No easy listening Buddhist chant showed up this time.
Instead, I’d like to throw a mental brick at the front door of a Parisian hip place called “Buddha Bar”. I’ll never forget the insulting way they denied me and my friends entrance for no reason whatsoever, a few years ago (‘where do you think you are, anyway ?’ said the door ‘filterer’). I’m guessing it had something to do with the fact that my Balkano-Mediterranean self was with four visibly non-White persons (Chinese, Black and Eurasian). I never ever go to bars, but that evening, I’d decided to make an exception for my companions’ pleasure (they were curious about a place that uses Buddhist imagery to sell alcohol and sensual atmosphere).
We successfully dominated our most immediate impulses and went to an Afro-Caribbean music café where we finally had some real good time.
As a fun fact, the Buddha Bar happens to release regularly (every year or so) its own lounge music album (based on their resident DJs sets), which contains ‘world music’ and other ‘exotic’, ‘ethnic’, ‘inclusive’ stuff.
