Fighting On Ground Of Our Choosing

Sometimes, our enemies are stupid enough to pick a fight where almost everyone is for us and against them. As the far right overreaches, this becomes increasingly common. From the great Alas, A Blog, I picked this up.

There is soon to be a Human Papilloma Virus vaccine. HPV increases womens’ risk of cervical cancer. The far-righties of the abstain-or-die stripe are gearing up to oppose vaccinating teens before they become sexually active because (three guesses and the first two don’t count) it will encourage them to have sex!

You all know I’ve been ranting for awhile that the real belief these folks hold dear is that STI’s and pregnancy are God’s chosen punishment for fornication. I never thought they’d admit it — but what is this except an admission? There’s a sexually transmitted disease. There’s a vaccine. They don’t want teens to have the vaccine. It follows inescapably that they want the disease to remain a risk the teens face if they have sex.

Apparently, 80% are with us on this.

  1. There’s also a Herpes vaccinne in the last stages of testing. (by last stages, we’re still talking about a few years, but it’s pretty neat, nonetheless).

The risk of STDs appears to have done little to discourage people from having sex, so I doubt that lessening the risk will really have much of an effect on people’s sex lives either.

  2. Best of all, it’s an STD carried by men that kills only women. How much better could punishment be targeted than that? However, since men CAN get genital warts and find them annoying, there may be hope. I wrote about it earlier this week, if you’re interested.

  3. I believe this is the vaccine I saw introduced on Canada AM last November. Although the online article doesn’t mention it, the live interview said this vaccine would be for both men and women since it prevents so many kinds of cancer. My reaction was, so – are vaccinations in elementary school early enough?! I mean, good grief, who wouldn’t jump at the chance to immunize against CANCER of all things. If they can promote just it based on that, and avoid mention of relation to sexual activity, then we might have better success.

They already have something for that: it’s called sperm. That’s why you must poke holes in condoms to ‘give the sperm a fighting chance’ *heavy sarcasm*

  5. sick sick sick.

yes, clearly denying people access to a vaccine that could save their lives is morally superior to giving them access to the vaccine. culture of life!

but I do love when they reveal their true colors like this. Keep it up, jerks, until you end up losing all credibility.
