Michelle Obama Watch

mow.jpg

For those of you who have not yet seen it, the new Michelle Obama Watch website is up and running. The site is designed to be “a repository of all of the criticism, praise, and general chicanery thrown at Michelle Obama between now and November.” And I personally think that it’s a brilliant idea.

They are looking for volunteers to help out with the documentation, and you can read more about it here at What About Our Daughters?. Interestingly enough, the Obama campaign themselves have started a Fight The Smears website, designed to combat the swiftboating of both Barack and Michelle that has already begun. Let’s hope that this is a sign of their learning a thing or two from John Kerry.

To go back to just Michelle, in the less than two weeks since Barack reached the needed number of delegates to become the presumptive nominee, a lot of shit has gone down. The “fist bump” between Michelle and Barack before he began his victory speech was referred to as a “terrorist fist jab.” (For the record, when I saw them do that for the first time, I practically melted and thought it was the cutest thing ever — much more touching, intimate and acknowledging of the other than a mere kiss would have been. I think most couples have private little things they do like that, and it came across to me as very loving. The kiss is so often for show, but you could tell that the “bump” was for them and made them look like equals. Probably part of the reason, other than the blatant racism, why the media obsessed over it.) There has been the completely shameful debacle over an alleged but nonexistent tape in which Michelle was said to have repeatedly used the term “whitey.” Of course, though the tape has failed to surface and though no one seems to have actually seen the tape, the accusers aren’t rushing to make apologies over the ridiculous, and racist, character assassination. And last but certainly not least, there’s Fox News calling Michelle “Obama’s Baby Mama,” the offensiveness, racism and misogyny of which has been explained by many.

And then you’ve just got your run of the mill, bullshit, breathless analysis of Michelle’s wardrobe choices, and the references to her “strong personality.” You know, I think that Obama looks very good in his suits, but unless I missed it, I don’t remember seeing his wardrobe profile on the New York Times Style page. And I think that by now, feminists ought to be aware that “strong personality” is another way of saying “bitch,” “nag,” “uppity” and “has opinions so is therefore a liability to her husband.” Hillary Clinton and Theresa Heinz Kerry, anyone? “Strong personality” should be a compliment. But come on, now — we know it’s not. Any candidate’s wife who doesn’t stand a polite ten paces behind her husband and keep her mouth shut except to smile gets this sexist shit. When you add race into the mix, it all gets multiplied, and we’re watching it happen right now.

Michelle Obama is an impressive and inspiring woman who consistently gets her accomplishments downplayed because of both her gender and her race. Pissed off about the media misogyny thrown at Hillary Clinton? Angry about the racism leveled at Barack Obama? None of that is right, but remember that theirs are the credentials and character that are supposed to be under scrutiny. And yeah, Michelle knew what she was getting herself into when she signed up for the presidential race. But the fact remains that if we’re upset about sexism against Hillary and racism against Barack, we should be doubly upset about the racism and sexism against Michelle — especially because in addition to beating her down, opponents are actually using her as a weapon against her husband. The implication is that they must share the same views — because women can’t come up with any on their own. (The same thing happened to Hillary whenever she was grilled on previous positions taken by Bill as though disagreeing with them was akin to contradicting herself.) And if Barack can’t even keep his wife in line, how’s he going to run the country, right?

This needs to stop, but it’s probably not going to. And so we really need to start paying attention.

  1. Me three, thanks for this. I’ve watched Michelle Obama four or five times on C-Span with people and just rejoice in her warmth and naturalness, intelligence, spirit. So she’s definitely up to this challenge though it makes me sad to see it starting up because it almost demands that a person inhibit and insulate and she’s especially appealing for her openness and responsiveness. I like that Obama’s campaign is confronting this stuff. I also felt that the primary showed a hint this year of cheap shots doing more harm to the sender than the target. I could be running on wishful thinking but I thought I saw a series of those. Like maybe there’s a little maturing going on in our collective people. Wouldn’t that be lovely. Did you know Michelle Obama’s brother Craig Robinson is coaching basketball for Oregon State University in Corvallis? That’s about an hour from the other university in Eugene. So the last time the Obamas came to Oregon, she was on her own for awhile and stopped for an ice cream at a favorite shop near the University. Everybody loved her. Then they visited her brother and went to Portland where those 75,000 people turned out to hear him … they had their daughters with them. There are too many open hearts this time for that swiftboating stuff to work. Says me.

  2. I would love to have Michelle as first lady. I wasn’t very cognizant of politics until 2000 (too young), so I don’t remember much of Hilary’s time, but from what I’ve learned, it seems like Michelle will be like her times ten. Both of them are fantastic lawyers and politicians (Michelle’s speech on elitism was excellent), and Michelle has the added bonus of experience of community organizing and a more progressive outlook.

  3. I honestly think Michelle’s response to the attacks that are going to be thrown at her and Barack throughout this campaign are what will make the difference between a strong Obama victory and total Democratic landslide in November. Michelle, like Barack, is perfectly suited to play the role of a transformative public figure – personally strong enough not to let the attacks shake her (they say a lot about the attacker, nothing about the attackee), an uncommon synthesis of the values that tend to be seen as opposing in certain crowds. She’s a strong woman AND a loving wife. She has a successful career AND is a loving mother. The same is true for Barack.

The Obamas, and it sounds strange to say this, are in some way a manifestation of the beliefs that get attached to the “ideal heterosexual American couple”. Progressives with family values. Wealthy (compared to the average, not compared to other politicians) and “successful”, built on careers of service. Churchgoing liberals. Urban suburbanites. Home-grown foreigners. It’s easy to see the yin and yang of the American psyche manifested in them.

And they seem like great people to sit down and have dinner with.

  4. I have a lot of respect for both Michelle and Barack Obama. So far they’ve responded well to the attacks against them. I feel kind of protective about them, though, like I don’t want things to get too bad, though I know things will get really bad during the election season.

  5. I saw that fist bump and loved them immediately for it. I love the energy they have together, it’s so easygoing and comfortable. Thanks for the post.

  6. I am currently overseas and spend a lot of time on the net keeping up with the latest news. This is an excellent idea. I can assure you all Barack and Michelle Obama are highly regarded internationally. Pity some of our own citizens are letting down the team. I was shocked at some of the dreadful comments regarding this fine couple on the Hillbuzz website. What is up with this so-called “women for Hillary” site? Some of the nastiest, most racist stuff I have read anywhere from what we are meant to believe are progressive, intelligent women. Can someone bring me up to date with who or what is behind that movement? I have a lot of time and respect for Hillary, but some of her supporters need to get a grip.

  7. Dianne, where on the site (which I agree is foul) does it say it’s run by “women for Hillary”? Or progressives, for that matter? I see it described as run by “blue-collar centrists”. No gender specified. Please, do not contribute to the *bitter women* / *splintered women* / *irresponsible, letting-down-the-world-over-hurt-feelings women* narratives already so pervasive and which I suspect are very beneficial to certain groups (women not being one of them). It’s not just women who supported Hillary or who are at the helm of such websites, and it’s not clear to anyone at this point how many people they represent and what the outcomes will be.

  8. What I loved about the fist bump was Michelle’s expression immediately afterwards. She loves Barack, she respects him, she honors him–and he’s giving it right back. And she knows it. They are so good together.

  9. Charity, I certainly hope you are correct and that women for Hillary are not behind the Hillbuzz site. I did a bit of searching on the internet and found an early post suggesting that it was started by a “progressive group of women in support of Hillary Clinton…” Hence my query on the previous post. I do not believe I am contributing to negative narratives, I was merely asking the question, who is behind this vitriol. And again I repeat, if there is a group of women (however small) who intend to move to McCain, they really do need to get a grip.

  10. If I were personally not wishing to contribute to narratives that are damaging to women, I might refrain from saying, “if there is a group of women” [insert Armageddon-blaming], and start saying “if there is a group of women and men” [insert Armageddon-blaming]…for a start. There, see how easy that was? Now, everyone is responsible for the way the election plays out and the whole world suffers or doesn’t suffer. Not just women. How about reading the Frank Rich article linked to, on this very blog.

  11. This is a great site and the idea of having Michele’s ‘recording site’ is neat. But I am wondering why did Barack grab her posterior, ever so gently, but why in full view? Isn’t it a continuation of the ‘sweetie’ comment he flippantly and smugly threw at that poor female reporter? Why did he give the finger to Hillary on the eponymous YouTube mega-hit video? It amazes me that an educated would-be presidential material like BHO would deem it fit to disgrace himself by showing such utter disrespct for his fellow (female) senator in full view of thoiusands of his followers on N.C. stage day afer the Pa. debate!
I do feel that he has displayed misogynist covert commentary and actions and he has gotten away with them because of media’s overfawning–and has directly benefitted from same, being ‘pushed’ to the superdel finish line by a more blatantly displayed misogyny by the media frat-boys.

You call yourselves “FEministe” site. But do you ever scrutinize Sen. Obama’s sexist comments: “Her claws came out” “Periodically, she gets moody, feels down and attacks….” come on now, Feministe, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT….

  12. Diane, in response to your suggestion that ex-Hillary supporters “get a grip” in considering going over to McCain this November, please do not be overly harsh in your judgment on this….Some of these women are hurting at the media misogynists’ frat-boy antics that diminished Hillary Clinton and allowed Obama to reachh the finishline of superdels a lot quicker than he otherwise might have had, were it not for this open display of woman-bashing. Don Imus was justly fired over racist comments and Barack himself wrote a letter to NBC about this. but I heard not a sound from him while the Hillary-bashing wagon was going by him in full view! Of course he was sole benefactor. But he gave a speech on Race and played hte race-bait card throughout. No one would touch him–there are laws against Racist commentary and you can lose your job. But, unfortuantely, no equal treatment extends to Women subjected to overt hideous and devastating sexist treatment by the media frat-boys!
Back in 2005 in Bahgdad, Sen. McCain was asked about Hillary’s possible presidential ambitions and this is whtat he said: “I have no doubt Sen. Clinton would make a great president” he responded to Tim Russert. He has respect and that’s something that Obam has not shown to HRC or to women in general!
McCain is a moderate and he’ll get some HRC supporters for sure. But most will, in feminist protest, write in “Hillary Clinton” and few will vote for CYNTHIA MCCINNON, the AA Green Party leader. They will remember how Barack got his start in Chicago by knocking off the ballot his AA mentor and benefactor Sen. ALICE PALMER, behind her back, using legal thuggery and typical Chicago dirty tactics…Now he’s bringing DNC in Chicago with him….I believe that Rev. Wright, his former mentor, whom he also threw under the bus of his political ambition, was not wrong when he said:

“Barack’s just another Typical Politician….he’ll do anything….and say anything….to get where he wants….” And a speech on Gender he will never make as he feels it does not warrant it….

  13. OK, the fashion analysis is so weird.

When Mr. Obama and his wife triumphantly took the stage in St. Paul Tuesday to claim the Democratic presidential nomination, the candidate, dressed in one of the crisp, neutral suits that have made him a GQ darling, was momentarily upstaged by his wife, and not just because she knuckle-bumped him in front of the world.

What grabbed the eye was the sleeveless purple silk crepe sheath made for Mrs. Obama by Maria Pinto, the former Geoffrey Beene assistant who has long been an Obama favorite.

WHAT? In what universe? I watched that video and I guess I reacted to the dress in that it was brightly coloured and very conservative but I had to scroll back up the pictures to even remember what colour it was!

Surely very few people actually notice clothes like this? I’m sure she has to analyse the hell out of her wardrobe but this depth of thought is just insane.

I did notice OTOH that she has rather lovely arms 😀

  14. Charity, I am not too interested in the male role here. I am simply asking the question (as are many others considering the response to the Frank Rich article) do these disaffected women really exist? Again, I do not see how asking the question, gender specific as it may be, is creating a negative narrative. It is not about blame, it is about truth seeking. If we are not allowed to ask a simple question where are we heading?

  15. I would just like to draw people’s attention to a particularly misogynistic and racist attack against Michelle that made me nearly vomit when I first saw it. Thankfully, What About Our Daughters has highlighted this.

As a black woman, a feminist, a first generation American, and as a human being, I think that such imagery, with its explicit hyper-sexualization of a black woman and simultaneous exploitation of the painful history of racial terrorism against blacks in the US (not to mention the reminder of the continued dual subjugation of a black woman as a woman and as a black person juxtaposed with the gender and racial privilege of white men), is at best evidence of even the so-called-left’s poor understanding of what black women, including those who are well-educated and upstanding citizens and provide a beautiful example for ALL women, have to overcome on a daily basis.

I hope that we as feminists, united for a common cause, will continue to draw attention to such attacks on Michelle as a woman, and rally behind her with our support and our voice.

I would go on, but I have a bar exam to study for… Peace.

You’re right, Mary, I’ll send Senator Obama a message on his blackberry RIGHT AWAY.

Christ, Zuzu covered both of the “claws came out” and “moody” comments. I covered the “sweetie” situation (and got shit for it, btw). And for fuck’s sake, Obama did not flip off Hillary Clinton. He’s not a child, he was scratching his damn nose. There’s been a hell of a lot more gender-based analysis of this election on this site than there has been race-based analysis — and look, here’s some more gender-based analysis right now. What more would you like?

Don Imus was justly fired over racist comments and Barack himself wrote a letter to NBC about this. but I heard not a sound from him while the Hillary-bashing wagon was going by him in full view! Of course he was sole benefactor. But he gave a speech on Race and played hte race-bait card throughout. No one would touch him–there are laws against Racist commentary and you can lose your job.

Right, because I remember the speech that Hillary gave on racism in the election. Is there a reason that we’re not holding her to the same standard? And if racist commentary is not allowed, why do Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, Chris Matthews and Ann Coulter all still have jobs?

Back in 2005 in Bahgdad, Sen. McCain was asked about Hillary’s possible presidential ambitions and this is whtat he said: “I have no doubt Sen. Clinton would make a great president” he responded to Tim Russert. He has respect and that’s something that Obam has not shown to HRC or to women in general!

Yeah, and that time he laughed when someone called Hillary Clinton a bitch, and said that asking “how we beat the bitch?” was a good question? Shhhh. The time he called his wife a cunt in public? Uh, oops.

Also: legal thuggery???? You’re perfectly fine saying that the phrase “periodically moody” is absolutely without a doubt misogynistic, but you’re fine referring to a black politician as engaging in “legal thuggery?” Hmm.

  17. McCain is a moderate and he’ll get some HRC supporters for sure.

On what planet is McCain a moderate? He voted for torture. He has a ZERO rating from Planned Parenthood (Obama has a 100 percent rating, as does Clinton). He has explicitly said that he will appoint conservative judges like John Roberts. He votes with the Republican Party 83% of the time. He does have some vague sense that global warming is bad, but he’s not going to go against his corporate masters and actually do anything about it.

McCain is NOT a moderate by any stretch of the imagination. Please stop lying.

  18. I would just like to draw people’s attention to a particularly misogynistic and racist attack against Michelle that made me nearly vomit when I first saw it. Thankfully, What About Our Daughters has highlighted this

Holy shit! I know that just about any asshole can post anything s/he wants on DailyKos but … holy shit!

  19. Mary, I disagree with many of your comments, but what stood out to me the most was this line you used in your post –

“Isn’t it a continuation of the ’sweetie’ comment he flippantly and smugly threw at that poor female reporter?”

Say what!? Poor female reporter? What poor female reporter, where’d she go? Did she have some unfortunate accident I didn’t hear about? Please lay off the poor victim routine.

You also mention more than once the “misogynists’ frat-boy antics” employed by Obama and the media. Gee Mary, if you are serious about that comment you couldn’t go past McCain when it comes to that sort of behavior. Ask his former wife, the beauty he dumped after a disfiguring accident, and left Ross Perot to pick up the medical bills. Maybe I will leave the last word to Ross Perot himself, he seems to have the character of McCain summed up –

‘McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,’ he said.

‘After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.’ (Ross Perot)

Very classy guy eh Mary. (And your bothered by Obama tapping Michelle’s butt)

  20. Charity, it’s clear you’ve missed the huge wave of angry white women HRC supporters in the blogosphere and the making racist comments (geraldine ferraro, people at Shakesville, etc). As well as ww who angrily announced that they’re voting for an overt misogynist like McCain.

  21. As a Hillary supporter who will be voting for John McCain I can honestly say we have looked at this from the point of view of who is best qualified to lead this country. Obama does not have the experience to do so. Also I find it very hard to vote for a candidate who would vote AGAINST a bill that would allow an infant that survived an abortion gone wrong medical care. How could anyone just let a baby die like that. He voted AGAINST this bill while in the Illinois legislature. Obama also has policies that will not only raise our taxes, but he changes his views depending on who he is giving a speech to. Yes, it is true, MILLIONS of us Hillary supporters are voting for John McCain because for the time our country is in right now we need someone with experience. If you go to http://www.chicagoagainstobama.com you will see what he did for Chicago, and it was NOTHING. I hope before all of you vote you will really look at Obama’s record because the future of our children depends on it.
