Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday

gay pride
Yay for Pride in NY! Anyone else get caught in the rain?

Between Sunday brunching, gay pride parade-ing, and bar studying, I’m getting this up a little late. Apologies. As always, feel free to continue shamelessly self-promoting here throughout the week. The rules: In the comments, post something you wrote recently, with a link and a short description. Make it specific — not a link to your entire blog.

  1. In Part Of The Problem, I wrote about how it’s no more acceptable for “plus-size” women to ridicule thin women’s bodies than vice versa – an old topic that recently struck a chord.

  2. I wrote a response to a recent NYT article about how graduates of elite colleges are apparently going straight to high-paying, corporate jobs, instead of going into any public service.

  3. GT 2008-06-23 (trigger warning), in which a grand jury declares that the Stark Count Ohio Sheriff’s Office did nothing wrong when a gang of several male and female deputies held Hope Steffey down in a jail cell, forcibly removed her clothes over her screams of protest while wrenching her arms behind her back, and then left her completely naked in a freezing jail cell in public view for six hours. (Cf. also GT 2008-02-05: the original story (trigger warning) and follow-ups on the case, including five more women who came forward with complaints about the use of retaliatory, humiliating, unnecessary strip-searches in the Stark County jail.) Steffey is pursuing a lawsuit in federal court.

GT 2008-06-26: State ownership of the means of reproduction (#2) in which I comment on the AMA’s recently adopted resolution calling for “model legislation” to prohibit women from choosing a midwife-assisted home birth.

  4. Over the past week or so, I wrtote about the illogic underlying feminist transphobia, the nature of “female privilege”, and why it’s not a feminist issue, and I also had a go at my own version of the “how men can d better in feminist spaces” genre, after feeling slightly disappointed by The F-Word’s recent post (after all, I can’t criticise unless I’m willing to try it myself). Comments on all would be welcome, but especially advice on how to improve the last one.

On a more fun note, I made a video for “Half-Nekkid Thursday” this week, which combined HNT with my love of music. I guess it’s NSFW, and also, I’m somewhat tubby, so you have been warned!

  5. I wrote about the oh-so-unnecessary girls-only shopping camp to which parents in the great state of Kentucky can send their young women shoppers so that they may learn:

    * public speaking (how to tell what clothes they like and why)
    * how to find reference material (in Barnes & Noble (what, no libraries in Kentucky))
    * that not everyone can be a cheerleader, so why not be a SHOPPER?

  6. I have set up the MORAG project – that’s Medical and Obstetric Rape Awareness Group – to raise awareness of the violation that some women experience during childbirth or a gynae procedure, at the hands of medical staff. I am also encouraging women who have experienced this to write in with their stories, which I will put up on the site to share with other women. Thanks, Debs xx

  7. I gave a talk at my church yesterday. It was called “Honouring Canadian Women”, and the text of it is here:

I changed a few things on the fly, but that’s the gist. It went over quite well. People told me stories of their own work in feminism, including a 90 year old man who told me that when he was the president of the golf club near me, he got the rules changed to require gender equity (i.e. women didn’t need to be sponsored by men to join, and could hold any position on the club council).
