Friday Random Ten

The “If I have to write one more massive paper about feminist legal issues, I might just go get a job as an accountant” edition.

Two down, and three to go. One more presentation. Then it’s time for revisions. My ass is significantly flatter from having been sitting on it for 15 hours a day writing papers. I *heart* law school.

2. Tom Waits – Baby Gonna Leave Me
3. Bonny Billy – Sweeter Than Anything
4. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Witness Song
5. Guided by Voices – Learning to Hunt
6. Hi-Tek Feat. Big D and Piakhan – No One Knows Her Name
7. Des Ark – It’s A Hard World Sometimes For Little Things
8. Refused – Liberation Frequency
9. Spoon – Everything Hits At Once
10. Groove Theory – Never Enough

Friday Bonus Videos: Shakira Shakira!

Estoy Aqui:

You have no idea how long I spent singing this song over and over until I could finally get the really fast “fotos y cuadernos” part. And I still know all the words. Thank you Senorita Louden and 11th grade Spanish.

Ojos Asi:

The dancing! The red hair with the two-inch roots! The leather pants!

I will always love her unconditionally, even if I did like her a lot better before she was Veronica Lake. (Don’t tell anyone, but I secretly like this song too).

  1. I thought I was the only one to listen to the unpopular Shakira songs just to understand the Spanish! Especially
“Estoy Aqui”. I think I sang some of the songs for a year until I got all the words, not to mention phrases. Now when my friends play English version Shakira songs, I get very confused.

  2. Just saw some more lovely misogyny on CNN. SouthPark has an episode about Hillary and her name is “HilDog” in the cartoon.
I am so sick of the double standards and misogyny….even from folks on the left. So I had to make this video. Sorry it’s not really on topic but I want to share and commiserate.
    thanks.

  3. I discovered Estoy Aqui and Shakira in Tokyo. When I came back to the States, it was enthralled with some ‘nother Shakira (“underneath my skull, there’s an endless story). I wan the Tokyo Shakira back.

  5. So i punched “random” on my iTunes and got probably my favorite FRT ever, at least as far as the titles of songs go:

    Artist — “Song”

Jimi Hendrix — “The Star-Spangled Banner”
Duke Ellington & His Orchestra — “Never No Lament (AKA Don’t Get Around Much Anymore)”
Cradle of Filth — “Damned in any Language (A Plague on Words)”
Benny Goodman — “It’s Tight like That”
Metallica — “Don’t Tread on Me”
Led Zeppelin — “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”
    Meshuggah — “Autonomy Lost”
Metallica — “…And Justice for All”
Dave Matthews Band — “Digging a Ditch”
    Lamb of God — “Hourglass”

Bonus (because the song title is great): System of a Down — “This Cocaine Makes Me Feel like I’m on This Song”

I can’t tell you why I still have Hall & Oates on my playlist, and the other guys here look at me like I’m retarded when I play it. I will say that belting out the “don’t you know” part of that song is strangely satisfying.

  8. I learned estoy aqui in 11th grade Spanish too!
And I definitely have a copy of “Donde estan los ladrones” in my collection somewhere.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who likes her pre-blonde stuff better.

  9. I know ‘me too’ posts aren’t cool…. but… this IS Shakira we’re talking about… and so nice to find her here.

I also like her pre-blond stuff better. I string together all the uptempos on ‘Donde estan’ and…. oh my god!

galnoir : Yes you are cool. Thank you for the YT.

  10. The “Thank goodness this will be my last quarter as a TA” edition:

    10. “Sunglasses At Night”, Corey Hart

I can’t tell you why I still have Hall & Oates on my playlist, and the other guys here look at me like I’m retarded when I play it. I will say that belting out the “don’t you know” part of that song is strangely satisfying.

I have “Rich Girl” in my iTunes library, and I have no regrets about it at all.
