Good gravy, I’m turning into Mrs. Roper February 1, 2008 zuzu I just bought a caftan. And I *love* it. I’m not sorry.
I have a big turquoise muumuu that I wear with a pair of white and gold cork-soled thongs, and I’m not sorry either.
I have a couple caftans from J Peterman, and they could not make me feel LESS like Mrs Roper. I feel like a Raja or empress in them.
Never be ashamed of a caftan, they are remarkably comfortable and if you avoid the flowery prints, they are gorgeous.
There’s a reason those things (and their close relatives) have been worn for centuries in many, many places — they are damned comfy! Sadly, I think even the big, loud, floral prints can be great if the big, loud, floral print is, um…pretty. *weak grin* (OK, I’ll admit it — I’ve done costuming for far too many Middle Eastern Dance shows, and loud and floral is a part of the look. I think there isn’t a print out there that isn’t loved by some fantastic Egyptian woman.) Anyway, I seem to recall that Mrs. Roper was pretty cool, and almost hip. So, not really an awful comparison anyway. 🙂
That’s where I got mine, Weeze. I got the sage-green one. And I’ve really only worn it outside while walking the dog. But when the weather gets better, I may wear it around with some sandals.
I have a couple Nigerian dresses that are similar to caftans. I wear the casual one all summer around the house, and I LOVE how cool and comfortable it is. The more formal one is for Nigerian parties/events. People from warm climate sure know how to dress.
