My misadventures in letters to the editor. Where cc’ing the columnist whose work I was criticizing got me some interesting responses.
Check out what our pal John Petroski is up to — *hint* he’s still defending his “rape is magical and a benefit to ugly women” editorial from months ago.
This week on Red Stapler… I ponder how anecdotal evidence it takes to make someone consider making it “official.”
Lens on Katharine Wright–the not-famous sister of the Wright Brothers whose contributions to powered flight have been all but ignored by history. The second is an invitation and a plug– if you have a favorite non-profit hero, please consider creating a SquidWho Lens about her/him and submit it to my non-profit hero group. (I’ve kept the group open to all kinds of non-profit leaders, but I’d love the balance to tip back towards fabulous women and men from organizations I admire.)
From the Blog Against the MDA Telethon this Monday, my post about why disability rights are a feminist issue. Also, my response to Courtney Martin’s article about men and abortion.
What do Anne of Green Gables, Chuck Klosterman, a childhood disease and the Disney channel have in common?
Why do I think Colleen Haviland (founder and president of XSell Resources, Inc. and Ready to Hire) rocks? Because instead of kowtowing to the momsrising movement, she treats all her employees equally. Brava, Ms. Haviland!
Here is my feminist blog again! Read me! http://afeministresponsetopopculture.blogspot.com/ Also, I just took over moderation for HollaBack Chicago so if you are from the area send me your stories! http://www.hollabackchitown.blogspot.com/ Thanks!
This week I meditated over the state of female leads in video games and listed my personal top three rules for the formation of non-offensive women characters.
Keep stopping by at Circumscription. This week, the beginning of a three-part series on sex-positiveness, a completely repulsive beer commercial (on which there will be more shortly), and a post on what to do when we blame patriarchy for too much (and whether that’s even possible). There are plenty of juicy bits coming later this week, as well, including the return of Food Friday.
Here is my response to what happened when I was attacked on Pajiba, after I pointed out the obvious misogyny in the movieSuperbad: “The Advocate”, on my blog, SteveThePenguin.com. Enjoy!
I got a crappy response from Cosmo about the grey rape article and I sent another letter. They seem to take pleasure in blurring the lines.
Okay, I’ll bite. I now have up the following new posts: This blog will now feature porn, and I’ve never been any good at this. Both address ethical matters relating to funding and feminist blogs; the second one also goes into the Feministing/doggie debacle (I took Elaine Vigneault up on her offer to be considered for a $50.00 “not to Feministing” donation… we’ll see how that goes), and – bonus! – provides details on the pot growers I used to babysit for. Oh and also, there’s some stuff in there about why, exactly, I’ve been compelled to start “blegging”… site costs and my going to the upcoming “Prostitution, Sex Work, and the Commercial Sex Industry” conference in Toledo among them. (I really do need the help, y’all.)
After months of not being able to blog for various reasons, I started up again. I’m disgustingly proud of this. Because women feel things and men just do them is a discussion about women in Fantasy novels, which is the second in what’s going to be three parts about Feminism and Fandom.
Today I blogged about Madeleine McCann. Do you think her parents did it? If so, balls of steel, as my brother would say. Going all over Europe pleading for abductors to bring back their kid? I mean, damn, that is some nerve. Or are they being railroaded? I honestly don’t know, so come over and tell me, huh?
I blogged about a terrible comedian I saw who made rape jokes. Also, yay! Lots of interesting things to read. Feministe commentors rock.
I also blogged about the debate regarding the role of pro-choice partners and abortion. [link removed — z.]
HAHA, but for some reason, my comment sent you to the site of my workplace. So ignore that.. and hit this up instead.
If anyone was following the story of my cat Boris, I’m sorry to have to tell you that he died three weeks ago, but I was only able to bring myself to write about it last week. I will try to post more cheerful subjects for a while, with a possible new guest star starting Friday.
1. I’m giving away money and links to feminist bloggers and animal rights bloggers. So, let me know if you want some 🙂 2. What happens in Vegas happens everywhere. I’m tired of seeing the Sin City being blamed for all sin, especially by people who don’t live there. Yes, prostitution is a problem, let’s talk about solutions instead of blaming an entire city, a city where prostitution isn’t even legal.
Check out my take on the Brit-Brit VMA’s kerfuffle @ On Britney, Babies and Bellies. My personal blog is a mess of the insanity that is my life–Choose me for Champion.
This one actually isn’t mine but I ran across it this week, and it’s really a must read: End the Stereotyping of Public Aid Recipients
