work for a synagogue. Having random weekdays off during the holidays just about makes up for all the crazy logistics of making them happen in the first place.

  10. Yay for religious holidays! I wish we had eid off, but I guess we’re not quite there yet. Besides, is any day a day off at law school?

  11. I say L’Shana Tovah, myself. Celebrating, well, not really, and I’m a law student so days off don’t exist, but that’s all right. I still feel celebratory inside, hehe.

  12. I took the day off! Last minute of course because as a “only sometimes practicing” Jew i rarely know WHEN the Jewish holidays are until a few days before hehe. Shana Tova! πŸ™‚

  13. Shana Tova, everyone! I took the morning off and went to services, even though I’m not really a believer – going to the high holiday services makes me feel like I haven’t completely been kicked out of the tribe, and does provide a useful opportunity for reflection about the previous year, the coming year, mistakes and forgiveness.

  14. Shana Tova! If only I hadn’t suddenly had several meetings pop up, I’d have taken the day off!
