Giuliani: Worse than George Bush?

Matt Taibbi does not like Rudy Giuliani. And since I don’t either, I’ll reproduce this gem from his Rolling Stone article:

Rudy Giuliani is a true American hero, and we know this because he does all the things we expect of heroes these days — like make $16 million a year, and lobby for Hugo Chávez and Rupert Murdoch, and promote wars without ever having served in the military, and hire a lawyer to call his second wife a “stuck pig,” and organize absurd, grandstanding pogroms against minor foreign artists, and generally drift through life being a shameless opportunist with an outsize ego who doesn’t even bother to conceal the fact that he’s had a hard-on for the presidency since he was in diapers. In the media age, we can’t have a hero humble enough to actually be one; what is needed is a tireless scoundrel, a cad willing to pose all day long for photos, who’ll accept $100,000 to talk about heroism for an hour, who has the balls to take a $2.7 million advance to write a book about himself called Leadership. That’s Rudy Giuliani. Our hero. And a perfect choice to uphold the legacy of George W. Bush.

Burn.

The article is a pretty good take-down of Mr. Giuliani. For a longer and more thorough expose, I highly recommend Rudy! by Wayne Barrett. And, since I know Zuzu is even more of a Rudy-hater than I am, I’m especially curious to hear her take.

  6. If we did have a President Rudy, I’d be waiting every day for when he has an affair with a staffer and tries to get the First Lady thrown out of the White House so he can put his mistress in her suite.

    And yet the press would still act like what Clinton did was far, far more scandalous.

  7. Rudy is a petty tyrant who can’t deal with dissent or criticism. He had city lawyers sue New York magazine over a bus ad that said the magazine was “possibly the only good thing in New York Rudy hasn’t taken credit for.”

    And he lost. Just like he lost a hell of a lot of other cases, including over discriminatory denials of parade permits, the Brooklyn Museum fiasco, etc., etc., etc.

    And that doesn’t even include his routine release of sealed juvenile or mental-health records of people killed by police in an attempt to smear them when their families objected to their being gunned down.

  9. Jill, was it that few? It matches my recollection that he was one-for-lifetime, but I think it was out of more like 23 at-bats.

  11. Did he win even one?

    Maybe a St. Patrick’s Day Parade case brought by ILGO, but that had more to do with the “religious” group running the parade than with Giuliani.

    October 1, 1999 — Since Rudolph W. Giuliani was sworn in as Mayor of the City of New York in 1994, the New York Civil Liberties Union has gone to court against his administration on 21 different occasions to protect First Amendment freedoms. The NYCLU has, so far, prevailed in full or in part on eighteen of the twenty cases, with no decision in two cases. The breakdown of the twenty-one cases are: 15 direct representation, 6 amicus curiae; 13 in federal court, 7 in state court, 1 case was in both federal and state court; 15 cases closed and 6 pending.

  14. And half the sex shops got around the zoning rules, anyhow, by diversifying their merchandise.
