Woman-Beating for Jesus

Ridiculous.

A player for the Pittsburgh Steelers assaulted his girlfriend, but was allowed back on the team because he had a good reason for hitting her: Jesus.

In Harrison’s case, Rooney [team chairperson] said the player was trying to take his son to be baptized.

“What Jimmy Harrison was doing and how the incident occurred, what he was trying to do was really well worth it,” Rooney said of Harrison’s initial intent with his son. “He was doing something that was good, wanted to take his son to get baptized where he lived and things like that. She said she didn’t want to do it.”

You can email the Steelers or call their offices at (412) 432-7800. Tell them that violence against women is not ok under any circumstances.

  1. Well, Jesus did say that unless you hate your father and mother, your family and descendents, your own life, you can’t be his disciple. Sadly, this asshole has probably instilled at least one of these hatreds in his son.

  2. He’s also asserting that his religious beliefs and values are worth more than his wife’s.

  3. I wonder if it’s occurred to this guy that violence is not compatible with Christian teaching?

And if he’s such a good Christian, how come he’s not married to the mother of his son?

  4. I wonder if it’s occurred to this guy that violence is not compatible with Christian teaching?

It isn’t? Which Bible are you referring to?

  5. My eyes went wide as saucers when I got to Rooney’s quote. So it’s less of a problem if you beat your girlfriend because she’s standing between you and a religious ceremony you want your kid to participate in? Unfuckingbelievable.

  6. It isn’t? Which Bible are you referring to?

The one where Jesus says things like “Do not resist evil” and “Turn the other cheek.” And where he submits willingly to martyrdom. That Bible, which appears to have gone out of style lately.

  7. Well, given that God himself smites down entire cities ad little babes for minor infractions of others I think those couple of verses are easily overruled.

  8. …I think those couple of verses are easily overruled.

But they’re from the New Testament, which overrides the Old Testament. Or something. (Sunday School let out for me about 38 years ago.)

  9. Violence for religion? Suffering for God? This -is- news breaking!

Wild that people aren’t jumping on it more. Oh, that’s right, he’s Christian. Make that guy a Muslim and it would be on Fox all night long.

Why am I not surprised that farhat has never read the New Testament?

  11. Why am I not surprised that farhat has never read the New Testament?

Well, I have. Its nice and all but when it comes to punishments for various stuff, like adultery, or rape, or homosexuality, most Christians look at the old testament.

And the people who proclaim US is a Christian nation are all about turning the other cheek? Why don’t we look at how people behave rather than how you would like them to behave.

  13. And the people who proclaim US is a Christian nation are all about turning the other cheek?

Of course not, which is my point. As an atheist, I couldn’t care less about Bible verse interpretations. But it really annoys me when people use Christianity, which is rooted in pacifism, as an excuse/justification for violence in any form, be it slapping your babymama or starting a war.

  14. Jesus would not condone his behavior. Blessed are the peace makers. Love each other, as I have love you (sacrificially). Is this couple married? Are they both believers? Important things to check off first before bringing a child into the situation. And if the answer is no to both, then he isn’t a follower of Jesus.
