Revenge of the Blogger Nerds

A video about blogger nerds, featuring yours truly:

You know how some would-be TV journalists have a “face for radio”? I have a voice for blogging. Please be kind and ignore my squeaky high-pitched sound and the weird cadence in the way I speak (I swear I don’t talk like that in real life; I think I was nervous in front of the camera). I’m also squinty because they placed me directly in front of a sun-filled window. /self-criticism.

The video features some of my very favorite bloggers, so check it out.

  1. I have a voice for blogging. Please be kind and ignore my squeaky high-pitched sound and the weird cadence in the way I speak

I honestly have no idea what you’re talking about. Really and truly, you sound just fine.

  2. Eh, you sound perfectly normal. You should get that hair out of your face, tho, if yer gonna be on camera. Stop the self-criticism!

  3. Well, about the only thing I would agree with there is the squinty part, but it’s pretty obvious you’re looking directly into the sunlight. Nice job!

  4. Did any impromptu D & D games break out? If so, who were the Dungeonmasters? Were they selected by traffic ranking? Were many vodka-n-fruitopias consumed?

  5. I think you look and sound very professional! And you remind me of a brunette Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars).

  6. Ah, I know, the hair in the eyes is so bad!! It’s an ongoing problem, and I guess I didn’t notice it since I was already blinded by the sun. Note to self for next time: Bring a bobby pin.

  7. The “odd” cadence I think you’re talking about is simply that you’re inflecting almost all of your statements like questions. It’s an extremely common female mannerism when put on the spot or nervous. The rising inflection of a question is a way to de-emphasize a statement and make it seem less definite. Though I notice that you did it less as you seemed to relax.

  8. I liked it too–it meant there was a nice sort of wink when you said you wanted the mainstream media to be better. Worked well for emphasis.

  9. Count me in with ‘you are too tough on yourself, Jill’. I thought you looked great, although they REALLY could have found a better place to film you. You were the only one with the sunlight issue, which seems a little rude/thoughtless. You weren’t squinting nearly as badly as I would have been, though. That kind of glare usually spells “instant migraine” for me.

Your voice is fine — vocal pitch tends to rise with nervousness, so next time will be better! 🙂 Actually I found Amira’s voice (Silly Bahraini Girl) to be more annoying, and I am used to listening to Arabian women sing (very high and nasal, usually).

Kudos for getting interviewed and not having it all end up in the spare electron pile! 🙂

  10. I thought you sounded great. And I noticed the hair thing, too, but it’s a cute style and probably wouldn’t have looked odd if they hadn’t stuck you right by the window.

  11. Jill, I think you came off really well – very well-spoken, intelligent, sure of yourself. Rock on!

  12. Roxie, about Veronica Mars?? Hehe it’s true!

My only criticism is that I think the interviewer may have chosen you due to your status as a “freak” in the feminist community. [Sorry, I still think that’s so funny]

  13. Well, Sarah, isn’t that the only reason anyone reads my blog or listens to anything I have to say ever?

And I love the Veronica Mars comparison — that’s such a nice thing to say! I’m quite flattered. Made my day 🙂

  14. Actually, Jill, whenever I get asked about going to Chicago to meet you and Amanda and getting to see Clinton speak, the one thing that comes to mind is the story about the neighbor boys and the dental floss.

    Damned free association!

  15. i second whomever said you sounded well-spoken.

this video- woah….really inspired me..not in the way you might think, but anyway…thanks SOO much for posting it!

I thought we said we were never to speak of that again.

  17. Jill-
Thanks for posting! And I’m sorry that the sunlight was bothering you! We thought your interview kinda looked ridiculously awesome in a way that made all the other interivews look washed out and poorly lit. Its a snooty “filmmaker” thing to put subjects in a pool of light.

Thanks again for your eloquent words and thanks to all the feministe.us readers for checking it out. I really, really appreciate it!
(from the director lady of that vid)

  18. Thanks Negin! I have a lot of fun speaking with you. And I wasn’t trying to complain about the placement — it did end up being well-lit. I’m just good at coming up with things that are wrong with me. 🙂

    Thanks again!
