  1. Drudge has a link to a video of an ex-Dem chairman laughing about how it’s going to strike New Orleans just as the GOP convention is set to open session.

  3. He’s not the only one. Bill Press, on his show Friday, was positively giddy (and giggly) about Gustav slamming us during the convention. Michael Moore had some very affectionate words about the (currently Category 4) storm as well.

    As we of coastal Louisiana brace ourselves or evacuate, I’m amazed by the number of so-called “progressives”, blogs included, who want to see Louisiana devastated for the second time in three years, just because it might be bad for McCain. Sorry if I don’t agree. Personally, I’d prefer not to have anymore trees in my house (I’m in SWLA), and my friends in Cameron Parish would prefer not to rebuild from the slab up AGAIN. As for my friends in New Orleans, they’d rather not test the newpaper-stuffed levees either.

    And as for Gustav as a political tool…I’m guessing none of these “progressive” tools have thought about what it would mean if the levees DO manage to hold this time. That doesn’t play into their giddiness. Gustav only works as an anti-GOP meme if New Orleans floods again. But screw us, right? Louisiana always votes Republican in the Presidential anyway. Why not be happy to use us as pawns?

    We’ll be riding the storm out this time (ironically, we spent last weekend in New Orleans at the Rising Tide III convention.) So, thank you Lauren, and everyone else, for your concern. It means the world.

On the BBC news last night they had a short segment where they talked to a woman who had only just received the keys to her new home that morning, after her last one was destroyed by Katrina – as she waited to be evacuated, presumably not knowing if her new home would still be there in a couple of days’ time.

    I know it’s the type of media piece designed to get a reaction, but it definitely tugged my heartstrings.

    Also, I was fascinated that the mayor used the term, “you need to get your butts out of New Orleans”. I just don’t normally associate that sort of language with politicians!

  8. I have been watching the weather updates here up North even though I don’t know anyone in New Orleans. I keep flashing back to images from Katrina…I so hope that everyone will be okay and I am glad that they are evacuating this time and not risking peoples lives.

    @Phoebe yes I too have heard and seen a lot of laughter regarding the GOP convention, and how this is the Karma boomerang for wishing rain on Obamas speech. People seem to forget that there are real lives involved. Human life is worth more than political affiliations.

  10. Jesus- I never would have thought “progressives” would be happy about another natural disaster that will kill people and quite probably flood New Orleans again-destroying more homes and businesses.

    Being gleeful about that is really fucked up, and something I would have expected out of, well, our Fearless Leader. Or Dick Cheney.

    I just hope that the levees hold and everyone will be ok-and that people will have homes to go back to.

  11. Thank you so much for not forgetting about us down here. We sat through Gustav out in Baton Rouge only to have that area get hit worse than New Orleans this time around. The electricity was out for three days and the power is still out in most of the city of Baton Rouge and many parts of New Orleans, too. I hope we can make it through the rest of the season okay. Many people were only barely able to afford to evacuate this time around.
