Friday Random Ten – the Juris Doctor edition

jill
I took off the stupid hat and the hood. More cheesing for the camera here.

Yeah, I finally graduated from law school. Yeehaw. Now it’s bedtime since I have Bar class tomorrow,* and then hanging out with Moms all day.** But since it is certainly Friday somewhere, here is an FRT:

1. Tom Waits – Heartattack and Vine
2. The Bad Plus – Layin’ A Strip For The Higher-Self State Line
3. Cat Stevens – Father and Son
4. Les Savy Fav – Knowing How the World Works
5. The Kinks – Do You Remember Walter
6. Bonny Billy – A Dream Of The Sea (The Renderers)
7. Guided by Voices – The Best Of Jill Hives
8. Benjy Ferree – The Desert
9. The Mountain Goats – Palmcorder Yajna
10. Voxtrot – Ghost

*It started the day after graduation. Can you believe that?
**She already cleaned my entire apartment, and tomorrow she is bleaching my bathroom and making me dinner(!). Moms are the best.

  1. *Yeah bar classes suck like that. Could be worse, you could have my schedule (i.e. on quarters instead of semesters, have finals end next week with bar classes starting this week, and graduation two weeks after finals…)

  2. My warmest congratulations to you! Too bad they don’t give you some time to recover before you take the Bar. Well, I’m sure you’ll do well!

  3. Good show!

    01 “Radio Galaxies” – Iran
    02 “Blues With B.B.” – B.B. King
03 “Not Right” – The Stooges
    04 “Untitled” – Pinetop Seven
05 “The Architect Has a Gun” – Chin Up Chin Up
06 “Corpus Christi Carol” – Jeff Buckley
07 “The Black Crow” – Songs: Ohia
    08 “Cyborg” – M83
09 “Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord” – Carlos Santana & John McLaughlin
10 “Listening To Otis Redding At Home During Christmas” – Okkervil River

    Gah! That’s terrible!

But you look great and it must be such a relief to be done with law school. Congratulations on the JD! Next stop: World domination.

  5. Yay, congratulations! Hope you find some time to relax and celebrate despite starting Bar classes!

  6. Congratulations JF, JD! I have a bunch of friends who are stuck in BarBri all summer. I am giving them all “bring me treats while I study like a test-preparation machine” coupons and shall prepare some for you as well.

  7. I’ll never forget my bar exam, it was 102 degrees outside and like -19 indoors. Just submit cheerfully to the bar prep brainwashing and it’ll all be over in a few months.

    1. Word on a Wing by David Bowie / 2. Julie’s Been Working for the Drug Squad by The Clash / 3. Snake by Radio Birdman / 4. Bad Boys Gets Spanked by The Pretenders / 5. Lyric Fathom by Blackalicious / 6. Way Down Now by World Party (my favorite song of 1990) / 7. Bam Bam by Toots & the Maytals / 8. Cool for Cats by Squeeze / 9. White Car by Yes / 10. Strange Pursuits by Devo

  8. Congratulations Jill!

Seems like it went by so quickly (I know, I know, not to you!).

  9. Congratulations!

And remember…you’ll spend the next three months stressed and crazy…FOR NO REASON. You’ll pass. No question.

  10. CONGRATS! I know I’ll be feeling just as accomplished when/if I graduate from a PhD program. Maybe when I get my MA? Doubtful though. Either way – law school, oh man, I could never do it. It takes some crazy devotion to get through 3 years of that mess. Good luck on the bar, I know NY’s is wicked hard. I think part of my motivation for not pursuing law school was because I didn’t want to deal with the CA bar exam. Can you blame me?

My mom just makes fun of my house when she comes over. Having 4 animals in my house does not inspire her to clean it for me, unfortunately. She’s also a terrible cook, so I guess I’ll have to take the victories where I can. She’s a Harley riding globe trotter, and I love her for it.

  11. Congratulations, Jill!
I suppose graduation with Bar Review classes starting the next day is an exercise in delayed gratification… but I hope the thrill of graduating and all that you have already accomplished gives you tingles!
    Best wishes!

  12. Hooray! Congratulations!

And if you can maintain this blog & make it through law school at the same time, the bar exam should be a breeze!

  13. Congratulations! Good luck on the bar! Yay! I’ve been out of law school for two years now, and it feels great to be a real lawyer!

  14. Congratulations, Jill! I am a new reader to this blog and I appreciate all of the work you put into it. And now I hear you’re going to be a lawyer!? S-weet. The world needs more feminist lawyers! Go out there and kick some ass 🙂

And I’m looking through your flickr now. All I gotta say about that is: va va voom!

  15. Just forget everything you learned about the law in law school, and do exactly what they tell you to in BarBri (or whatever review course you’re taking), with the caveat that the sheer quantity of studying and practicing they tell you to do is simply impossible.

If you do at least half of the quantity they tell you to, you’ll do fine on the bar. Also, if you are already good at multiple choice exams, it is not an unreasonable strategy to focus most of your effort on nailing the multi-state. And the best way to do that is to do as many practice questions as humanly possible.
