Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday March 18, 2007 zuzu Link yer posts here! Be sure to tell us what they’re about. Have at.
Counting down to when someone links to their blog in general, and Zuz has to explain how this works again..
I think I’m in Amanda’s doghouse so let’s see if I can make comments here that don’t betray utter cluelsessnes. Oh, right the self promotion: How about a gushy review of The Heidi Chronicles?
Don’t look at me, dude. http://ginmar.livejournal.com/1033998.html The Invisible Veterans; how the victimization of female soldiers by male soldiers merely reflects the culture we come from. Those ‘boys’ didn’t learn sexism in Basic: they learned it at their Daddies’ knees.
I only posted twice this week, I’ve had too much homework. Yet another example of misogyny and right wing bias in the MSM. The solution for the recent spate of blood-drained corpses in Washington.
Vienna’s debuting new public signs in an effort to break down gender stereotypes, but it may only be reinforcing others.
Sorry I’m so bad at html but I’ll try: In which the HPS answers the Question of the Day: Why does a woman with all your strong views show a collection of photographs of her self in such a degrading way? For the record, my Flickr site is not even remotely pornographic OR degrading. The imagery is the way that it is for what I think is a good reason. However, this random dude drop-in put me in such a pique that I put up a “nipple shot” (my first and probably my only) as a sort of exclamation point to my post. Suffice it to say my site will be NSFW for a few days, so if you check it out, please do it from home! I’m not going to apologize to anyone for the photo as I believe it makes perfect sense in the context of the competing arguments being presented. By the way: The responses on Feministe to the whole AutoAdmit fiasco helped me a lot with my response to him. I find the whole question of how responsible women are for the reactions men have to them interesting in both the theoretical and practical sense. Thank you thank you thank you.
Pat Robertson’s milkshake has got him in trouble. I “defend” Pat from those who want to deny his delicious nutricious milkshake from the people.
I sure hope that old standby “the personal is political” is still in effect, because I have an asshole housemate who is going to get a social justice education whether he likes it or no.
Please please please come to my blog and participate in Estrogen Month: Pop Culture Edition! I’m spotlighting one feminist pop-culture blog per day and asking readers to send me more suggestions and vote on their favorites! Also, at the end of the month I’m hosting the 12th Carnival of Feminist Science Fiction and Fantasy Fans, and am casting about for submissions!!
Notes from last weekend’s 2007 Law Students for Choice National Conference. As I’ve said elsewhere, they’re ugly because I didn’t realize I was taking notes for anyone other than myself, and because pasting from word to blogspot does funny things that are beyond the ken of mere mortals. They also only reflect the bits of the conference I attended.
I wrote a Feminism 101 post: Who Are the Patriarchs, Anyway?” with which I am rather pleased. It sparked the first flamewar, like, evar, on my LJ, too.
Ooops. Realised that the title might not be enough. I attempt to explain to some of the men in my life, why, when we blame the patriarchy, we are not blaming them, the men we know, or any individual men at all, but the systemic gender inequalities that privilege men, and how these inequalities exist deep down in our psyches, at the axiomatic level. It’s old hat to most people here, but I’m still rather pleased with it, because it, and a long conversation succeeded in reducing a great deal of the friction between me and the person who inspired it.
Crablaw Maryland Weekly had great fun taking shots at slow-moving target Jerry Falwell for his racist, segregationist early career, his homophobia and his Calvinist pecksniff attitude towards morals policing. Also, in a post about drugs and moral policing, Team Crablaw stood up for sex workers who get victimized by predators but cannot call the cops without self-incriminating. Best of all, The Crab rained down general contempt on Team Bush. The Crab did this with special joy, since he is white, male, straight, married with children, a homeowner and lawn mower owner. Which means George Bush and Karl Rove think they have his vote. Hahahahahaha! He’s thinking about a Million Crab-Dad March in Washington, with liberal dads pushing the stroller with one hand and “No Bail to the Chief” signs in the other. Have a good night, everyone….
Sorry I’m so bad at html but I’ll try: For links, just highlight the text you want to be the link, hit “link,” then paste in the URL and hit OK.
I’ve never shamelessly self-promoted my blog before, but since someone else posted about immigration, I’ll give it a go. This post is about the Malaysian government’s crackdown on ‘illegal’ immigrants and refugees. They’ve even taken to arresting refugee families with newborns as they leave the hospital or attempt to register their children according to the law.
Hello. Yesterday I did a post on the Essence of YouTube, and today I did a post on the general ennui in Canuckistan about the upcoming Québec elections. Before that, I wrote a post about the word “smarmy”. I also wrote a very bitter critique of certain goings-on in the Canadian political blogosphere, and some much belated thoughts on the Fat Warz. I do also talk about US politics sometimes, including a recent crude photoshopping of Mark Steyn, who is *sigh* admittedly a Canuckistani, but he believes he’s a Merkin. Also check out my music posts, particularly the recent Musical Friday YouTubery, and my food posts, particularly the Wonderfulosity of Cheese series.
I did a post on Monday about Oprah and “The Secret” based on an article by Peter Birkenhead in Salon that was succinct and spot-on. That one is here: Oprah . Then a few days ago I did one on the whole Pace Immorality insanity. That’s here. ‘d love to get your thoughts.
I’m curious if there is a feminist angle (of any sort) on Esurance animated spokeswoman “Erin Esurance”.
someone in one of the other threads asked for where I got the marital rape laws claim from, so I’ll link to the ancient punkass post that I have to post to twenty blogs before midnight otherwise that girl from the video will climb out of my TV and eat me (again). Also I’ve got this post up, It’s late right now and it’s probably incoherent and needs a shit load of editing because of that, but I’d like to see what other feminists think of the post I’m responding to which can be found here.
How Daughters Affect Their Legislator Fathers’ Voting on Women’s Issues Not my research, but me writing about someone else’s research.
I’ve recently written about: international women’s day — mostly responding to a post that I thought was beyond the pale on a libertarian blog. Of course, having done that I now have a some libertarians following my blog posts so I’d appreciate some more liberals adding their voices :-). gay is the new black — just a quicky echoing thoughts from others. yak shaving — finding a a small piece of common ground (poverty) between the liberal/enviro left and rightwing evangelical Christianity. My blog is about population pressure, increasing consumption, and sustainability. And we all know (don’t we?) that the quickest way to reduce population growth and bring sanity to society is to promote women’s rights.
There is a meme going around called the “Interview meme” where one goes on a blog post (with this meme) and asks to be interviewed. Questions are given in that blog, and then one answers them on one’s own blog. I was lucky enough to get questions from Thinking Girl. If you want to be interviewed, go to my blog and aks to be interviewed! Please give me a link to your blog so I can find some basis for the interview questions. Awesomeness WILL insue!
This is a two part essay comparing two views on the issue of population growth. Betsy Hartmann, coming from a particular feminist camp sees population as a distraction from the real problems involving social and economic issues, while I and other environmentalists see population as a serious problem in its own right. There’s a lot of overlap between the two points of view, but the differences are fundamental to today’s environmental debate. What do you think?
(a) Good News out of Georgia in re EC (b) Guatamalans /f/u/m/i/g/a/t/e/ “Purify” religious site after GW visits (c ) Nebraska courts call bullying for the violence it is — I can hardly wait until the harrassment apologists weigh in…
Some very good things to read here. (Trinifar’s “yak shaving” and Hedonistic’s NSFW post were particularly excellent). I think my Martha/Mary post was pretty cool last week.
At Mostly Harmless, we suggested Claire at the Weblog has the funny, continued our tasteless YouTubeocalypse that zuzu continues to tastefully ignore (hint: she started it), and began a parody of Pretty Cure. Look for an explosive announcement on March 21!
Thanks Hugo, I made it a little bit more SFW by blocking out my nipple with a text box: OBJECTIFIED AND DEGRADED. I didn’t know my photo software had that function!
R. MIldred, that post you responded to was a classic of the genre: I found a new way to blame rape victims!
In which I acknowledge and apologize for my biphobia. The comments contain discussions on identity politics, visibility and marriage.
My take on one of the follow up posts to the one R. Mildred addressed. The right to make sexual choices is not preconditioned on my accepting the criminal misconduct of others.
Hmm…I posted today about why I thing “consent” is an inadequate paradigm for when sex is “OK” and why we need to change it. I’m proposing “enthusiastic participation” as a better benchmark. Here’s the link. Changing the paradigm FYI, I’m also doing a “celebration of female desire” week so if pictures of men I find sexy and general discussions about why I think reminding people that women look too are a good thing are going to annoy you then you might want to avoid the rest of the blog at the moment.
