I analyze the sexist in a Minette Marrin column from The Times and ponder why Santa can’t say Ho, ho, ho!, while my blogging partner in crime reviews the Disney film Enchanted from a feminist perspective.
Same problem, different day. about the book Red, a collection of essays by teenage girls. “That’s some catchy racism!” about the hideous stereotypes found in Disney movies.
I love Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday! I am discovering some great blogs through this. I’m working through some thoughts on race and racial justice and the “opportunity” of policy activism as a means for coalition-building. It, along with this earlier post, is my way of working out some thoughts in advance of my PhD qualifying exams next week, and is motivated by a) discussions within the blogosphere re: anti-black racism, racial rifts within feminism, and similar topics, and b) how these discussions map onto my own work as a white activist who spans multiple class and geographic categories and thus has a hard time feeling comfortable most places. Also, check out the thoughtful comment from another blogger (and friend who you should check out!). Of course, I am nervous about posting…I find the blogosphere to be a particularly harsh place for critique in its anonymity… And if I may, I’d also like to shamelessly promote brownfemipower’s critique of women’s studies depts. and their silo-ing and silencing of WOC voices. She writes beautifully and spot on about our interactions with one another as women and feminists and how they shape us and our feminism. Yes.
My guiding philosophy: strength through diversity, and why I so HATE that old saying;“sticks and stones…”
my latest. I haven’t really written much about my disability before, but I think it’s time for some full disclosure.
My growing irritation at law school classroom discussions of abortion and pregnancy. Earlier crankiness here and here.
In my post “Gazing into the fog” over at the Interdependent, I describe crazy Sarajevo weather, and how it is a good metaphor for the current crises in the Western Balkans
In which I discuss the foreclosure/mortgage crisis from the pov of the person losing the home rather than the “oh, poor Citibank” angle. In which I discuss the NPR interview with Naomi Wolf and Josef Joffee. In which I discuss the 16 days of action.
I respond to William Saletan’s columns on race and IQ, and then round up other people’s responses. Also, not one of my better posts, but people interested in genealogical trivia may want to know that Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saints, turns out to be my cousin (a distant cousin, but still).
GT 2007-11-16: Urban homesteading, on how city governments force poor people into the rental economy against their will, and the people-power actions that can be employed to resist this form of government-backed exploitation. GT 2007-11-25: International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence.
The holidays got me thinking about gender roles in my own family. If I cannot change them, how can I possibly change anyone else?
Quick addition, made a post yesterday that has garnered interest already. No babies please, they’re not eco-friendly, though others might be interested. 🙂
Nor promoting myself, but a book I ran across at the library entitled Word Warriors some parts essay, some poems, this is a great compilation giving voice to the oftentimes voiceless.
In spite of the fact that I am primarily a lurker here, I’m going to shamelessly self promote my brand new blog: Delve Archaeology, feminism, etc.
