Why should sex ed be any more complicated than “Get married, have babies”? September 5, 2007 Jill Social conservatives are seeking a court order to prevent a Maryland school from teaching sexual health education — because the curriculum talks about sexual health and recognizes that some people are gay. Oh, the controversy.
It has been well-established in most states that parents can make sure that their kids opt out of Sex Ed classes. Is that not the case in Maryland? If they do not want their kids taught those subjects they should have the option of making sure it does not happen. Everybody else’s kids can learn it.
Students can definitely opt out of sex ed in Maryland public school health classes…. I’m a Marylander, and there were kids in my health class who went to the library and did “independent projects” on something or other while we all had the sex ed unit. As a Marylander, I must say that I’m proud of the Dept of Ed for standing up to these people, and I hope they don’t back down. I’m surprised that it’s Montgomery County, too… traditionally one of the most liberal areas of the state. Though I guess you only need a few crazy homophobes/sex-phobics to start some shit like this.
Wait, I thought social conservatives disliked unelected judges who legislate from the bench? … As usual, it seems the answer is “it depends, are we talking about me and mine?”
Wait, I thought social conservatives disliked unelected judges who legislate from the bench? β¦ As usual, it seems the answer is βit depends, are we talking about me and mine? No. They disapprove of unelected judges legislating from the bench and imposing their agendas on right-thinking, God-fearing people. They support validly appointed judges stepping in to stop people from doing things that no right-thinking, God-fearing people would want, and to require things that all right-thinking, God-fearing people demand. Why is that so hard to understand? Damn. I almost made it through that with a straight face.
They mentioned it was a small opposition group. It must be– I grew up in the Montgomery County School District, and our school was about as liberal as you can possibly imagine. We had an (awesome and very popular) Peace Studies elective taught by Colman McCarthy, and our Health teacher was straightforward, blunt, comprehensive, and extremely liberal-minded (not to mention the teacher sponsoring our school’s GSA and being an openly and happily partnered lesbian woman herself.) That’s got to be at least a little representative.
