Friday is List Day…

Months and months ago, I noticed the friday random ten from here or Pandagon (I forget where I noticed it first). I thought it was a fun idea, so I adopted it and added other random lists to create Friday List Day at 79 Soul. I figured I’d share here, too.

  2. Hmmm….Last six video games?

    1. Rainbow Six Vegas (360)
    2. Phoenix Wright (DS) – Ace Attorney (yes I know it’s lame for an attorney to play attorneyesque video games…I embrace my inherent lameness.)
    3. Zelda (Wii)
    4. Phoenix Wright (the second one) (DS)
    5. Oblivion (360)
    6. Crackdown (360)

    10. Bluebird- “Lightning”

  4. You might be right, norbiz- I was listening to Gary Gilmore’s Eyes on my way to work this morning.

That being said: Don’t hate on the Dreamcast! I lurv my Dreamcast! There were so many great games for that lovely white box. Terrible controller design and poor support were big problems, but, seriously- Power Stone 1 and 2? Aweomse! Chu Chu Rocket? Toy Commander? Worms? Crazy Taxi? Soul Calibur? Awesome x Great!

I don’t think it’s lame to play Ace Wright just because you’re a legal Ace yourself. Then again, I haven’t invested in a DS yet, so I’m probably just a little jealous that you can play it at all. How was Crackdown, though? I’d been thinking about giving it a try, but I’d heard vague comparisons to GTA, which is enough to give me pause. I don’t want to invest in something that I’m not going to play because of the squick factor.

  5. The Last Six Movies I watched on DVD

    1. Ringu
    2. Grizzly Man
    3. The number 23
    4. The Ring II
    5. Coffee and Cigarettes
    6. Five Obstructions

  6. How was Crackdown, though?

Crackdown was at the same time fun and sucky. I had a great deal of fun scaling tall buildings and blowing things up with a grenade launcher. But story-wise…there is no story. You just run around killing bad guys and trying not to run over pedestrians. AND worst of all…you know how you do all that work to build up your guy (no women so far, Irking!) so that you can play on the super hard level with a leveled up guy and have even more fun? Nope. You have to start with a new character for each new game. What fun is it to build up a character if I can’t use it to whomp things?!? I think they might have added online play, but I was playing it before the updates.

As for the squick factor, it’s not even close to being like GTA. Its like GTA in that there is an open world, but not in the way women are portrayed.

  7. Last 6 Video Games:

Roy, I’m eternally jealous that you have a Dreamcast. I had one when I lived in the UK but for obvious reasons couldn’t bring it with me. Sigh. I loved that thing.

    2) Marvel Ultimate Alliance
    3) Crackdown
    4) Earth Defense Force
    5) Medieval 2: Total War (I play this game almost with nearly the exclusive goal of fucking with the Papal States. As the Andalusian Moors, I sacked Rome after invading southern France. As the Danes, I packed the College of Cardinals and elected the first female Pope.)
    6) Peggle

As for the squick factor, itโ€™s not even close to being like GTA. Its like GTA in that there is an open world, but not in the way women are portrayed.

Yeah, but it’s portrayal of, say, Mexicans is not so great. “We are Mexicans. We love fast cars, hookers, and huge mustaches,” is more or less a summary.

    2) Tropico
    3) Diablo II
    4) Counter-Strike: Source
    5) Port Royale

  19. Kristen,
Puzzle Quest is surprisingly fun and addictive, yeah. I mean, the story is pretty unoriginal and the interface is a little fussy sometimes, but the basic idea (“you’re playing bejeweled… with special moves… for a reason!”) is pretty rock-solid. It’s way too easy to whip out and play a few rounds on the bus or train or in any spare moment, really.

  20. Oh, I do love Counter-Strike. I haven’t touched that in a long time. Have you checked out Soldat, Anatolia? It’s essentially Counter-Strike or some other fast paced online FPS, shifted to a 2D plane. It uses the same basic controls, has similar weapons, but… it’s all side-scrolly.

    Also: Free.

It’s also got a ridiculous amount of physics running in it for a 2d game.

Very weird, but fun and pretty unusual these days.

  21. I haven’t tried Soldat, Roy, but I’ll look it up. Thanks for the recommendation. I mostly love the surf maps in CS:S. I find myself going back to the same old tried and true games. I’d play Master of Orion II all weekend, if I could find the discs.

  22. Ooooh, Master of Orion II.

    Yeah. I still play that.

Oh, and X-Com UFO Defense. I looove that one. I play the bajebus out of it. I don’t even want to beat the game anymore. I want to see how long I can survive. I just keep getting more troops, outfitting them, and attacking UFOs. Head to Mars? What?

    Pshaw.

  23. FRT:

    1. Faith No More – Malpractice
    2. Static-X – Push it
    3. Akira Yamaoka – Silent Hill (Otherside) (Does this actually count?)

    5. Iron Maiden – Losfer Words
    6. Mr. Bungle – RetroVertigo
    7. Tenacious D – City Hall
    8. Queens of the Stone Age – Go with the flow

    2. Baldurs Gate II (PC)
    3. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Game of the Year Edition (PC)
    4. Icewind Dale II (PC)
    5. Knights of the old Republic II: The Sith Lords (XBox)

White Zombie- Children of the Grave
Alice in Chains- Bleed the Freak
    Nirvana- In Bloom
    EMF- Unbelievable
Alice in Chains- Got Me Wrong

Special Bonus Flashback for the Young Folk: cheesy video for a song I hadn’t heard in over 10 years until it popped back into my head and I decided to look it up… and found that it had been posted three days earlier. That is some freakydyne serendipidous ish.

  25. Video games!

I’d do video games, but it would just read WoW, WoW, WoW, ad nauseum. I’m Horde on Sen’jin.

  29. @Arianna —

I play Horde on Tichondrius. I wonder how many WoW players on this site play Horde as opposed to Alliance?
