Why I *heart* NY

giants-helmet.jpg

Because you don’t even have to watch major sports games to know who wins — you can just sit in your apartment and you hear everyone either screaming and honking or groaning and booing as soon as it’s over.

I take it the Giants won tonight?

UPDATE 5 minutes later: This whole yelling/honking/ringing a cowbell thing could get old.

I once asked my German room mate what he thought of Americans. He considered it for a minute before responding, “You guys yell ‘Woo!‘ a lot.” That would appear to be accurate.

  1. Yep, my experience in Brooklyn, and results guess, too. I guess I could check the news sites and confirm, but I know someone will tell me tomorrow anyway, and that’s all I need to know.

  2. Now I’m getting an impromptu fireworks display…

What a coincidence. Fireworks are going off right next to the living room window!

  3. When I lived in New York a few years back, I was astounded that people would wish each other “Happy Super Bowl”. There’s no way Australians would wish each other “Happy XXX Sporting Event” – not even for the Melbourne Cup or the Test Cricket. And Americans who visit Australia should never, ever, ever say you “Root for xxxx team”. It does not mean the same thing here. And yeah, “Woo!”.

  4. Even though my team wasn’t playing, I got a lot of fun out of heckling the pats fans. It’s sort of a shame I had to wait eighteen games for the pats to lose, though . . . but wow, was there some awesome in tonight’s game.

  5. I didn’t even know who was playing until I heard people yelling about it after it was over.

Hell, they’re still yelling, and it’s quiet hours. Not that noise after quiet hours is at all unusual on my floor. Sigh.

  6. My joy tonight came not from the New JERSEY Giants win, but rather the Patriots loss. Belichick’s surly post-game interview was just icing.

  7. The “Woo!” thing reminds me of a friend of mine who lived in Russia for a couple of years–his Russian friends’ imitations of Americans consisted of simply bellowing “Fuuuuck!” over and over.

  8. My kids watched the Puppy Bowl, too.

I’m a 3rd generation Giants/Yankees fan as well as native Mainer- it’s hard whenever NY beats Boston. A great defensive game (arguably one of the best SB games ever); I am thrilled but stunned that they pulled this off! 17 years since last Giants SB win…

  9. I live in Boston, right near one of the colleges. Students woke me up every night during the World Series. Fortunately, I slept through any of the ruckus that may have gone on last night. I’m from NY originally, so I’m glad the Giants won. 🙂

  10. Jill, you’re going to have to come down south for a Georgia football game sometime. Imagine every yelling, screaming Giants fan in Manhattan packed into a campus about 1/24th the size of Manhattan and you’ve pretty much got it. And the whole thing smells like fried chicken and Jack Daniels.

But back on topic, thank you, Jints, for saving us from the spectacle of the media fellating Tom Brady and the Patriots for the next 12 months.
