Friday Random Ten – The Procrastination of Deadlines Edition

If it’s Friday somewhere, it’s time for the Friday Random Ten.

Make sure your boss isn’t around, load up all your mp3s to your favorite player, and list the first ten that appear. Rock out in your cubicle and thank your higher-power-of-choice that it’s Friday. Fellow atheists, thank yourself for having the proverbial cajones to last another week of daily drudgery. Has it been that kind of week for anyone else?

1) The Cramps – All Women Are Bad (what a thing to post on a feminist blog. hm.)
2) Joan Jett – Wild Thing
3) Louis XIV – Finding Out True Love Is Blind
4) Reverend Horton Heat – D is for Dangerous
5) Pixies – There Goes My Gun
6) Erykah Badu – Bag Lady (Tricky remix)
7) Rappin’ 4-Tay – I’ll Be Around
8) Donovan – Wear Your Love Like Heaven
9) Princess Superstar – Fuck the Phone
10) The Blasters – Marie, Marie

And an extra: In honor of the lesson plan I am scheduled to teach tomorrow morning, here is a rather elegant recording of T.S. Eliot reading his famous poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” PC users, right click save as. You snobby Mac users do whatever it is you do.

  1. Yeah, it’s been a pretty busy week. Tonight was shitty….

I went to that Horowitz talk. So I’m going to sit here, get loaded, and write a post on it. I think that “My Laziest Post Ever” is the current working title.

(It was really, really, really bad.)

  2. Boss? I am my own boss! Envelope stuffing has never been so profitable, thanks to my army of elementary school students who have agreed to be paid in chocolate milk. OK, this time I will not skip over songs that make me look uncool, I swear. These are the real 10:

    (1) Blue Canadian Rockies — The Byrds
    (2) Land of 1000 Dances — Wilson Pickett
    (3) Ironhead — Helmet
    (4) Hold on Hope — Guided by Voices
    (5) Through With Buzz — Steely Dan (actually, this is my favorite non-punk song that clocks in under 1:45)
    (6) Where You Get Love — Matthew Sweet
    (7) Baby I’m Drunk — The Reverend Horton Heat, who turns 83 on Friday.
    (8) Brooklyn-Queens — 3rd Bass
    (9) Time Changes Everything — Roy Rogers
    (10) Bo Diddley — Emerson, Lake & Palmer. It’s not even really a cover of the song of the same name by the artist of the same name.

About 80% successful. Not so bad.

  3. mae shi – litllite
    the cure- lullaby
digital underground – freaks of the industry
go team – get it together
    aceyalone – find out
babe the blue ox – can’t stand up
howie b.- angels go bald too (swordsmen remix)
    feelies – the high road
    t. rex – rip off
granddaddy – el caminos in the west

  4. OMG thank you so much for the Eliot. I seriously do love him, and hearing him read some of my favorite bits of “Love Song” makes me happy, and makes today suck a little bit less.

    You rock!

    (Wow! Real time preview! Crazy…)

  5. After last week’s All-Asian Special, there had to be an
    African and Afro-Caribbean Heritage Edition:

    1) Loraine – Linton Kwesi Johnson (random, I swear!)
    2) Kunte Kinte – Mad Professor
    3) Meet The G That Killed Me – Public Enemy
    4) sick ‘n’ tired – Ms. Dynamite
    5) Vibes And Stuff – A Tribe Called Quest
    6) Moses, Moses – Prince Far I
    7) Hills and Valleys – Buju Banton
    8) Ghost Dog Theme – RZA
    9) Heven Tonite – The Coup
    10) Cool Mountaineer – Bad Brains

Genre representation by number of titles: Hip Hop: 4, Reggae / Dub: 4, Rythm ‘n’ Blues / Garage: 1, Punk Rock: 1.
Oddly enough, I don’t own any actual African music CD, even though I listen to it pretty regularly on the radio (nuff respect to Radio France Internationale’s Claudy Siard: ‘toi-même tu sais!’, grand frère).

    1) Let’s Settle Down – Vanessa Williams – Bye Bye Birdie 1995 tv soundtrack (That green stuff’s grass, and that smell everywhere – do you know what that is? Fresh air!)

    2) Pinball Wizard – The Who – Tommy (I love the acoustic guitar on this album) (Ironically, when you do an Amazon search in music for “Tommy,” the soundtracks for both The L Word and Queer as Folk come up on the first page. They’re on the Tommy Boy label.)

    3) Veil of Mist – Robert Rich – Rainforest

    4) You Don’t Know Me – Eva Cassidy & Chuck Brown- The Other Side (I love this song, especially when Meryl Streep sang it in Postcards From the Edge. I can strum out a fair rendition on my now long-neglected guitar. Perhaps this summer…)

    5) Your Tongue Like the Sun In My Mouth – Sophie B. Hawkins – Timbre (Oh my. I’ll have what she’s having.)

  9. gah. Am I the only person who hates Eliot’s reading of Prufrock? Completely ruins the opening lines for me, in that nasally intonation. Maybe it’s because I’m a fellow St. Louis native and I think his fake British accent is pretentious and stupid.

  10. No, Eliot’s voice gets on my nerves as well. He has a naturally lovely baritone, but he whines it, ending up sounding more like a caricature than anything.
